this might be the best comedic, pure slice of life school life manga of all time. It's like yotsubato, but yotsuba is replaced by a bunch of goofy girls from an all-girls school. The humor also feels like curb your enthusiasm's bits mixed with louie's dialogue, but with much less complaining and much more youth. The characters feel like real, normal people who are interesting enough to have a quirk or two. Possibly the best archetype for a slice of life comedy, and boy do they carry this manga. The whole atmosphere reminds me of my school days when I actually had female friends to hang out with and we were just doing whatever. Maybe I should work as a teacher instead of this gloomy ahh office job (jk I want money)

Wayama is a GOAT in the making. 9-10/10

if I don't consider the historical context it's a pretty mid story tbh, the characters don't feel very real to me.

2025 update: I still feel the same way about the characters after reading this again and making a video about it (maybe two vids). But of course my appreciation for the story has evolved after learning about postwar Japan. The ambition and creativity to create this kinda allegory is respectable and pretty damn cool tbh. So I'm leaning towards an 8 now. 7-8/10

2025 update: Man... After thinking about it for some time. This is actually a pretty tragic conclusion to come to. The fact that Urasawa mostly failed to communicate the subversion for 200+ chapters makes me feel sad. He made it pretty obvious too in the last 2 volumes. I mean it's not like I got it the first time, I guess it's his fault 🤷

A corny office drama with some of the most heavy handed storytelling known to man. A lot of the characters are just goofy caricatures of the usual tropes. The only saving grace is the MC himself, even tho he's a little much. I do like his monologues in the first half of the story about his work. The age gap stuff isn't even that important. The girl's just there to encourage the MC, she's not very interesting. Go read smth else lmao.

A really nice otome isekai where the MC becomes the villainess' butler and saves her through 'nobility politics'. MC is a little too flawless imo, he wasn't too compelling to me. But the other characters were pretty great. The story is also pretty good with some interesting otome isekai meta twists. Sadly it was never finished, tho it didn't end on a sour note. Overall a pleasant read.

A straightforward 'beautiful fighting girl' manga that's well made and consistent (in quality). The simplicity and sincerity of the characters are great. It manages to be cute in its fairly dark setting, which made it pretty funny to me lol. These highschool girls are involved in geopolitics while also acting like kids. It's the usual unreal setting, without a facade of depth. But the story's nothing too special, soo a 6-7/10 seems right to me.

Dude who looks like a girl goes to a cipher academy to save the world by solving riddles/puzzles to become the code emperor and get 50 billion bitcoin to stop all wars. Lmao.

One of the main appeals of the manga are the puzzles, which were mostly incomprehensible because they're in Japanese or it's just too crazy. Having read Zaregoto, this was kind of a similar experience to its murder mysteries, where Cipher academy's codes was much too complicated for me. Nisioisin is peak autism and I always feel like I'm missing out on some sweet nectar. I could tell that the codes were telling us about the characters and whatnot just like in Monogatari, but it still was too much. The metaphors in this manga are hit or miss.

So why a 7? Well, reading a Nisioisin work is always a breath of fresh air because he's obsessed with some weird themes that no one else covers, and I always feel like I'm exploring an unknown land. Or maybe I like feeling dumb idk. 6-7/10

The art is 10/10 btw

romance drama with pottery as a background. For the most part it was pretty good despite some cheesy parts. But the final conflict was so contrived and annoying it kinda ruined things for me. SHE COULD'VE JUST WENT WITH HIM 😭. Like it was legit a woman moment and it got me tweaking. I guess I shouldn't be surprised cuz this is the same author as kids on the slope, which had a similar issue but not as bad. idk if I should keep following the wolf manga now

It ended well tho, and I overall enjoyed it. 6-7/10

81 Asebi to Sora Sekai no Boukensha
A great sci-fi adventure story with an impressive array of subject matter that are done well. The best part was the worldbuilding and the adventure/drama. I love the sky world lore and moral dilemmas that the story sets up. The characters and the drama were also decent. Sadly the ending was very rushed, there were a lot of unresolved storylines, and the dilemmas weren't answered sufficiently imo. Could've been a 8-9/10 with 20-30 more chapters. Overall a 7-8/10 with that ending 😢 (still worth reading tho).

This is the purest form of Koike's expression, a textless journey across many cultures and realities, showing the connectivity of it all. Basically the same as his other works but the silence and length emphasizes this feeling quite a bit. Visually, this manga might be Koike's best. The spreads here are insane. I couldn't really decipher most of it but the common symbols are enough to catch the vibe. Makes me feel like I gotta read up on some more Jung.

it's also interesting to see that this was published in Weekly Agama, which ran at the height of the new religion craze before the Aum attacks.

83 Asuka@Miraikei
A great action comedy drama about a buncha people going back to the past to prevent the end of the world by killing a girl, MC protects the girl (yes it's the plot of the terminator). The plot is quite simple, but it's done very well as the manga doesn't take itself too seriously, it's going for a more comedic feel. The drama does hit in the 2nd half, but don't expect anything too crazy. The combo of manzai humor and over the top (but tasteful) drama feels like a perfect mix between Love Roma and Devilman. The artsyle even looks like the two combined lmao. The characters are the best part for me. They are insanely charming, especially the guys (no homo). I was laughing at them the whole time haha.

Overall an amazing read. A great parody of the classical shounen/seinen dramas. Definitely not for everyone but man I loved it. 9-10/10

84 Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyuubu
the premier mindless shool life ecchi pseudo harem. Possibly the most casual one where each chapter is about a random situation, an embarassing/lucky perv moment occurs, we get an ecchi panel, and then someone blushes or smth. The characters are just chilling, as should the readers. It's supposed to be read weekly like a comic strip and that's exactly what I did for 7 YEARS across different websites lmfao. And as a weekly comic strip, it has served its purpose well. It kinda hurts to see it end because it makes me feel old. I mean, I still can't believe SYD ended already T_T

94 Believers
essential post-Aum manga that explores the human side of the violent cult. It depicts the extremism of Aum/JRA pretty nicely while adding in the primal aspect of their practices. I like how it shows the positive side of joining the cult: escaping society. It starts from admiring the ocean view, enjoying some clams, and ends with sex 24/7 lmao.

The characters/plot are pretty strong, but I couldn't completely immerse myself into the story because I was reading it with the intention to study, trying to figure out all the parallels it's making to the real cults. I think I would've enjoyed more if I went into it blind. Though I did understand the ending a little better because I read about Aum beforehand, so that's nice.

I guess the only issue is how sparse it feels sometimes. The somewhat meta ending didn't help with that lol. Overall a very good read. 7-8/10

98 Birdmen
A sci-fi drama about humanity's evolution into birdmen. It has the exact same themes as 'Eden: It's an Endless World!' but comes to a more hopeful/balanced conclusion. Birdmen ended with a soft choice to ascend as a superior species, whereas Eden ended with the choice to completely reject humanity and escape into the pleuroma. More or less the same with MUCH less blood lol. Both manga also have the problem of focusing away too much from the main cast, to the global scale in the 2nd half, which is a shame because the characters just feel wasted imo. I really like seeing Karasuma's growth as a person. Eden had a much better time with this since it's long af.

Overall a great read and (unintentionally?) companion piece to Eden. 7-8/10

107 Boku no Hero Academia
last read this in 2019, decided to finish it because of the memes and nostalgia. Up until the arc when all might loses his powers, it was a pretty good battle shounen with great worldbuilding, creative powers, and fun battles. But after that arc it got worse and worse until it just became generic battle shounen slop with the final war arc. There's too many throwaway characters, the plot's spread thin asf, and worst of all are the boring battles that don't focus on the quirks anymore (just like most jump battle manga).

It's a shame because the premise is amazing. Season 1 of the anime is peak shounen, can't believe it's been 8 years T_T

classical 2000s slice of life romcom drama VN adaptation. Does everything an old VN would do with a nice touch of hopefulness from the whole painting thing. 130 Chi. Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite
A nice story about humanity's purpose told through the struggle for heliocentrism. The themes are brought up thoroughly in long dialogue that are tied into the story itself. The characters talk A LOT about philosophical ideas in these blatant lecture-style ramblings (?). It feels more like the characters are having debates in the middle of whatever's happening in the story. But more often than not, it does feel quite natural. I'm not saying it's realistic but it does fit the manga's tone.

This does get a bit annoying in some moments, and the lack of visual presentation does not help. I don't mind the 'ugly' drawings, but some panels are just bland or even empty. It makes it feel like I'm just reading a script for a play or something.

Actually, the story is structured like a stage play. There's a bunch of characters explicitly ranting towards each other or to themselves, and the scene ends with one big moment. Idk if that's accurate but the plays I've watched are like that (I've only watched like 2 of them).

Overall a pretty nice manga. 7-8/10

A silly 2000s romcom about a guy being helped to date his crush by a goofy loli angel. Actually pretty good for like 20 or so chapters until the story lost its focus and went too hard on the gags. Like the main duo are the most archetypal BL characters and you even get the BL love triangle subplot lmao. Reminds me of the chion cat manga which is a very sensual non-ecchi, or the flying witch anime which does the same thing.

It's a cozy read tho. 7/10

well that was underwhelming... Girl gets isekai'd to a death game with a psycho brother and tries to stop him. This was genuinely a great thriller for the first half or so, but then it just stopped all the suspense for the romance? Not that the romance was bad but why throw away all the buildup?? Maybe it got axed idk. Looks beautiful tho. 6/10

interesting tragedy about a lonely, isolated teen who has a LOT of trouble communicating. Everything goes wrong in this manga due to 0 communication, which makes a lot of sense for a bunch of angsty teenagers. The core plot is pretty nice but the 'crimes' at stake feel a bit silly/petty because they weren't setup well. A lot of people felt that it was disproportionate compared to the characters' reactions and actions, me included. But the ending gave the manga some extra points for how committed it is to the premise, I like it. Oh and it also looks great. 6-7/10

An oddly interesting SoL about a girl visiting her retired art teacher. Both characters are amazing to me. Good chemistry and hilarious. The awkward love/hate dynamic between the two is oddly poignant. The way they argue feels real, even though the subjects are ridiculous. It definitely goes off the rails half the time, especially when main girl gets sexually harassed for no good reason. Not a fan of that. It mainly happens when the other characters get involved. But when it's just the main duo, it's insanely good. There's a palpable bittersweet feeling that contrasts the silliness in such a romantic way (That felt cringe to write but idk what else to say). Reminds me of my favorite TV show Louie, especially the main guy lmfao. Though, unlike Louie it doesn't really capture those deeper themes or dramatic moments, the manga just passes by like a missed opportunity. But I guess that's the point.

Way too long and unfocused. I didn't really have a chance to get attached to any of the characters, so it was a bit disheartening when the story keeps transitioning to another set of characters. 179 Dungeon Meshi
one of the best fantasy manga I've ever read. Starts off with some DND dungeon exploring adventure going deep on the ecology, monsters, and races. After reading a billion isekais with an empty fantasy world, I've forgotten how much I enjoyed some good ol worldbuilding. But it doesn't get overwhelming because the characters are always injected into the scene. It never goes full Moby Dick and spend a whole chapter talking about cetology. There's a nice transition from the lore of the dungeon to the ancient kingdom to the demons and eventually ending by zooming out back to the whole cast and world. Kinda reminds me of FMA's ending, both female authors too. Maybe that's why the ensemble ending hits hard like Kekkaishi.

The final climax itself is surprisingly profound. I wasn't expecting such a creative take on the meaning of life/desires thing that most religions cover, while still maintaining the comedic/casual tone. Most stories would completely ditch the comedy once things got real (eg: Gurenn Lagann), but Dungeon Meshi stays true to its roots really well and keeps it light. Like it never veers off the eating theme or any other theme and transforms it into something complex without making it feel forced, because it's not a crazy pretentious concept, just simple and powerful. I stopped reading the first time right before the final arc so this was a cool surprise. I LOVE the way the demon is written.

My only complaint is that it wasn't longer. I wish the story would dip back into the detailed cooking scenes during the final arc, and maybe chilchuck/senshi should've gotten more screen time, but that's not a real issue. Overall a greatt read 9/10

On the surface it's a comedy about a goofy 'loser' novelist who's surrounded by women and the main girl who's a sadist. But it's actually a pretty nuanced allegory on escapist otaku romcoms and how sad they are. Every girl the MC encounters represents a different romance manga trope. It actually feels more sobering to me than similar stories because of the comedic and silly tone. There's not a moment when the manga drops the veil so it's not exactly a grim read, but watching the MC does make me feel sad haha.

Overall a very interesting manga to think about and a light read. 7-8/10

188 Fire Punch
A weird post-apocalyptic supernatural drama about a dude who keeps burning because he can't die. Started off as an very edgy/wacky revenge story, ended up deciding the fate of the world (as always). It felt like Fujimoto squeezed in every element and theme that he could into this just to try it out. From cool supernatural powers, religion, transexuality, depravity, to using his love of movies as a big ol' metaphor. So it was a convoluted read on that front. But the most important theme is purpose, which was explored quite well by the MC's arc. He keeps getting himself in chaotic, ironic situations that exposes his self. I like how he flip-flops from true purpose and impulse, something that's also prominent in Chainsaw Man.

The second half til the ending was insane and I didn't completely understand it apart from the MC finding his purpose through love. I couldn't keep up with all the chaos while reading, but I guess that's the point. Reading this at work was a weird experience lmao. Gotta read it again later. Overall a pretty unique manga. 7-8/10

189 Fortune Arterial
A pretty good VN school romcom drama. Really feels like a relic from the 2000s, in a good way tho. The way the main 'villain' was handled was pretty neat in concept, all the motives behind everyone's actions make a lot of sense. I like the characters a lot. However, the execution was not perfect as a result of the usual VN/LN storytelling quirks. Good, but not great. I also like the cartoony art.

One of the most interesting psychological slice of life romance dramas I've ever read in my life. I absolutely love the main duo, they are some of the realest characters in fiction. Each of them have clear traits that define them (narcissism, self-centeredness, etc), and seeing them fall over and over in those flaws feels refreshing. Seeing them stuck in a cycle of understanding their shortcomings yet not being able to escape it, and finally taking a small step forward is insanely satisfying. Makes their growth (or lack of it) feel real. They remind me of real people I've met at a DEEP level. Like the main girl is literally the female version of my best friend, and it's crazy to think about how she would have a much better time being a dude having that personality type.

That aside, the dialogue in this manga is kinda weird. There's a bunch of great characterizing moments, but a HUGE part of the dialogue is insane meta-speak. They're much too self-aware in the big moments, similar to Shinji's abstract mental breakdowns in Eva where he's sort of attacking his self/identity, but without the crazy visuals or the alien mindbreak. It's as if the author is having a conversation with himself through the characters about the manga's themes: human relationships, and it does a fantastic job of it even if it's not realistic. Which is funny because the characters themselves feel real. You can tell the author is aware of this from the way law is used as a symbol. This isn't an entirely bad thing, but it did take me out of some scenes (hotel scene 💀).

Besides that, the story itself is somewhat grounded in a fucked up way. Like a morbid soap opera or a bleak josei from the 90's (basically Moyoco Anno), but it's not completely hopeless. The only real issue I have is that some parts of the story is kinda wild and abrupt. Things just happen seemingly out of nowhere. Though, it didn't completely hinder the story and it fit thematically so... 🤷 Overall a fun, heavy read. You need to be in the rght mood to read this. Definitely re-reading once I get married (hopefully) lmfao. 8-9/10

Read this for the 3rd time and realized I haven't added it lol. It's a very nice anthology for Koike fans, but idk if non-fans would enjoy it since it doesn't lean into the tripping too much compared to Ultra Heaven (hence the mal score of 6). Thematically the stories are pretty much the same as Koike's other works but more raw and underdeveloped. You can tell that some works were made early in his career. It's also nice to see elements in here that were directly used in Ultra Heaven. I could spot the Kabu and Seven prototypes, the volume 1 bar scene prototype in Lazaro Franco, etc.

I see this manga as a sort of hero's journey for gamers (lmfao), with escapist undertones running throughout.

It's a great mystery adventure with excellent worldbuilding and engaging characters. The fantasy world feels intentionally sparse, like an old game from the 2000s. The game-like elements of the story are well done and fleshed out. It makes you feel like you're watching an expert work their way through an unknown video game, similar to a lot of isekai. However, unlike isekai there is a clear purpose behind the world itself. That purpose makes the manga feel complete.

The whole theme of finding your place in the world was also pretty endearing to me. The deceivingly simple characters fit into this theme quite well. They did not pale in comparison to the fun, video game-esque adventure.
