How Lain appear on Taro's phone and in front of Arisu in episode 13 if protocol 7 wasn't invented. Protocol 7 only made Wired quicker(allow people to even appear in Wired

well cause lain itself was a program she was not a being that was to be existing as a human but it did so being a program or a software it gave her/it a perfect chance to move that's why only she can do that also that's why the antagonist needed her to become a more powerful being i.e. more than God ( i saw the anime way back in 22 but hope it helped)

Yeah basically what the person above said. It's been a while since I have watched the show, but I think she could do that because she was already a part of the Wired by then. The actual Lain was always the program. The human one was just created to make her a legit entity iirc.

She is a program (kind of) and her existence in the real world is only because the entire population believes she is there. concensus reality or a dmt trip if you will.

At the end of the show, Lain has become the embodied God of The Wired, whose influence is over not only technology but the collective unconscious of humanity. Protocol 7 was just a crutch for the incomplete version of Lain, and didnt need to be kept.
