I started to smoke when I was in depression and suffered a huge setback in life. Nowhere to go, can't see my goal in life, find school boring and gather some friends who smoke too. After awhile, I start to recognize that I don't fit the group and found that it is simply a false pretense of having friends who can share your thought and feelings. I used to smoke a lot like 10 cigarettes per day. However, recently I stop smoking because I don't see any sense of it and don't feel anything just empty. Perhaps you will feel the same.

At least marijuana smells better then cigarettes. :)

For people who are quitting or have quit, I thank you. I can't stand the smell, the smoke makes me cough and my eyes get watery when I am around it.

Your living environment thanks you as well, It can do terrible things to books, electronics and things like blankets/walls/blinds....

My uncles actually grow/sell tobacco but I still think cigarettes should be banned from public use all together.

So... you're saying that we smoke weed instead of cigarettes? "NICE"

Your claims have left me in despair!

Just saying it smells better, Not saying it's any better for you. :)

I'm not sure what the effects of Marijuana smoke are on the surrounding environment are though.

I live in an apartment though, Others in the complex smoke indoors and their once pure white blinds are dark, dark yellow. It's mostly from the nicotine, that junk dangerous.

:( Shouldn't be putting that in your body. Though, I guess a lot of things shouldn't go in your body but yea...

Has anyone tried E-Cigarettes? they are supposed to be ''healthy'' and should help with the addiction, also it has a great taste and you can smoke inside if you want too.

Edit: and these last for longer too. So you can save tons of money buy buying those.

I used to smoke quite a bit, for over 5-6 years but it was taking it's toll on my health. I have quit now for about a month and plan on keeping that way, nicotine is a powerful addiction.

The first time I smoked was when I was 13. I didn't smoke enough to get addicted though. When I turned 26, I started smoking again, but this time I did get addicted. There was just too much overwhelming stress and I was a in a country where 90% of males were smokers. After a few months, I decided to quit 'cause I hated the dependency and I was running out of money fast. The first time I quit cold turkey I had to suffer the withdrawal symptoms for about two days. Of course, I thought I was just getting sick or something. So much phlegm and what felt like blood pressure fluctuations and the classic sore throat. After I got through it, I compensated my urge with fruits. Several weeks later I felt like I could breathe again. Then, the stress returned and I started smoking again, but it didn't last 'cause I quit cold turkey for the second time. The same symptoms and process. When I turned 28, I had about two cigarettes and that's it. I haven't had an urge to smoke since. Maybe I'm killing it with food instead.

I listened to Allen Carr's "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" and it made me quit instantly. In his book, he explain the illusions about smoking and why we fear to quit, or to "give up our little friend" and think that our lives won't be the same again. I certainly recommend it as it has helped lots of other people to refrain from smoking.

Heh, funny I stumbled across this, as I am starting as of today to quit. Boredom is the absolute worst thing that I will deal with, because what better to keep occupied when you're bored than to smoke a cigarette. Other than that, just need to remember to not buy them out of habit when stopping at the store.

I never smoked, so I can't give real life experience, but I know a friend who got himself an electric cigarette and started smoking more rarely. I don't know if he stopped smoking, but that would be a start I think.

Hi, I used to some alot too although not as long as you i did smoke for 4 years i started my freshman year of highschool but i quit right after. It was really hard at first but I had my friends there to help me. My advice is to just do things that preoccupy you like drawing or something. I personally believe that quitting is determined by will power so if you really want to stop i know you will.

Good luck and I hope that you can quit

Smoking is very bad if those who have serious disease. So i never thought i would stop smoking. For me smoking is not a bad thing as long as it knows the exact circumstances to smoke.

What would those circumstances be? Smoking is what causes the diseases, so it's bad no matter who you are. Not just for those who already have diseases.

Why would you start smoking? There's no benefit to starting at all if you never smoked before. Everyone knows the risks involved, and it costs money and makes you smell and look bad.

I started because of peer pressure. All my friends were doing it, now half of them regret it a lot because of health problems but can't bring themselves to quit, some quit and some still don't care, but we are still young.

Even if you just started you should stop now, there is no reason, none at all, to start smoking.

I know the risks. Plus I don't pay for them. My mom's a smoker but she never noticed when I took some of her cigarettes. I had my own, more personal reasons for starting. It just makes me forget about certain things for a while, you know?

It's not something I'm going to be talked out of, trust me. I know the risks but like I said, I have my own reasons. Thanks for the concern, though.

I started somewhere at the end of the 3rd grade of high school, when I was 17ish or so. Basically, I was looking for something to calm me down due to the massive national exam paranoia which emerged (Croatian student here, my class was the only the 2nd generation who had to take it), so probably the silliest way for me was to start smoking. Today, I have no intention on quitting smoking, the taste of tobacco in my mouth is quite enjoyable... but yeah, perhaps one trick that may gradually get you to the point that you stop smoking is to start smoking hand-rolled ciggies. :D I've been smoking them for a year now, and sometimes (since I'm a heavy slacker) you just can't be bothered rolling one, so your desire for a ciggie just passes by. :)

Okay, so:
- I have been smoking, on and off, for the last 7 years.
- Longest period without smoking: 2 months
- replacement for cigarettes during the periods I tried to quit: fruit. Mixed with social isolation, because most of my friends were smokers.
- I can refrain from smoking without going crazy, for days. I usually smoke 1/2 a pack per day.
- Lung condition: A-ok. Got a chest x-ray to prove it.

I really don't want to quit, ever. Of course, I tried, (20+ times) and it was pointless. So I said to myself, shikata ga nai, I might as well stop trying to quit and start aiming to smoke less. I think it's the most realistic option.

Because, all you quitters out there, you have to admit you sometimes wish you could light a cigarette.
For example, when watching or re-watching Cowboy Bebop:

One last thing: abstinence is not quitting. It's just denial. But learning to make friends with the vice is closer to quitting, I think.

What I want to say by abstinence and denial is basically that quitting smoking is a conscious effort to refrain from something you enjoy. It's not a moment, it's a long process of continuous abstaining. So if you think you've quit smoking, in my opinion, you're actually avoiding it, all the time, being just a very self-disciplined smoker. And yes, I believe relapsing happens more often than not.
Hope what I said is clearer now.

Ah, I see.

Well, I don't really enjoy smoking any more though. The only time I enjoy smoking is when I'm with friends who smoke as well, but because they are my childhood friends, I don't see them that often. Every other time I smoked simply to relieve my cravings, which get very bad. I get very jittery when I need a cigarette and I always feel like it would be nicer to just smoke than deal with that. But I'm smoking just to feel normal again, because I'm addicted, not because I'm enjoying it. I don't enjoy having to go out in the cold or rain or having to constantly brush my teeth or change my clothes so I don't smell (my girlfriend hates the fact that I smoke). I don't enjoy watching the clock at work or school, counting down the minutes until I can get outside and smoke. And when I think about the money I spend on cigarettes, it's like... I could have taken my girlfriend out on a date or bought myself a video game or something.

But the self-disciplined smoker, that part has truth. Some addictions never go away, you just learn to live with them... And relapsing definitely happens. Especially when drunk or stoned. >.<

My biggest obstacle is I don't want to be one of those people that isolates himself from his friends, especially since I don't see them that often... but the little time I spend with them is enough to keep my addiction going for the rest of the year, like, 95% of when I smoke cigarettes I'm alone. If I want to quit, which I do, I'll just have to deal with that somehow. Not seeing my friends would be the true abstinence. I don't see myself being a social smoker either because my cravings do get that bad and are hard to handle. I started as a social smoker.

First of all, I'd like to acknowledge the fact that you want to stop smoking because I think this is a choice that smokers find hard to do and I'm glad because I know you won't regret this decision.

Anyway, I'm not a smoker but my friend is and I help him and encourage him to stop. In the end, we thought that starting with e-cigarettes would be good. It's almost the same as smoking because you still get the effect of the nicotine but it's better because you can smoke anywhere and anytime since it's not harmful for the environment and it doesn't produce secondhand smoke. And then there are non-nicotine juices for e-cigs which you can use little at a time so that you can gradually get used to it. This is the part that helps you stop in a way that you feel like you're smoking without actually getting the bad effects of the nicotine.

Or maybe if you want to stop completely or have no money for e-cigs (Because they are expensive considering the refills you have to buy often), I suggest you eat chewing gum or candy often. It helps to satisfy your craving or urge to have something in your mouth or whatever it is that smokers crave for.
