Amazing how there is a way for someone who can't use magic to still earn enough points to be a top student 9_9 At least he didn't screw Colette, he should have made her joining a condition of him joining the others. Also what is Colette stupid, she could just shoot Rosty down with three words "He's not gay" (or is he? what teen thinks its normal to nightly bathe with their effeminate big dicked roommate? o_0). What is she worried about? And what the hell is Rosty trying to do anyway, does he not like Colette? That was just a pure cock block move. And since when are the fire and ice guy working together? Didn't he almost kill him?
Yeah that blonde definitely has some ulterior motive.
Nice to hear the students can and have actually died in the dungeon as the only way this show can be any good is for one of these kids to die. I was just thinking that the problem with so many of these fantasy shows is there are consequences despite these amazing powers and battles. Though I doubt this show will go there, or if they do it will be Colette so Will doesn't have a romantic rival for elf girl.

I was on the fence for this theory but after this episode, I think I’m convinced that Rosti is some kind of highly specialized (ice) clone of Elfaria.

(F)Rosti (S)Nowman

I feel dumb not realizing this weirdly suspicious name. Plus Rosti doesn’t like fire or anything to do with warmth. I’m not sure how much more obvious they can make it unless they bamboozle us.

Also, unless I’m blind, during the tournament, Elfaria didn’t have any kind of device/magic/object to watch the tournament and when Will revealed details of their childhood during the tournament Elfaria gets embarrassed about it which the only she could know that is through Rosti (if he is indeed a clone).

As for why Rosti is a male? Probably because since Will and Rosti are of same sex they can be roommates and Elfaria can “be with” Will.

@paulchaested

Beat me too it, after my post wondering what is going on with Rosti, it occured to me the only thing that made sense is if its Elfaria in disguise.
Never thought of the ice clone angle but yeah that does make sense. I was going to look the name up but you already did yeah, that pretty much confirms it.
I wondered why she seemed out of it during the tournement. I am going to have to go back and listen to Rosti's conversation with the blonde tower spy girl again.

edit:nothing in their conversation, (other than Rosty saying "he" loves Will more than anyone) but watch the look on Rosty's face after Will tell's the story about fighting 10 Elfie clones at once. Shocked embarrassment, just like Elfaria was feeling ;) Weird when all his other friends and admirerers were happy and cheering since he just beat the ice guy.

Also note his not suspicious ice blue bolo tie clasp. ;)

Is Will a six year old? He just takes holding hands and taking baths with his male roommate in stride as if it's totally normal? That was just awful. Rosty being an ice clone would explain his attitude, but not Will's. I skipped over most of the painfully stupid 'date.'

I like Lihanna so far.

Episode 9

The praxis begins and with an all-star team consisting of Will, Colette, Sion, Lihanna, Wignall, and Julius nothing could possibly go wrong, right? Under normal circumstances that would be the case, but unfortunately, that isn't he case. There's a serial killer on the loose who has already killed and beheaded two of the professors, and he's probably the one who directed the monsters to stampede the base camps. On top of that, Will's party gets separated after falling to floor 11, and there's a difficulty spike there as well. Will is with Wignall, and Wignall is being really difficult on himself there, but he needs to trust Will, at least until they get out of this place. In what was supposed to be a challenge quest ends up turning into a battle for survival.

OK here we go, all the smug bastards rendered useless (though not after showing Will's dungeon skills being useless, so mages CAN specialize in close quarters fighting?), murderers on the loose actually killing people. This may finally get good.

Episode 10

And now, Wignall is finally over his inferiority complex, and it took somebody who was in his shoes to get him to finally realize that he is the envy of the academy as even though he doesn't match up by elf standards, he's still way better than most humans can accomplish. And with Will protecting Wignall entrusting him to save the day, he does just that. Afterwards, Kiki becomes really useful as Will's cute familiar is able to locate the rest of his party, all while being trained by Workner that him and Edward know to head down to the 11th floor to find Will's party. And then just as Colette and Lihanna encounter the guys who have been killing the professors in Marze and his headless partner who has taken Bruno's head. Marze was the one who summoned that powerful boss in the 10th floor in the Evil Grand Duke. These guys are going to be in for quite a fight, but now everybody is together all while Workner and Edwards are on their way.

So he can kill the professors but the students are too tough? Well anyway here's the common enemy to unite them together, though kind of redundant when you just spent a whole episode of them all realizing they have something in common.

Episode 11

It's no wonder why the Evil Grand Duke is a 270-credit monster, and is found on the 25th floor. Neither Will's sword nor any spells the students are capable of can scratch it. But then Will remembers the whole wand and sword concept, and combines the two to defeat it. Will knows quite a lot about the monster, and that makes all the difference realizing that running is not an option and that the best course of action is to defeat it so that the other monsters will lose their way. Julius casts a powerful spell using knowledge passed from Elfaria, but that doesn't do anything. Likewise, Lihanna's strongest spell at point blank doesn't do anything. Will's goggles break but after Sion punches Will at his request, Will is all powered up, but his sword doesn't do anything. Thenafter Rosty dropped him a shard, Will finally unleashes his hidden potential to combine wand and sword as Sion casts a spell to power up his sword that's strong enough to slay the Duke. This is a case of what doesn't kills them makes them stronger, and Will made all the difference as while he can't use magic, he has studied up and know that the day would come when his sword becomes a wand.

@zkeleton They will still need the teachers to save them since everybody's wiped out after that battle, and not to mention there are still dangerous monsters in the way and because they fell to the floor that they don't know the best way to get out.

Episode 12 (Season 1 Finale)

While Will defeated the Duke with his supercharged sword, everybody is too wiped out from the battle, making them sitting ducks against the enemies. But it's the Magia Vander Aaron to the rescue as it just so happens that he and his part led by the Finn Tribe member known only as Finn were on their way back from a deep floor expedition to take out all the lesser monsters. And with that, everybody makes it back alive and in the end 11 professors were killed, but all of the students survived. Then Will and Sion have a sparring match that was interrupted when Workner and Edward catch them doing something they shouldn't be doing. Then Finn finds a broken sword that he brings to Caldaron for investigation. And then it ends with the final exam as after this it's graduation for all the sixth years. So with that, the first season comes to an end, and a second season has been announced as Will's journey to master the sword and making it his wand has only just begun. From the look of things, Will is a member of the Finn tribe seeing that his role in all that matches with what a Finn is, but at this time nobody can confirm it. Pretty much, it's mostly a transitional episode here seeing that there's a lot of loose ends that got tied up.

Final Thoughts

On the surface, it looks like a ripoff of Mashle, but it's clear that the show goes in its own direction that's more story-driven and all about self determination, and the story writing was nicely done. This show has great action, storytelling, and character development, all while establishing itself as a long journey in which the MC faces great odds to get there. That said, this show does have its issues as the production values aren't the best, the story writing takes a number of conveniences, and the show doesn't use its supporting cast in the best of ways. In all, it's a show that makes for a nice underdog story in the end.

Well, there was good action, animation, and art. I liked the OST. Once again, though, I'm left wondering how someone with no magic is displaying superhuman physical abilities. "What is he made of?" Yes, someone in the show please explain that. And the hostility towards him just got old fast. The show didn't really draw me in. Maybe next season will work out better.

I keep wondering about the crystal that Rosty tossed him. What the hell was that? What did he do with it? I expected him to shove it into his sword somehow (maybe a hollow handle?) but as far I I know he just shoved it up his own ass because it was never shown or mentioned again. Yet somehow his sword gained wand powers.

It was a decent show to watch for the most part, but I feel like it could have used a polish pass or two on the script.

Rosty also told him to "remember" then there was a flashback of Elfina...and a flashback to a woman (Will's mother??) saying she wanted him to save the world or something.

So, either Rosty is like some sort of clone of Elfina (remember she can make clones of herself) or Rosty has something to do with that woman who was holding him as a baby.

I thought it was definitely a decent show, I ended up liking it more than that other Magic Academy show that had the more serious tone...the one where the guy was just there to get revenge on the teachers who killed his mother...Seven Spellblades or something?

lol the leader of the wizards tower's name is Mysterious Old King. Amazing.

The art direction is much stronger than the story or the writing. Most of the characters were pretty annoying and I can't really remember anything particularly interesting that happened over the course of the series. It's far from the worst anime I've watched recently, but nowhere near the best. 6/10

Oh good a second season...said no one. Yeah pretty meh. So there ARE really good swordsman out there that everyone knows about and Will is only weird because he is a good swordsman who wants to do magic...so why doesn't everyone just be like 'Will just go be a swordsman you're really good"? I don't know this whole thing with him wanting to be at magic school even though he can't do magic and SOMEHOW he is still able too (it's like someone wanting to be a doctor by getting into college by being a really good football player but having no ability to learn any biology once there and takes math and geology classes instead), and all the other students (and teachers) hating him to the point of wanting to kill him just so they can have spectacular battles is dumb. At least make him a jerk who steals their girlfriends or something, its just all so strenuously contrived I never cared once whether he won or lost. Too bad because it did have some great animation. (the only thing that kept me watching)

Yeah not sure you saw the earlier discussion but given Rosty's (and Elfina's) actions and reactions Rosty is probably a magic "clone" of Elfina but disguised as a male.

Also when she said "rememeber it's wand AND sword", uhh remember what? Are the characters supposed to know the name of the show? o_0
