Then go ahead and say the same for every anime out there. Yes, we live in a world of cliches. Once again, now you're attempting to introduce english literature to this argument, especially a piece of work back in the 1800's. I don't see how you are trying to use the term edgy to critisize a gory themed anime. If the MC is a cold blooded killer, while the story is supposedly surrounding Lucy, what do you expect? A censored version of Elfen Lied, I guess some 13 year olds do need that. Ofc I felt sympathetic towards Lucy, by retelling her back story exphasizes the other side to her, and revealing the main reason as to why she refuse to hurt Kouta. It is debatable whether that train slaughter scene was necessary or not. I believe it's all dependent on personal preference, since it seems like you despise edgy and gory scenes, where as I am barely bothered by it. If you seen EV, EL's gory scene are right around the same level.

Why doesn't Kouta remember anything when he arrived at his cousin's family's house? Well, the edgy scenes explains just that, all those edgy scenes are illustrated so we the viewers can and will be able to understand. BTW, I hope that the train scene isn't the only one you happent to recall, bcz there are heart warming scenes that are not something that resembles the act of "forcing" feelings towards us. The romance aspect was just the right amount FYI, Lucy was his only true love. Her demise after all the character development was if anything, the only true edgy part. A shock that shook me to feel remorseful.

It seems as if you are unable to grasp the idea and fact that Elfen Lied is a 2004 anime.
If I were to compare this to animes in this era, or this current year, yeah, Elfen Lied would be considered as inferior. But once again, I must remind you that I overlooked many flaws this show had. If I went back in time, and watched Elfen Lied without any memories of the future, I'd see it as jewel in the anime industry.

If you call that cliff hanger a cliche, you obviously didn't thouroughly read my response. Can't stress enough that it is most likely that anything cliche you find about Elfen Lied is really the originality of what you call cliche today. Everything has a start to it, and Elfen Lied is one of the examples. Should you like it? You don't have to, but you are being stubbron by not noticing the time difference and how much technology advanced all this time. You can't judge an old film like it was made in the current era, it is actually absurd for one to think like that.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
