Praise: The best casting in my opinion was Alan Rickman as Severus Snape, and Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange. I don't believe there's a soul on earth who'd act either of those as well as these awesome actors! Other great casting was Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy, Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, Robbie Coltraine as Hagrid (although he let himself down in Half-Blood Prince, imo)... which reminds me, the people who played Cormac MacLaggen and Lavender Brown in Half-Blood Prince were simply perfect! In fact, I think Lavender Brown is one of the best acted characters in the whole series! Oh gods, and I nearly forgot - Luna and Neville are perfectly acted too :3
Criticism: Ah. Bad casting. Bonnie Wright as Ginny Weasley - too young and then too mature. Timothy Spall as Peter Pettigrew - too much of a charicature. Whatsherface as Umbridge - just didn't like her. Maggie Smith as Minerva MacGonagall - she's a great actress but she's way older than I imagined Minerva to be. And Tom, the barman of the Leaky Cauldron, as a hunchback in Prisoner of Azkaban? Noo! It just didn't work DX I'm sure I'm missing people out, maybe I'll add to this list later.
Suggestions: My first suggestion - well it's not really a suggestion. You see, for me, Sirius Black = Strider, whose real name turns out to be Aragorn (you know him, right? ;D) So for me Sirius should be a lot rougher and yet a lot more attractive and definitely a lot less mad xD But I guess Viggo Mortensen wouldn't have worked as Sirius. So I'm struggling to think who I want instead!
I think David Thewlis does a good job as Remus Lupin, but he doesn't look at all like I expected Lupin to look. Then, I set to thinking - what *do* I imagine Lupin to look like? I couldn't answer my own question. Then, Lord of the Rings helped again! I was playing the game as Faramir and after completing one of the levels, I looked at Faramir's picture - and oh my gods! I had found my Lupin!! For me he has the perfect face for Lupin - it's kind of wolfish, but at the same time very calming and sober, and very very pretty >w<
Pictures:
But I want hair about half that length, loose fringe over his eyes, a bit lighter in colour, and definitely without the LOTR curls xD They're good for LOTR, but this is Harry Potter we're talking about. HARRY POTTER xD
I used to hate Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, until Half Blood Prince. But he's still not quite what I'd expect, visually. And then I set to thinking - Richard Harris isn't my perfect idea of Dumbledore either. I just assumed that Ian McKellen would have been the right man for the job, although he still wasn't perfect - it sounds stupid, but he has a big nose xD
It wasn't until I saw an old episode of Top Gear that I found my Dumbledore: Patrick Stewart!! I hadn't even thought of him before but ever since that moment he has been my favourite for the role. For one thing, he has "no accent" (obviously he has a British accent, but he has a neutral one, whereas Michael Gambon had an Irish accent) and for me Dumbledore has a perfectly unaccented voice. His voice is also quite deep and calming without being harsh. Patrick Stewart would be able to portray all aspects of Dumbledore's character - the humour and magic, the care and affection, the anger and the raw power. And he definitely looks the part. Blue eyes, long thin nose... just give him long white hair and beard and half-moon glasses and he's Albus >w<
Pictures:
You may know him as captain of the starship Enterpise...
His eyes go all crinkly when he smiles! Just like Dumbledore ^^
... and his forehead wrinkles in exactly the same way that I imagine Dumbledore's forehead to wrinkle!! xD
I also think that if they ever remake the series a long way down the line (a decade or two) then they should consider Richard Armitage for the role of Severus Snape. He wouldn't be able to beat Alan Rickman, but he'd be spectacular *w*
aw man, this is really hard and will end up being really really really long ^__^;;
but, aside from agreeing with everything Teriyaki said xDD - as always, ne? - here's my blow-by-blow opinion ;3 (and don't worry, they do get shorter as they go down, you can actually watch me realising how little people will want to actually read all of this xDD)
Dan Radcliffe as Harry Potter = 8.5/10
yes, I decided this would be a lot less messy if I put things in spoilers xDD but yes, I think Dan is a wonderful wonderful wonderful Harry and I'd be hard-pressed to think of anyone better ^__^ he seems to capture the incessant curiosity of Harry and also Harry's surprising and always lovely innocence in his little eyes :) I think he understands a lot of Harry's motivations and really does seem to emerse himself in the character and I can't wait to see his performance for the next movies!!!
so why not a perfect 10? firstly, Order of the Phoenix.. okay, you can put quite a lot of it down to Michael Goldenburg being not so good and David Yates being new to directing films but still! Even Dan admitted that he was on autopilot for that movie - so down a mark you go! And the other half a mark deducted is for cutting his hair (boo! we want Prisoner-hair!!! >:( !!!) and for his wandering jaw whenever he gets angry "xDD though he has tamed that now ^__^ well done Dan..
Rupert Grint as Ronald Weasley = 10/10
I honestly don't think there is anyone in this entire universe who could have done a better job ^__^ Rup is just incredibly subtle - he either thinks ridiculously hard about every single thing he's going to do or just is naturally brilliant ^__^;; I love his vocal acting too and his understanding of Ron and the books is wonderfully apparent. Got to say, anyone who makes a rap about how much they want to be in the Harry Potter movies definately deserves to be there, right? ^__^
Emma Watson as Hermione Granger = 7/10
Sorry to any Emma fans, but I'm not with you so much on this one ^__^;; I like her and I think she was absolutely magnificent in the first two films, but.. she just seemed to get too consciencious (which I can't spell apparently xD) as she got older. The Hermione from the books would never say a line such as, "Is that what my hair looks like from the back?" and yes, I'm thoroughly aware that she didn't write the script but that line kind of sums up for me the problems with Emma.. she gets too afraid of making herself look a bit silly - something Rupert has never ever done - and this is a fatal flaw for me, seeing as Hermione is a ridiculous character. Loveable, brilliant and one of my favourites but a characature rather than the more real Harry and Ron. For me, Hermione can be summed up by one word: "flounce" In the first two, Hermione's got it. In the others? she's still good, but she's not the Hermione I loved from the books or Philosopher's and Chamber :'(
Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy = 10/10
Oh my goodness this guy is good. Absolutely perfect for Draco (though he auditioned for Harry and Ron first - like Rupert he really wanted to be in the films which I think is important, I think it's obvious who is and isn't a fan of the books) he's shone in each film (apart from 5. Because they gave him about two lines in 5. ¬___¬) and especially in Half-Blood. Pure genius.
Alan Rickman as Severus Snape = 100/10
That's no typo up there by the way ^__^ yep, one full hundred out of ten for the genius that is Alan Rickman. And guess what - he wasn't their first choice?!?!?! DX who else - other than a ventrilaquist (which is another word I can't spell - dear me!) - could speak whilst moving their lips so little?! xD
Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange = 10/10
Another perfect - but not first - choice. Helena steals every single scene she's in. Full stop. All I can say is thank goodness Narcissa Malfoy's actress had a baby or else we'd have her as Bellatrix rather than Helena DX how would we ever cope?!?!?
Richard Harris as Dumbledore = 8/10
Warmth? Yes. Gentleness? Yes. Serene scariness? Yes. Sparkle? eh.. It seems that no one has that Dumbledore sparkle and though Harris gets close for me there's something lacking. He's a good choice yes, but wouldn't have been suitable for the later films I don't think, considering how much more gung-ho Dumbledore's role becomes xDD
Michael "Corner-Man!" Gambon as Dumbledore = 7/10
Yes, same score. It would be lower if I hadn't loved his performance in Half-Blood so much. In Half-Blood for me he captures the magic of Dumbledore, the sparkle, the unexplained power, the playfulness and the quirkiness. "I do so enjoy knitting patterns" seems to sum up who Dumbledore is and Gambon has that kind of tongue-in-cheek approach during 6. However, in his previous outings as the most powerful magician of all time I find him lacking. "DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIIIIIIIIYAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" was not what I wanted to hear from Dumbledore ^__^;; and he moves around wayy too much in Order it bugs me so bad! >.< I'm afraid I abhore him in Harry's trial >.<
Gary Oldman as Sirius Black = 5/10
hmm.. I have a feeling this one is my own personal fault ^__^;; but I just don't like him. I think overtly - and unneccessarily - hysterical in Prisoner and the mood swings he goes through are just confusing as hell (one minute I'm crrrrrrrazy as a coconut but the next I've calmned down and the twelve years in Azkaban that made me crrrrrrazy have been nullified by- what the hell this doesn't make any sense!!! ¬__¬ he's not that crazy dammit.) I admit, I like his performance in the 'hug-Harry-in-the-family-tree-room' because the dynamic works well but man.. they could have chosen much better.
And anyway, I just thought - he was supposed to escape the Azkaban-crrrraziness by transforming into a dog. ¬__¬
oh, and the dog is all wrong. I've seen many dogs that would have been better. xD
Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood = 10/10
Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.
Ralphe Fiennes as Voldemort = 10/10
Creepy, powerful, gives me goosebumps.. what more do you want?
Bonnie Wright as Ginny Weasley = 4/10
ahh.. I thought we'd hit this little snag - and just when it was going so well! but seriously, Wright was the not the wright choice in my opinion ;3 for a start, she looks about nine until suddenly she goes all Galadriel on us in Half-Blood which seems to make very little sense to me although maybe that was the only way they could make her seem older.. To me, Bonnie seems to have missed the thing that makes Ginny Ginny - she's a tomboy. She's grown up surrounded by her brothers, quietly learning from them and then suddenly exploding on the scene with a rather frighteningly good reducto curse and bat bogey hex! The point of Ginny is that she's gung-ho, determined, strong.. in a sense, that she's boyish. Bonnie's Ginny seems too feminine and childish for such a headstrong and self-assured character. Sorry Bonnie >.<
Jessie Caves as Lavender Brown = 10/10
for more info, see my post on the Half-Blood Prince Verdict forum xDD and please write on it because no one has! boo!!!!!
Imelda Staunton as Umbridge = 6/10
Sorry. Wrong choice. In any light I can imagine and even with the most advanced make up technology Imelda Staunton does not look like a toad. And I know you may be thinking, 'yeah, but people in real life don't actually look like toads, that was just J.K-sama writing about a character who looks like a toad' but, trust me, I've met someone who looks like a toad. Exactly like a toad. They should have cast her. She would have been terrifying in pink. Or my old biology teacher who knew nothing about Biology but tried to counsel us instead. We all called her Umbridge. She would have been better. That said, Staunton does make a good effort considering that she can't help being the wrong person for the job. So well done. Slightly.
Julie Walters as Molly Weasley = 4/10
This is probably unfounded but I hate this choice. "There's only one place we're going to get this" *look around table smiling patronisingly* "Diagon Alley" AAARRRRRGGGHHH!!!!!! >:( so much hate! to be honest, I don't like the actor for Arthur either - he makes Mr Weasley way too creepy for a man whose one passion in life is light bulbs =__=;;
and maybe I'll stop there.. seeing as I think I've ranted at everyone I really wanted to rant at (apart from Kamelot but I always want to rant about them and this is not the place xDD) and sorry to Teri ^__^;; I realise I didn't follow your 'Praise, Criticism, Suggestions?' structure but I have a feeling you enjoyed reading it anyways, even if no one else will because it's so damn long DX apologies to all those people who have lives and don't want to read the rabblings of me >w< and also apologise to fans of actors/characters/films I've expressed anti-opinions on ^__^;; gomen!
oh and by the way, everyone got an average score of 13.9/10.
I kind of think Snape's score mayyyy have screwed with the average a little ^__^;;
AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! don't cast someone just because they look Chinese but have a Scottish accent!!!!! dammit! just don't do it!!! because this is what happens when you do!!!!!! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!! >:( [/rant] ^__^;;
haha xD thanks! glad you enjoyed reading it - it is, after all, pretty much the reason I wrote it >w< and you never know, maybe it will inspire others to come onto our humble page and rant a little xD fingers crossed, ne? ^w^
