Frieren is a shounen.
And it's pretty good.
(But a little bit overrated, ngl)

@AR_12_06 The manga is published in a shonen magazine, genre doesn't matter.

It's listed as shounen and is shounen, so what's there to argue about?

then it is pointless to judge an anime category just based on the publication

wdym it's pointless? that's literally how it is. it's published in a shonen magazine hence its a shonen manga. romance is a genre, and shonen is a demographic

ofc it's a shounen, with plenty of battling too, but apparently it's not considered a battle shounen for whatever reason, even though it meets many of the nekketsu characteristics.

@ColCasey Not in the classic sense, but to some degree. There are many similarities most people don't seem to recognize.

@AR_12_06 because it's a shounen romance same way frieren is a shounen fantasy, that shouldn't be hard to understand.

I think it can easily fall into a slice of life genre. It's more focused on day to day activities of the journey than anything else.

@Kaitaka12 It's because they think that watching/reading shonen reduces their elite status among the mortals or something of the kind. John Tolkien, Jules Verne, Robert Howard and Arthur Conan Doyle all wrote shonen, BTW.

It's funny how people argue about genres. Genre is just an artificial category based on certain characteristics, which not all stories necessarily fit in. Jesus, people, are you really unable to just view art as art?

Congrats for getting the award. I think it was deserved. It's a well-done anime that has received many positive opinion and that has become really popular.

I wonder what kind of mental gymnastics some folks will be doing now to say that "akshually Frieren anime is not a shounen 🤓".

It's not like shonen is a genre, it's literally defined as it it's published in a shonen magazine or not.

People can't seperate that from genres. They see thses categorisations as genres.

Ackshually, that is wrong, if you had to put them into one of these categories, it would be shonen, but the sentence "Jules Verne wrote shonen" is wrong. Instead you could say "Jules Verne wrote for shonen audiences"☝️🤓

@Suprgamr123 It is pure polemics. We have "young adult books", "children's cartoons", "pickups" etc.

Technically not correct. I just pointed that out as a joke. Now that I'm looking at it, I did forget the nerd emoji. Sorry about that. And anyway, if you're going with that, that label is supposed to only refer to manga.
