I haven't seen the anime but I have read the novel. If you want a spoiler, though I'll leave it at quite minor details:

It is actually decent how it is handled and not some odd "suddenly friends" situation.

On a side note, imo, its after this next arc that it starts to finally get good though in truth its the arc after even that the MC really starts to finally come into his own and properly grow and the story opens up a great deal.

Just be warned that this arc's more positive end isn't any sort of indicator of the entire story's tone as if there is no real loss. Extremely minor not really spoiler but just about the nature of the story's tone for those wandering... Literally no actual spoiler details but marking as spoiler anyways just to be safe:
