I think John Smith is a fake name he thought of on the spot. Not sure though. But it is unlikely that Kyon has such a Western name like that.

Well I think I found something that could explain why the writer chose 'Kyon' for his nickname:

syll. kyon, ky-on ] The baby boy name Kyon is pronounced KYahN †. Kyon's language of origin is English and Old Greek. Old Greek origin: Derived literally from the word kyon with the meaning 'dog'. In Greek mythology, Kyon Kryseos was the 'golden dog' who protected the infant Zeus.

Kyon= Golden Dog: Kyon is the laborer and protector of Haruhi and friends.
Haruhi= Infant Zeus: Since Haruhi is seen as a god to some in the story.

While I was conducting research for names for my fan-fiction I decided to tackle the meaning behind Kyon's name again. This is what I found:

1) KUON KHRYSEOS was a golden dog set by Rhea to guard the infant god Zeus and his nurse the she-goat Amaltheia. Some say he was the same as Lailaps, the hound which Zeus first presented to Europa on Krete, and from her was passed on to King Minos, Prokris, Kephalos and Pandareos, before being placed amongst the stars as the Constellation Canis Major.

2) Khrysos is a Greek boy name. The meaning of the name is `Gold`

3) Within the definition of gold we can find: "Figuratively, something precious or pure" or "Something regarded as having great value or goodness: a heart of gold."

4) Through logic and the awareness that Kyon's surname starts with "S" and is between Sa and Su I came across this surname: Shimizu. Shimizu means, (清水, "pure water"). Whats even more interesting is that the characters can also read as Kiyomizu.

5) The origin of the surname: It is found throughout Japan, especially in the east. One family bearing this name is descended from Tokugawa Shigeyoshi (1745–1795), a son of the 9th Tokugawa Shogun, Ieshige.

6) Kyosuke, as far as first names go, seems to be the logical name that Kyon could have.

With this information I can conclude that 清水 is his surname and his sister gave him the nickname "Kyon" based on Kiyomizu. With the author's parallels to Greek mythology (however light it may be) also supports 清水 as his surname . [ Kyon Kiyomizu/Kyôn Khryseos ] In addition we can guess that his first name could be Kyosuke (which means: Respectful, or the reverent helper). The definition of the name fits with his role in the story and also fits nicely in the origination of his nickname. Kyosuke could be easily changed into "Kyon" by dropping '-suke'. With this, Kyon's full name could possibly be Kiyomizu Kyosuke (清水京介). Having said that, his first name could be anything under the sun. What is important is that there is enough evidence to support the possibility of 'Kiyomizu' as his last name.
But hey, I could be wrong! xD
