Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199

Both are epic Space opera anime with a a strong cast of likeable heroes.  

Both shows revolve around groups exploring space with somewhat political side plots. Both shows also have a very strong "found family" trope. 

Both are space opera anime by XEBEC about humanity resisting a larger empire, featuring grand/ancient civilisations, immense weapons/powers, and focusing on one spaceship. In Heroic Age, the imperialist Tribe of Silver are at war with a younger civilization, humans (the Tribe of Iron). They have conquered Earth and compete with the Tribe of Iron to be successors of the ancient Tribe of Gold. The anime focuses on the spaceship Argo (equipped with a large cannon) and humanity's saviour Age, who is able to transform into a powerful giant called Belcross. In Space Battleship Yamato 2199, the Gamilan Empire have bombed Earth, pushing humans to the brink of extinction. The ancient civilization of Iscandar has offered a way for humans to restore their planet but they must get it themselves. Remakes of space opera classics. Space Battleship Yamato is credited as being the first space opera anime (1974-5). Toward the Terra's manga began only a few years after Yamato (1976-80). Before the TV remake of Terra in 2007, there had only been a rushed movie adaptation in 1980. The space opera genre and the fact they're both remakes of classics links them, obviously, but they also share a key plot point: the planet Earth. In both series the planet has become a barren, uninhabitable wasteland. Where as humans are forced to live underground in Yamato, humanity in Terra live in space; far away from Earth in order to aid the planet's rejuvenation. Yamato starts by beginning a desperate quest to travel 100's of light-years and back within a year to save the planet from DOOM, while in Terra psychic outcasts attempt to travel back to their home planet just for somewhere to call home. A key difference between them is why their respective space wars are being fought. Yamato's war involves an alien race thinking of themselves as something akin to ancient Rome attempting to conquer the universe; Earth standing against them. Terra's plot deals with evolved humans (mutants; X-MEN!) that find themselves forced to fight a desperate war for survival against the rest of humanity, as well as the A.I. that controls them. There is a link in terms of middle-of-series 'shall we fight for the Earth or abandon it for another planet?' sub-plots, though. As far as I'm aware, Yamato is more akin to a remastering than an outright remake: the opening, for example, being identical to the original. Since there never was a full Terra TV anime in the past, Terra went in a more of an 'expanded manga' direction. But, regardless, there is a very similar 'old school' vibe given by both series. There's no pandering or any attempt to please the otaku of today. Character-driven (slightly bland due to lack of 'playing up' to appeal), episodic with pit-stops on various planets and absorbing. There's ultimately something missing from both, in my opinion, but they're special enough to warrant a modern glance into the past. read more 

A single ship battling a whole empire, a lot of great strategic space opera action... 

They are both in space. That is all you need to know. 

In both series, "machines" containing human souls appear, which can lead to philosophical debates. The enemies (Angels and Gamilians) adapt and use different strategies to annihilate humans, as they face them. The characters question "the nature" of their respective wars, for not having enough information. - Similar episode: In both shows there is an enemy that uses a psychological attack to defeat humans from inside their minds, resulting in a certainly surreal episode. 

Remakes of classics and made by same creator, Leiji Matsumoto. One ship sails across universe fight entire fleet of enemies army in order to find salvation and save motherearth. Main character is new recruits that given trust by the charismatic captain. Shows many fascinating space battle which followed by good animation and background music. Capt. Harlock is fully made by top-rated CGI while Yamato 2199's CGI is nicely blended with 2D animation. 

The setting for both the anime is completey different, one is in a game world while the other in space. now here is where they are similar, they both have a strategist Shiroe and okita. They both have crews or guilds in log horizon that work together. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 has more romance, action and a strong plot. Both are a must watch 

If you love koko hekmatyar then u will love Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and vice versa. There is more romance in Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and a strong plot and developed characters relations just as in jormungand  

Both are amazing space opera and I enjoy listening to the Yamato opening every time. You'd be really surprised how similar both are. 

While it's pretty clear that Arpeggio was deeply inspired by the original Yamato in terms of technology, action, and ship design, the differences extend further than that. They both tell the story of a young hotshot commanding one small ship against a whole hostile universe to bring peace to their dying world. They both use the plot device of weapons of mass destruction in order to bring peace, exploring the morality behind using such devices and the terrible consequences that they can cause. In addition, their use of careful planning and thinking ahead is key to their survival against a bigger and more powerful foe.  

Both series are remakes of their original series, and they are some of the best modern space operas you can find around in anime. With excellent animation & CG, great choice of music, and great world-building for you to be invested in, these series can definitely satisfy your sci-fi & space cravings. 

When i was watching AZ, it reminded me for Yamato. Both animes have space battles and compicated relations between the characters. You can see in both animes battles for power and the intension to bring peace. I think that if you liked 1 of them, you should check the other one too. 

Both are high-budget OVAs belonging to iconic anime sci-fi franchises. The main plot focus of both series is relatively simple and essentially the same : embarking on a journey through space on a quest to retrieve a mysterious item said to have the potential to alter the fate of humanity. One difference is that the divide between "good and evil" in Gundam Unicorn is much blurrier and less apparent compared to Yamato, never really portraying any one faction as good or evil, although Yamato does feature some villains one can genuinely sympathize with. Both OVAs have stellar animation quality and amazing soundtracks (especially in Gundam Unicorn's case) and have a similar retro vibe and "epic" cinematic feel to them. I consider both shows to be some of the best shows sci-fi anime has to offer and are highly recommendable. read more 

Both stories are focused on lone ships and their crews trying to accomplish seemingly impossible goals in a world torn by war and with enemies chasing them across the universe. With background romance and politics, huge war and long space travels, both series feel very similar.

Zipang and Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 are military series centered on the experiences of a battleship and its crew as they are plunged into war. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 is a space opera set in 2199 and Zipang is a historical fiction set in 1942, but both series explore similar themes such as morality, duty, and courage. It should be noted that some viewers might be uncomfortable or disappointed that the Mirai crew (Zipang) do not consider that their actions may directly support a government responsible for Japanese war crimes during the Second World War. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 does not have this problem as the main characters are against the instigators of the war. That being said, you should still look into this recommendation if you are interested in stories about soldiers and naval warfare.  read more 

From the same original creator, the famed Leiji Matsumoto brings his characters to life with his many Space Operas, like Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999, which both share rich dramas in space, attractive character designs (even better with the remake of Space Battleship Yamato 2199 over it's original adaption), and laser guns that go pew pew. I highly recommend anything Leiji Matsumoto has worked on, and Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a good place to start, while his older classic works can be enjoyed later, sort of like enjoying the original Gundam series after, if you've only watched the latest incarnation prior. 

Space Battleship Yamato and Macross are two very well known space opera franchises that have had lasting cultural impact in Japan. These latest iterations brings their stories to a modern audience. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a remake of the original series. Macross Delta is nominally a sequel, but it features a new cast and viewers do not need to be familiar with the earlier series. Interplanetary warfare, politics, and camaraderie are important themes in these series. If you loved these themes then you do not want to skip this recommendation. 

Gundam and Space Battleship Yamato are two iconic space opera franchises that have a dedicated fanbase. Gundam is often considered an intimidating franchise to start, but Gundam 00 is a separate timeline meant to reach new fans. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a remake of the original series from the 1970s meant for a modern audience. Celestial Being (Gundam 00) and the Yamato's crew are pursuing their missions in the name of peace, but must use force to accomplish it. This philosophical contradiction makes for interesting tensions and conflicts between characters. Warfare, politics, and hard science fiction are central to these series. Gunbuster and Space Battleship Yamato 2199 share the same classic science fiction themes of space travel and interplanetary warfare. Humanity has come into conflict with a technologically advance alien race and its survival depends on the success of a risky mission. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is an excellent space opera that deserves greater recognition. Gunbuster is undoubtedly a classic anime title that inspired countless Gainax and Studio Trigger titles due to its over-the-top style, but does not have the widespread recognition that it deserves from modern anime fans. You don't want to miss out on these gems.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and Crest of the Stars are considered to be among the best space opera franchises. Their stories depict the conflict between mankind and an expansionist, alien galactic empire. Military space engagement, politics, and comradeship are significant aspects of their stories. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 has a greater emphasis on space battles and broader cast of main characters for its story. Crest of the Stars has a more personal storyline focused on two main characters and their role of the conflict. It is also interesting that Crest of the Stars takes the point of view of the expansionist, alien galactic empire.  

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a stunningly beautiful remake of a classic sci-fi anime from the 70s, we see the beloved crew of the Yamato and the dramatic ship-to-ship battles in modern animation. It adds new details too for more world building such as a more expansive history of the characters from the original, new crew members not seen in the original and more alien races in the Iscandar arc than just the Gamilas and others. While the manga of Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin is a remake of a classic sci-fi anime from the 70s, as of now, the OVA adapts the several-volume-spanning flash-back arc so it isn't technically a remake. However we do see some of the interesting characters from the original Mobile Suit Gundam in modern animation such as Char, the Zabis etc. We see side-characters and characters that were only mentioned in dialogue or appear in flashbacks in the 1979 series get a more sound and detailed story to them. The OVA expands on the details about the Earth Sphere we all watched in the original Mobile Suit Gundam. When I saw the space battles between Federation ships and Zeon ships in this OVA they really reminded me of the space battles in Space Battleship Yamato 2199. To summarize; both of these anime are remakes and or expansions of classic sci-fi anime from the 70s with a lot of world building and exciting battles. read more 

Years after the major Hype for Yamato, rivaling Star Wars, Robotech/Macross eventually came into being. They both sport fighters, a huge honking gun (Reflex cannon, but the Wave Motion gun was the FIRST BFG!), and large space battles. They also have aliens assisting humans to get to space, Yamato was with a aliens still alive giving blue prints and equipment on a crashed ship. Robotech/Macross was with a crashed ship reversed engineered. They have a theme of culture differences between Gamilions way of thinking, and the Zentradi's war culture in Robotech/Macross. There is a entry level pilot who works his way up, be it Rich Hunter or Derek Wildstar (insert original name in Japan if it helps). They both have over arching stories where earth is destroyed and then recovers when calmer minds take hold and control. They both have incidents with the enemy crossing the line and they both learn the enemy is not JUST a faceless monster... read more 

Space opera is a genre with a small, but devoted fanbase. There are very few recognizable space opera anime. Gundam Wing may now be considered an old anime, but it was a popular entry point into the Gundam franchise and an excellent example of space opera anime. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 is a more recent space opera anime, but did not gain the same level of popularity outside of Japan. However, it is easily one of the best space opera anime in the last 15 years, which speaks more to the lack of new space opera anime. You will undoubtedly enjoy these series. 

Epic classic space opera. Humanity is kept repressed underground by alien attacks, which have wiped out Earth's surface. With the help of an alien technology that can harness the infinite power of the universe, with risks, a selected cast of determined and competent people, ranging from teens to elders, incorporate it to their vehicles, and reach higher horizons, fighting versus entire armies, which are not pure evil, but mostly facing a grave environmental problem by taming the universe through terror. There is some strategy involved, but the main crew is still plot-armoured, and the solution always ends up being to ram the enemy! fire the freaking Wave Motion Cannon! shout very loud and pierce the heavens with your drill! though TTGL leans much more toward rule of cool and self-awareness. The boat configurations of the mechs are totally a reference to Yamato. There is even a late trial when the crew is drowned in a cosmic ocean which absorbs their fundamental energy. read more
