Episode 1 After a disappointing second season in which the first half adapted the weakest arc in the light novel series and the second half was rushed, this show is back. The Spirit Tortoise is down, but the next of the four guardian beasts, the phoenix, is about to revive and the other three heroes are nowhere to be found. Naofumi and company are back in the Melromarc Kingdom and is tasked by the queen to find the Staff Hero. Needing to find people to stand in for the heroes, Naofumi buys up all the slaves in Melromarc, and then heads to Zeltoble where the slave trader's uncle lives where there's an underground auction where demihumans from Lurolana Village are being sold, as well as an underground battle arena where Naofumi can make a fortune. Wanting to buy up all the slaves from Lurolana Village, he enters the three-on-three battle with Raphtalia and Filo, and needing to elevate their underdog status, they do just that and win the battle. Curious to see where this goes, but some of the vibe from the first season that made it so great is back. And it looks like Myne is up to something as she's plotting some sort of revenge against Naofumi, but that remains to be seen. Nevertheless, it's great to be back, and hopefully after taking a lot of time since the second season that this season turns out better in the end. Something to keep in mind going forward is that on the first promo poster for this season, the seven deadly sins were listed, all except for Sloth as there's significance in what that sin's omission means. |

It was crazy to find out the Staff Hero is the deposed king. The other three Cardinal Heroes are missing, and Naofumi's battle with Kyo left him and his party not at their best. Now they're fighting in an underground coliseum to get money to purchase more demi-humans. But there's a little over three months before the phoenix resurrects. |

I hope the entire season isn't just arena fighting. The show has some work to do to redeem itself from the last season. |

Episode 2 Here comes Nadia, whose real name is Sadeena and is an orca demin-human from Lurolana Village. Seeing that she's a friend of Raphtalia's who is also buying the slaves to free them that it's no wonder why she decided to fight Naofumi's team. Her sponsor was not pleased about how things transpired, so she had Sadeena join forces with Naofumi's team to face off against Murder Clown, who I believe is actually the white tiger demihuman Fohl, in an exhibition match. Raphtalia really showed off her power there, but she only defeated a dummy and Murder Clown would surrender afterwards with a warning. It turns out that the slave trader and department store owner were in on this operation and helped Sadeena obtain ownership of the slaves. Lots of twists and turns here, but then again this is an underground battling arena. |

Man, the sponsors must have really wanted to rig the match so things went a certain way. And it felt like Murder Clown wasn't actually there in person at all, given that conversation at the end that sounded like a radio call breaking up. |

Episode 3 Naofumi has become some sort of god here, but he's able to spot a fake slave. He sees Fohl and notices that his sister Atla is badly ailing. So he purchases the siblings and brings them back to the village after using his abilities to heal Atla. But then bandits come and attack the village Fohl fires the signal flare and Naofumi's party comes rushing back to take down those thugs. But seeing that he's part of the noble family that worships the Three Heroes that Naofumi makes them slaves in Siltvelt instead of executing them. And then it ends with the queen telling Naofumi that Motoyasu has been spotted, so Naofumi sets out to find the Spear Hero seeing that defeating the Phoenix will take all of them. This goes to show that anybody who meets Naofumi will have their fortunes changed just like with Atla, as well as those bandits that used to be coddled by nobility, now becoming slaves themselves. |

A fate worse than death for those bandits, how the tables have turned for them. And what was the deal with the former king when he saw Fohl and Atla? Did they remind him of past traumas? Now Motoyasu has been found. |

Naofumi created the most valuable slave targets in the country then didn't even leave a single fighter to protect the village. Smart move, Shield Hero. |

Episode 4 The one controlling Murder Clown, S'yne, shows up at the village and being unable to trust her, Naofumi tells her to get out. And then Naofumi goes to look for Motoyasu and finds him in a depressed and desperate state. Naofumi finds one of his old party members to get some information out of her as Motoyasu lost his mind in the Shield Tortoise's Kingdom fighting a boss he had no chance in defeating. Then he sets off for the tavern where Naofumi runs into Ren, whose party was wiped out, and Myne also happens to be there. And Ren is just a wreck as he's deflecting blame away not admitting that he treated this like a video game and not taking this seriously. And now, Ren is being seduced by Myne, with that bitch giving the mean look to Motoyasu just like she did with Naofumi at the beginning. Those other heroes sure have a lot of problems, and while Motoyasu has at least wisened up a little, Ren has gone in the other direction, and bringing them together is going to be really tough now. |

Motoyasu's become infatuated with Filo, to the point where he wants to marry her. Meanwhile, Ren refuses to believe he made mistakes. Wasn't expecting Murder Clown to just show up and announce herself to Naofumi and the villagers. And what's with her voice breaking up like that? |

That was some pretty bad tonal whiplash there. I wish they would be consistent with how they present Spear douche. If he's just going to be some comical fool of a character then they should just run with it and have him be a comically absurd idiot all the time. Something like Goldy from Eminence in Shadow. The way they go back and forth between presenting him as someone who's seriously needed and then show him as an over the top idiot it doesn't work. Also last season they told us that the other heroes somehow managed to fight off a wave while Naofumi was in the other world. So why was spear guy being looked down on by everyone after that? Which would have happened after he failed to defeat doom turtle. The way this show has handled the other heroes has always been a real weakness. |

Okay the absolute bark chewing stupidity of the other heroes has reached total absurdity. It's throwing the suspension of belief out the window and urinating on it. The show has become a sitcom. |

Episode 5 On the way back to the village after escaping Motoyasu's obsession with Filo, Naofumi's party runs into a trio of bandits who are much stronger than ordinary bandits as one of them casts a meteor spell that can break the shield prison. But they get help from S'yne, who Naofumi fought at the coliseum. S'yne is one of the heroes from a world that was destroyed by the bastards who sent those ruffians. So it's back to the village where training is going well, and a mole demihuman works for the blacksmith he trained under. And then Naofumi goes hunting as a prison housing a number of prisoners from the Three Heroes Church was destroyed by the Spirit Tortoise and while most of the prisoners are dead, some survived and are at-large. And along the way Naofumi runs into Motoyasu and Ren again as they are fighting each other. Quite a lot of troubling developments here, but at the very least things are going well at the village. |

So S'yne is from a destroyed world. That fact coupled with her voice breaking up makes me think her home world was quite literally a game. Naofumi and his group go searching for escaped prisoners, and he's found Motoyasu fighting Ren, who's resorted to becoming a bandit. |

Episode 6 Here's an episode focused on Ren as he was a hardcore gamer back in his world, but because he continues to approach everything as if it were just a video game that his recklessness got his party members killed. And to add insult to injury, Myne duped him just like what she did with Naofumi at the beginning, but unlike with Naofumi when it happened through no fault of his own, for Ren this was totally self-inflicted. And now, he's a bandit as greed got the better of him. So to resolve this problem, Eclair battles Ren, and being the master swordsman she is, she knows exactly how Ren is feeling with each of his strikes, and just like that he brought Ren back to his senses. And for those bandits who recruited him, turns out they aren't human and are the same as those that Naofumi fought at the start of the previous episode, so there's definitely something out there that's wreaking a lot of havoc that have yet to be uncovered. And if you remember, the first visual that came out for this season had the seven deadly sins on it, except for sloth. The sins have finally come into the picture, and there's something about sloth that makes it stand out as I have to think that's the sin Naofumi represents. |

Because of what happened with Ren, he now has two of the other Curse series, Greed and Gluttony. Eclair ends up fighting him to knock him to his senses. But what was with those two bandits at the end? It looked like they were actually souls. |

It doesn't matter how much lightning and ominous music you put behind him show. I am not going to take Ren seriously. Ren and Spearo are both utterly insufferable and do nothing but drag the show down even further. |

Episode 7 Here comes Rat, a monster researcher who was exiled from her homeland, but here at the village she can do her research freely so that she can make them stronger. And Naofumi gets a black dragon egg that he needs to carry around since Ren can't touch anything, and Atla ends up sneaking into Naofumi's bed. And then the dragon hatches from the egg, who Wyndia names Gaelion. Pretty much, Naofumi is gaining more allies here as the battle against the phoenix is going to be tough and he will need all the help he can get, and it's a good thing Rat arrived when she did. |

All right, I have some big problems with this episode. First, Naofumi casually insists Rat become his slave, and she happily agrees. That's awful. The slavery thing was bad enough before, but it's getting ridiculous and offensive at this point. Second, they just happen to run across monsters for Rat to raise as she's still being introduced. That's excessively contrived. The writing just keeps getting worse, and I'm downgrading my rating accordingly. |

Episode 8 Gaelion has fled, and Filo is infected with a curse that's causing her level to drop, and it's up to Naofumi to figure out what's happening while Atla slows the spread. Naofumi's party heads to the dragon's den where Filo goes crazy and is swallowed up alive by one of the dragons, and not only that but that thing takes over Naofumi's wrath shield. Turns out that dragon is Wyndia's father, the Emperor Dragon, and was defeated by Ren, and Quite a dangerous situation this is as the Eperor Dragon is really mad and is flowing with evil energy all over him. |

The dragon core Gaelion swallowed is draining Filo of her power, and the shield's curse causes her to go wild, resulting in her getting devoured whole. Turns out the dragon zombie that Ren killed was Wyndia's father. But the soul of the emperor dragon from Kizuna's world takes over Gaelion, and he starts absorbing power from the Wrath Shield. |

I actually like that the dragon swallowed that stone before they could stop it. If you've ever been around babies you know how fast they can shove something in their mouth before you can stop them. I've actually enjoyed these last few episodes, especially compared to what came before. They're going to have to do some explaining about this girl being the dragon's daughter. The chicken queen warned Naofumi not to use dragon parts in his shield. It was nice having a scene in an anime where the hero makes a plan right in front of their opponent and the opponent actually takes advantage of knowing exactly what the hero is going to try. |

Episode 9 Thanks to Atla, Naofumi and company were able to get away from the Emperor Dragon, but they need to come up with a new plan fast as Filo's level will be completely drained the next day. It is there that Wyndia reveals that she was raised by the Emperor Dragon when her father was killed, and that the dragon's upside down scale is its weakness. So after taking some time to regroup, Naofumi and company put their plan of attack into action. Atla attacks it to get Filo and Gaelion out, and then Raphtalia delivers the final blow to put it out of its misery. And while the Emperor Dragon is dead, its soul has been transferred to the baby dragon. That was some great teamwork there, and Naofumi has a reliable new companion to help them along. |

Atla ends up being the trump card against the Emperor Dragon, and it seems the soul of the dragon zombie has been reincarnated as Gaelion. Now the curse on Filo that was left by Kyo is gone; only Naofumi's stats are adversely affected. |

I have so many questions about dragon dad. What did he end up feeding her when she was a baby? How did he change diapers? How did she learn how to speak when the dragon didn't? Where did she get clothes? How is she so well adjusted when she was basically just raised by wolves? Also, where did the water come from in the cave? The cave was in the side of a hill. It's not like there was a lake on top of it. |

Episode 10 Melty is sent away on a training trip with Filo and Raph, and Eclair has been asked to fill in for her. And while Ren and Motoyasu have been found, Itsuki is still at-large, and the Bow Hero has been spotted at the fighting arena. And like the other heroes, Myne has duped him into believing her BS about raising money to save the slaves as Itsuki has become a believer of absolute justice. As she used to be part of Itsuki's party, Rishia wants to give him a piece of her mind and to do that she's out to fight him, and the slave trader made arrangements for the fight. So after dealing with Motoyasu and Ren, it's now Itsuki's turn as just like with the other heroes, Itsuki's mind was messed up by what happened in the last season, and his sense of justice is all messed up. |

Episode 11 Itsuki fires the first shot at Naofumi blaming him for everything wrong that’s happening. As it turns out, Itsuki’s bow has been tampered with by Myne that forces anybody hit by it to adhere to Itsuki’s twisted idea of justice. Rishia shows just how strong she has become since joining Naofumi’s party, and after her sword was broken, she tapped into her power that allows her to use translucent weapons, and she breaks the seal on Itsuki’s bow. And then Myne leaves behind a letter telling Itsuki that she has taken all of his prize money he won at the coliseum for herself as now she has duped all the heroes. As it turns out, Itsuki grew up wanting to be a champion of justice, but became blinded by his own misguided sense of justice when he did so poorly at school thata he became a shut-in instead, and Naodumi admits that everybody has their own sense of justice. One more episode left, and I’m getting the sense that this season is going to be a split-cour seeing that everything that has happened so far this season is build-up for a very big battle that’s coming and has been progressing with no urgency to get to it. |

Itsuki has the Pride Curse Series, and nothing Rishia says can get through to him. But somehow, Itsuki's bow gives her a new power and she manages to defeat him. And Malty making off with all of Itsuki's prize money was the final blow. Now Itsuki has become a mere shell of his former self; it's going to take a long time for him to recover, time that unfortunately is in very short supply. |

Man, Bow Hero really is more irredeemable than Sword or Spear. Where's the Filolial Queen? She should have killed Bow Hero by now and just summoned a new one. It would be easier and faster to just level up a new one instead of dealing with Bow Hero's self inflicted psychotic break. Honestly, the Filolial Queen should have already taken out Sword and Bow. She's not following through on her promise. |

Episode 12 (Finale) Now that all the heroes are brought back to their senses after having their egos broken by Myne, it’s full speed ahead to preparing for the battle against the phoenix. Before that, Raphtalia puts on her outfit she wore as the Katana Hero in Kizuna’s world, and Naofumi does paperwork. But then the village gets attacked by assassins from Q’ten Lo as they are looking to stop Raphtalia from taking the throne and putting on that miko outfit when she’s not the emperor amounts to declaring war. It turns out that Raphtalia is a descendant of royalty from an island nation nearby. As having assailants lurking is a risk Naofumi can’t afford to take that Naofumi decides to travel to Q’ten Lo to settle things diplomatically or go to war if necessary as Raphtalia has no interest in the throne, but they don’t see it that way. So with that, this season is over, and I got the sense that this is just the first half of a split-cour season given how much material is left before the encounter with the phoenix, but at this time nothing has been announced in regards to that or a season 4 coming. But that ending part where the “3” disappears has to mean something. Final Thoughts After an amazing first season followed by a disappointing second season that led to a lot of goodwill being destroyed, this one builds some of it back. This season at the very least, things get back to what it did best, even if it doesn’t do it as well as the first season. In all, this season was designed to develop the other heroes and making Myne the menace she was at the beginning of the series, all while building up the demihuman characters that are at the backbone of this season. What reallly brought down the second season was that it was being overly ambitious, something that’s not the case at all with this season as it was paced just right. So while the writing is better this season and the content gets back to being about the characters and building things towards something big like the first season did, this season just feels like a transitional one towards something big that will happen in the next season. Grade: B (8/10) |

So Raphtalia is a princess of sorts from a far-off country, and that miko outfit is similar to that country's royal robes. Since now there are people from Q'ten Lo after Raphtalia's life, Naofumi has to go there to make them understand that she doesn't want any part in royal affairs. However, it looks like Malty is already there digging her claws in herself. I was expecting this season to be as long as the first, but now we have no idea if more material will be adapted in the future. |

I'm afraid I never recovered from my problems with the slavery issues. I also didn't care for all of the repetitive Malty problems. I wish they'd get back to the plot. I'll give this season a 5/10, but I'm willing to watch another season if they can manage to get the plot moving again. |

The other heroes finally getting their act together should have happened last season before the overgrown Squirtle showed up. I like the idea of showing us something about the other heroes worlds. The bow guy coming from a world where people have powers is an interesting idea. An isekai where you have people coming not just from our world, but from others too, is something I can't recall seeing in other shows. Going into that more is something that could add an extra dimension to this show that it kind of needs. Having all the other heroes be such cardboard cutout idiots has really haunted this show. Raphtalia being in line for some foreign throne is one thing, but having it come around in the story because of some silly outfit that Naofumi has a fetish for was pretty silly. Could have found a better way to introduce that storyline. |
