Both are produced by Gonzo and have the character design of Range Murata.
Deep, beautiful, mature, and futuristic series of the adventure, action, and sci-fi genre.
Both anime have a specific setting (air in Last Exile, water in Blue Submarine # 6).
Also, in both the main girl is a redhead.

Suisei no Gargantia addpermalink

Some of the themes these two series share would result in leaving spoilers in the recommendation, so I'll stick to pointing out that both series involve an Earth that humans have effectively destroyed and the aftermath of trying to survive that post-apocalyptic world. Suisei no Gargantia takes a softer tone with the themes, but there is a possibility said series is somehow influenced by the older series.

The same plot where mankind's existence lay on the hand of submariners who are up against weird looking enemies, however one is limited to a 4 ep OVA, while the other one is a full TV anime.

Strait Jacket addpermalink

There are similar character behaviors and personalities along with a similar depressive, serious atmosphere overall. Additionally, the sci-fi-ish, science gone wrong backdrop is present. Besides the general plot being different: Strait Jacket is far more gory and Ao no 6-gou has a greater color scheme.

They're both Sci-Fi movies set post-apocalypse. 
They both have a kind of Man vs. Nature conflict.
While Blue Submarine has fish-people, Origins has plant-people.

Both OVAs deal with predators from the sea going to war with humans. While "Gyo" takes a more surreal and horror'esque approach, "Blue Sub No. 6" plays it rather straight.

Cowboy Bebop addpermalink

If you thought Blue Submarine was cool for it's use of jazz music during action sequences, you'll enjoy Bebop's fight and flight scenes. However, I cannot recommend Blue Sub to fans of Bebop, because Bebop's soundtrack is far superior and overall Blue Sub will disappoint in this department.

Darling in the FranXX addpermalink

The similarities between the 2 series are as follows:
- An apocalyptic version of earth set in the future
- Both series rely heavily on the male and female mech pilots
- Humans are fighting another species for control of the earth

If you liked Darling in the Franxx for the reasons listed above, then you will like Blue Submarine No. 6 and the mysteries that are unraveled throughout its run time.  The CG of Blue Submarine No. 6 has not aged well at all, but if you can get past that you will enjoy the series.

R.O.D: Read or Die addpermalink

Both have the villan with a god complex who believes that mass murder is the answer to problems of the world.  In R.O.D., the villan creates clones while in Blue Submarine he evolves animals to the level of humans.

Although dealing with completely different subjects, both animes have a nice mix of action and things that make you think about; both are (somehow) sci-fis. And: they are on a similair graphical level (although Blue Submarine No. 6 sometimes uses CGI in a not too skilled way). 
By the way: both animes exist as single movies and 4-part OVAs.

The idea that technology has doomed mankind's future by not respecting nature is approached in both animes.  In Arjuna, polution, a by-product of our advancements in tech, is damaging earth, hence, it is up to Juna to heal the planet. Meanwhile, in blue sub.  someone tries to protect the environment by eliminating mankind.

They show differents approaches on how to tackle the overexploration of resources, and lack of respect we have by our planet.

Anime: Kenran Butou Sai: The Mars Daybreak

Blue Sub takes place on a water covered earth while Mars Daybreak takes place on a water covered mars. Both are in the future somewhat. Both take place primarily in the oceans on submarines. Both have mecha fighting under water. Both have talking creatures that aren't human including but not limited to talking cats and dolphins. Both also leave alot in the open for the viewer to decide. The overall plot is also fairly similar. If you like one you are sure to like the other.

Look to the future and find dystopian series where one group of individuals is worried about the future, with certain individuals fighting to change their destinies despite all of the pain that goes with it, including the loss of friends and other loved ones.

Both are short series, 4-6 episodes, where a lot of the action takes place on submersible vehicles. Sand ships for Ozuma, and submarines for Blue Submarine No. 6.

Both of these are similar in the fact that both are dealing with outside and non-human lifeforms that want to destroy the human race.  In both world because of this, the oceans have risen to swallow up most of the earth.

Both deal with the philosophical question, "Do two evils make a left?"

Incase my poor sense of humour is lost on you they both look at the stance of the lesser of two evils and whether or not an evil action can be good
