It was a good manga, but then author decided to give tennis players bankais...

...and then this manga started to fail miserably.
I'm all for reasonable exaggerations, but the second half of it just doesn't make sense.
It's like samurai manga with occasional unrealistic techniques and suddenly characters start fire lazors from their eyes and fart tornadoes.

It started to become "meh" long before that when the author decided that for tennis to be exciting, the plays and techniques needed to reach DBZ proportions.

That was a problem for me as well. I just decided to not take anything seriously and to enjoy the creativity. One of the other things that bothers me is that these guys are in middle school. MIDDLE SCHOOL.

I also didn't like it when everyone started having their own special techniques and when almost every match was a comeback from 5-0 to 7-5. What the hell? And even more when the magic techniques appeared. At that point I simply started skipping the matches.

Is it the same in the anime, or they made it more reasonably there?

l'm considering reading the manga but I remember that in a prince of tennis movie, the two players would fly high into the sky and tsunamis would come out of no where lol. The anime seemed good at first but I agree with all the other comments, not sure why it's rated so highly but I'm gonna give the manga a try

I've been avoiding this manga for a couple of years already, and I finally gave in to curiosity and began reading it earlier... I'm at chapter 145, and nothing too supernatural has happened yet, but I'm already getting sick of the manga. It's good, but there are so many stereotypes in sports/martial arts manga that's appearing, and it's annoying, lol. I'm not even up to the infamous superpower part.

Like Aris18 said, it's ridiculous that they're in middle school and doing this stuff. Lol. They all look like they're in college (except for Ryoma), and there's always yet another bored but cool genius who lounges as he watches the players - and then he gets defeated by Ryoma in a comeback. ZZZZZZZZZZZ. New material please.

I really don't have anything against "supernatural" abilities in sports manga/anime, but I agree that they exaggerated a lot in the second half... Playing tennis blind, smashing your opponent into the seats of the crowd, predicting the future, draw your opponents balls to yourself or hit the fucking net every god damn time...

It's just too much, but I still enjoyed it regardless.
