With a new party member in Izutsumi, she's got to get along with the others now. After recovering their lost gear, the group deals with an ice golem. Then Marcille and Izutsumi get separated when some wolves chase them from some weird plants with flowers shaped like sheep. Marcille lectures Izutsumi about not being picky about food, but she needs to practice what she preaches, too.

Neat they added Itzumi to the OP and Ed, I would say Laios gets quite a view when they sleep but after seeing the whole ep I guess not. Itzumi is probably turning out to be the most cat-like catgirl in anime. And mmmm lamb chops :9

Episode 21

Back on the surface, Kabru reveals his background as his family was killed when a dungeon appeared in his homeland. So he wants to figure out a way to seal the dungeon seeing that those who die in the dungeon become monsters there. Back in the dungeon, the party is eating eggs and after their meal Laios sees a ghost that takes the party to the golden country where people live together with dungeon monsters. It turns out that the mage cast a curse of immortality on the villagers, all while a spell is cast on the monsters that make them non-aggressive. Laios and company were called because of the prophecy and Laios is the hero who will take down that mad mage to set everybody free. I have to think that the mag mage is the same guy as the dungeon master, but in any case the party has quite a lot to think about in light of all this.

The elves are pressuring the island lord to allow them to destroy the dungeon, but Kabru is worried about collateral damage, since his mother died as a consequence of the elves' actions when he was a child. Kabru manages to hash out an uneasy compromise for the time being, but the younger elves are clearly impatient as it is. Meanwhile, Laios's party gets called to a village by a ghost. There, they meet Yaad, grandson of King Delgal, the person who called for people on the surface to defeat the elf mage, and evidently Laios is the hero of a prophecy. This is quite a lot for Laios to take in.

Episode 22

While having a meal, the party learns about Thistle, and is warned that he doesn't listen to reason, but Laios insists that they need to speak. So it's back into the dungeon, and Senshi is kidnapped by a griffin. Marcille creates familiars from the ingredients to rescue Senshi, and uses it to locate Senshi, then lend him some rope and then weaken the griffin for Laios to finish off. Afterwards, they eat the familiars and cut up the griffin. Seeing that the party doesn't know much about Chilchuck and Senshi that they introduce each other. It turns out that Chilchuck is married with a family, but he hasn't seen them in quite some time, and Senshi used to mine before discovering this dungeon and has been stuck there ever since. Things are only getting more dangerous seeing that this party is committed to meeting up with the creator of the dungeon, but Thistle is not a guy who can be reasoned with so easily.

Yaad tells Laios's party about the dark elf mage, Thistle, before the group heads back into the dungeon. However, Senshi's soon kidnapped by a griffin, and Marcille creates some makeshift monsters from their ingredients to rescue him. After Senshi's rescued and the griffin is dispatched, Laios cooks the familiars Marcille made since they've served their purpose, and Senshi tells them that he was part of the mining team that discovered the dungeon in the first place.

I'm guessing Senshi's fear of the griffin is because his mining buddies got caught and killed by some, and he almost met the same fate. Poor Marcille was so distraught after seeing that the heroes of the day got eaten.

Episode 23

Senshi reveals his backstory about how he ended up in the dungeon as Senshi wanted to return to the surface to prepare for the dungeon, but his comrades refused and pressed on thinking that they can find their way out, and they couldn't. The party ran out of food, and that forced the dwarves to eat the monsters there to survive. And then the griffin wiped out most of the party before Gillin defeated it just before he perished. That's when Senshi learned the ins and outs of the dungeon and became well-versed about cooking dungeon monsters, but griffin soup left a bad taste in Senshi's mouth. Laios decides to make griffin soup himself and that got Senshi to realize that Gillin wanted him to survive. While they used the shrooms to tenderize the hippogriff meat, they step on it by accident that causes everybody to transform into different bodies. They try to find that ring of shrooms again, but the dungeon has changed. While they are trying to figure things out, they make hippogriff dumplings and feel more calm. Senshi sure has been through quite a lot. One more episode left this season, and it figures to carrie a second season announcement as this show will be through the halfway point in the manga.

For a moment there, I thought that the soup Gillin had Senshi eat was made from Brigan's flesh. It turns out the monster that killed Senshi's mining buddies was actually a hippogriff, which was changed into a griffin by some changeling mushrooms. Laios has the idea of using the mushrooms as a way to compare the difference between griffin and hippogriff meat, but when they set out again, they accidentally step on the mushrooms and their bodies morph into different races.

Apparently, the dungeon responds to travelers' desires, and while the group tries to find some changeling mushrooms to change back, they end up at the door they were originally headed for. The monster in Laios's sword manages to open the door, but some gargoyles show up and attack them. It gets awkward for everyone to fight the gargoyles, so they flee through the open door, after which they cook some dumplings to calm themselves down. But how are they going to get back to normal at this rate?

Heh the race swap is fun, Senshi as an elf is hilarious. Be funny if Marcille found him attractive.

Episode 24 (Season 1 Finale)

With the party members switching races, Marcille deduces that if they form a ring having been infected by the changeling sports that by having the gargoyles pass through them they transform. And that's exactly what happens as the gargoyles turn into lifeless statues. In the process, Kensuke has transformed into something more menacing. After that, they eat dumplings. Then the party continues on and everybody talks about what they want to do about Falin as Senshi equates her to bacon and eggs. In the end, they figure out that what they need to do is consume Falin's dragon parts, and before doing that they need to release the winged lion, defeat Thistle, and then gather people around to eat Falin's dragon parts. Pretty good place to stop, and Marcille's antics are really cute while she's in the body belonging to Chilchuck's race.

So with that, this show has reached the halfway point in the manga and to nobody's surprise, the story will continue on into a second season.

Final Thoughts

This show started out being something of a monster-of-the-week kind of thing and while it was amusing to watch, it felt kind of repetitive. But it's the second half when this show starts becoming great when the mood became more serious and the characters really broke out of their shells given the situation. The character development really takes off, all while the show's storytelling and drama greatly improved. And then there's Trigger doing what they are best known for as they were definitely the perfect match for this show. In all, the show was the complete full-course meal that I was hoping it would be.

Grade: A (9/10)

The gargoyles chase Laios's group, and during the next skirmish, Marcille finds out that by forming a ring with their bodies, anything passing through it changes form. In other words, Laios's group are essentially makeshift Changelings. After turning the gargoyles into harmless statues, they eat some dumplings and wash the Changeling spores off themselves, and soon the transformation wears off. Then the group takes a ride on a funicular, and after Senshi's compares Falin to bacon and eggs, Laios comes up with the idea of consuming the dragon part of Falin's body to turn her back into a human. But it's going to take a lot of people to hold a banquet big enough to consume a creature of that size.

Laios and his party have three things to do now. First, find and free the Winged Lion, a creature that Yaad described as the dungeon's guardian deity. Then, they have to defeat Thistle, and finally have the huge banquet to restore Falin's body to normal. Meanwhile, Kabru, Namari, and Shuro are returning to the dungeon with the elves close behind, and it looks like the dungeon itself has changed considerably. Things are about to get more complicated as the story continues on in the next season.

It's a little hard to rate a show like this when it is left on a cliff hangar. The story was good, but the whole cooking aspect made it feel like they weren't even taking the quest seriously

I'll give it a 7.5/10 with a round up to 8

I love how everything in this show has such a well thought out explanation. It's almost like the author had a read through with nerds before publishing to answer all of their "yeah but..." questions :) Overall the series has had it's ups and downs but it has still been highly enjoyable with consistently great art, music, acting/characters, etc. The food I think is just an excuse to explain all the ecology of the dungeon and monsters, etc. It's almost like Cells at work but not hitting you over the head with it. Looking forward to more.

Caught up and finished this yesterday. It was so entertaining that binging through it was just a breeze.
It wasn't perfect, and I would've preferred for at least one thing to be resolved before saving the rest for the 2nd season... but, since I managed to go back to it and effortlessly binge-watch about 8 episodes of it, I think that shows how entertaining it was.

I gave it a 9/10. It's possible that I'm giving it too much credit due to the other shows I'm watching being so lackluster but, I'm sure that it's at least an 8/10 for me.

The next season does seem interesting with it likely following 3 different groups of characters: The MCs, the group of Kabru, Namari, and Shiro with the Elves in tow, and "The Lunatic Magician" Thistle along with a now seemingly sane Falin.
Looking forward to it.
