I haven't watched or played Higurashi, but Lain is very avant garde esque— that is to say it's a mind fuck, alot of things won't make much sense and the show won't even try to explain it, you really just have to feel everything and make sense out of it from all the pool of near subconscious thoughts.

nah, lain isn't really a full blown horror like Higurashi is. just kind of a psychological mind fuck.

Not at a Phisical level. But more dark at a mental level.
I'm an Anime/Manga Artist who enjoys drawing in the same style:

SEL is not dark. It's just weird and wired.

You’re kind of trying to compare apples to oranges here, the styles of both shows are completely different in ways that make it difficult to compare their relative f***ed upness. Like I couldn’t tell you whether Saw or The VVitch is scarier, because they’re scary in completely different ways. Outright gore vs creeping discomfort without any relief.

this is the craziest thread ever… i love both series so i’d say watch it, if you’re in to the psychological horror and in-death interpretability from higurashi then even better

Only if you think of existential horror as dark, but they're completely different genres. Hugurashi is more explicit and visceral, but Lain can leave you questioning whether or not your own identity is real.

there's nothing really to add that hasn't already been said however i wouldn't consider lain dark whatsoever. its an existential and surreal conceptualization of the internet. whereas higurashi is a psychological horror with gore and child torture. They're completely different shows and completely different genres that aren't very comparable imo. however both are good and i'd recommended watching them.

Higarashi is fueled by the fear of death (I think) Lain is fear of unknown or something understandable. you'll get lots more what am I looking at then oh god I didn't need to see that.

Higurashi adaptation is not a horror if you're familiar with the original, yet SEL is mush different from cicadas.

@JeTeL You mean mine? It's an ancient Red Dragon from the 4e D&D Monster Manual iirc, one of their books anyway.

No because it’s a completely different kind of “dark,” while Higurashi is just confusing (yet well done in my opinion) horror and violence, Lain is more like a humanistic psychological that dwells deep into what it means to be human in both the real world and the digital world? I think Higurashi is more of a opening to the world of horror while Lain is more for a specific type of people.

Why are you even comparing it to higurashi? Those are totally different types of dark.

If you watch don't expect it to be like higurashi at all.

It’s not visually disturbing like higurashi, it dives more into the existential themes. Still disturbing.

Higurashi isn't actually "dark" LMAOOO
The fact that you even have to ask this question is embarrasing
Higurahsi is just cheap, shock value riddled, inconsistent horror that barely disturbs on a psychological level, it barely even tries

Higurashi relies more on gore and horror. Lain mostly revolves around mental issues, solitude and lack of self image.
