Episode 9

The counterattack begins as Ryu goes charging into the Freya Familia stronghold. While that's happening, Horn attacks Bell, and then after pinning him down she gives Bell his dagger back and has him stab her with it, transforming into Syr just as she is dying. After going through this, Bell confronts Freya and despite telling her that Syr is a part of her, she's over being that made-up character. And then Hestia activates the sacred flame to burn away all the brainwashing that Freya put Orario under as he has had Hermes gather firewood for this moment. Not only is the spell broken, but everybody is aware that were being manipulated by Freya all along. So to settle things once and for all, Freya declares a war game. Hestia really pulled it off there as she had the presence of mind to make Orario her temporary temple to undo the charming. But now, they have one more battle to fight, and that is win the war game against the Freya Familia.

Ryu breaks out of the Freya Familia's dungeon and causes a ruckus, while Bell is led to a room by Horn, who lashes out at him before Bell finally realizes that Syr and Freya are one and the same. Horn gives Bell his dagger and has him stab herself with it, then uses a spell to change herself to Syr to convey Freya's feelings of grief to him. Bell confronts Freya and refuses to believe that Syr is a work of fiction like Freya implies. Meanwhile, Hestia's plan comes to fruition as firewood infused with her blood burns in every fireplace, and she uses that to break Freya's spell. Everyone in Orario is outraged at Freya's machinations, and Freya declares a War Game against the Hestia Familia.

Is there any reason whatsoever that Hestia would have to accept a war game?

Honestly, the level of obsession Freya has with Bell has gone past scary and all the way to silly.

Hey look! Ais did a thing!

Maybe people should start calling Bell the Familia Destroyer. This will be the third one after all.

Episode 10

The Freya Familia has challenged the Hestia Familia to a war game with Bell as the prize, and it will be a game of hide-and-seek in the Olza ruins. Other familias are trying to decide if they will assist, and most of the familias are supporting the Hestia familia seeing that the Freya Familia is strong and their assistance helps even the odds, but many are opting not to get involved. In addition, the Hestia Familia is given a handicap where they only need to find Freya, while the Freya Familia needs to find everybody from the allied army to win. Knowing that Freya will throw her entire bag of tricks that it's going to be a tough battle, and Lili is well aware that a head-on attack is a surefire way to lose, so a special strategy is needed. So pretty much, this is all about preparing for the war game as many of the townspeople are out to get back at Freya for using them.

The War Game is basically hide-and-seek, and the Freya Familia have a disadvantage in terms of numbers, but that's the only disadvantage they really have, especially considering the Loki Familia is not actively participating. And Bell thinks that something is going to happen during the War Game that could potentially influence the outcome. The alliance marches into the battlefield as the War Game begins.

Again....was there any actual reason for Hestia to accept a war game? I don't see the upside to this. Either she and everyone else loses Bell forever and he gets turned into a mindless sex toy or Freya will go away? Everyone is already pissed at Freya so its not like she can pull anymore shit like that. Hestia is basically betting Bell's life for a chance at making Freya go away. If she even has the backbone to tell Freya to return to Heaven that is. Even if they do win she'll probably think up something stupid for Freya to do instead of returning her to Heaven.

Nevermind that its universally agreed that her side will get stomped (I'm sure Bell will dattebayo and win the war game anyway despite the overwhelming odds but Hestia should have known better to even take this chance).

Remember when this show was about dungeon diving and fighting cool monsters and what not?

Episode 11

The Freya Familia has concentrated all its forces in one place, making the hide-and-seek aspect of the War Game a moot point. While everyone struggles against the Freya Familia's top soldiers, Bell tries to sneak past in an attempt to take out Ottarl. But Van finds him, though Bell manages to take him out without wasting his trump card. However, even with Ottarl allowing him to use Argo Vesta, it's not enough, and Bell is being thrown around like a rag doll.

And the War Game begins with Lili commanding the troops, finding out that the Freya Familia has concentrated all of their troops on the west side of the island. Seeing how powerful this familia is that they show why they were willing to give the Hestia Familia such a big handicap as the hide-and-seek was just a cover for the true objective. So the troops split, while Bell tries to sneak in to confront Freya himself. But Van sniffs him out and after Bell overpowers Van, in comes the familia's strongest member Ottarl to attack Bell. While Bell unleashes his strongest attack on Ottarl, that didn't do much damage, and Bell is powerless to stop him. Bell and company need to come up with something, and fast seeing that they are up against such a tough opponent.

Yeah, I don't think he quite understands what a free attack means. Either that or the translation was bad. Maybe he meant "I'll let you make the first move"

While I knew that this show wasn't going to finish up before the end of the year given its 15-episode length, having an episode delayed, as well as Ubel Blatt taking its timeslot, confirmed it. If I had to guess, the show will finish up sometime during the spring season.

@GridironOtaku And my hunch was correct. This show will resume sometime in the spring season that was just confirmed today with the last four episodes.

Episode 12

Where things left off, Freya had laid out a trap and the allied faction fell right into it. Daphne got brutally injured and Cassandra ended up surrendering so that she can heal her ally, all while Bell is engaged in combat with the familia's strongest member in Ottarl in bad shape. But Ryu's arrival turns the tables as she has leveled up two levels since the last time the familia last fought her. And then Ryu unleashes her new ability, Alise's flame enchantment spell Astrea Record. With that move, Ryu wipes out a good portion of the Freya Familia's forces, and then overwhelms Dainsleif to take out one of the familia's generals. Just when it looked like Freya had the allied faction right where she wants them, Ryu turned the tables.

Episode 13

Hedin betrays Heith as the moment of truth has arrived. Anya enters the battle after being dragged into it by her brother Allen, and then Mia enters the battle to fight Ottarl as the tavern owner is revealed to be the Freya Familia's former captain, along with other tavern employees as they are allowed to enter being members of a familia. After having a chance to recover, Bell charges in with Ryu, and Anya unleashes a screech to apply a debuff on everybody to allow the remaining fighters to take out most of the Freya Familia's soldiers. And now, that leaves only Ottarl and Freya left to defeat. The tables have really turned in a hurry as they got reinforcements, and then some.

With that, it will be another three weeks before the next episode airs. Next episode comes February 26, while the season finishes a week after that.

Freya's forces, led by Allen, go on the offensive and eliminate several of the gods and their troops from the competition. But just when things seem dire, Ryu arrives stronger than ever. After unleashing her new ability, which draws on the power of her late friends from the Astrea Familia, she defeats Hogni. Then Hedin turns on his allies and attacks Heith before she has a chance to heal Hogni.

Ryu's tavern coworkers join the War Game as well, and Mia fights Ottarl while Ryu heals Bell. Anya lets out a scream to weaken the Gulliver Brothers, and the four are split up and taken out in a smokescreen. Now the only major fighters left are Allen and Ottarl.

I felt like I missed an episode with the Ryu power ups and flashbacks--and they were just flashes--that had me wondering what the heck had I missed.

Still, the two best episodes of this season of this show, even with the Deus Ex, sort of, of the lightning guy attacking his own side. I also appreciate all the torn clothing. Fingers crossed Ryu and Lili end up in the same state.

Episode 14

The war game is in the final stage as Allen and Ottarl are the only guys left standing in the way. Hedin engages with Ottarl as he has assembled a team consisting of Bell, Mia, and Ryu to deal with him while Hedin casts a powerful spell in the background. While that's going on, a wounded Hogni switches sides to helps out Anya to deal with Allen, and backed into a corner Allen unleashes his ultimate spell. While Bell and company are landing hits on Ottarl, he withstands all of it and unleashes his beast mode to overwhelm everybody. But even with his overwhelming strength, everybody is still not out of this. One more episode left to go as the alliance has just two more guys to deal with, but they are also the two strongest warriors of the Freya Familia.

Hedin convinces Hogni to defect, and Hogni helps Anya deal with her brother Allen. He reveals that Allen is holding back because he doesn't want to hurt his sister, but this only steels Allen's resolve, as he decides enough is enough and unleashes a lightning-infused charge at both Anya and Hogni. Meanwhile, Hedin assists Bell, Ryu, and Mia, launching lightning strikes to distract Ottarl while the others strike. But once Ottarl's armor is broken, he gets even stronger and charges like a raging bull at his opponents. Even so, they're not backing down, as Hedin proclaims he's opposing Freya for her sake, to save her from madness.

Episode 15 (Finale)

Hestia comes in to give Bell a stat boost as it's now up to him to defeat Ottarl with Hedin and the others just about spent. After a dramatic battle, Bell and company are victorious. But there's still Allen to deal with as he chases after Bell in a foot race to reach Freya. And then Welf comes in to deal with Allen to allow Bell to make it to Freya and win this war game with Bell letting Freya know that she has been turned down. After that, Freya decides to leave Orario having lost her status, but after Bell drops by to greet her, she decides to resign as a goddess and just become Syr from hereon out. That was some battle there with Ottarl and a dramatic way to finish the fight, and in the end Freya was humbled by all that.

Final Thoughts

This season continues to do a nice job building off of season 4 that was easily the best season, and while this isn't as great as that season, it still is better than the three that preceded it. This show's storytelling continues to improve, all while the characters are nicely developed, all while it makes great use of action. That said, this season has some pretty cringeworthy moments there, all while the season's plot had some issues, but in the grand scheme of things it continues to show how better this show has been getting since the start of this show.

Hestia and Haruhime power up Bell, but it's still not enough to take down Ottarl. Hedin suffers a crushing blow, but he boosts Bell's speed, and Bell, Ryu, and Mia finally manage to bring Ottarl to his knees. Then Allen chases Bell as he tries to get to Freya, and Welf stops Allen in his tracks. Bell snatches Freya's flower, and Freya disbands her Familia. Later, Bell, Ryu, and the tavern staff all convince Freya to live as Syr from now on.
