I agree, it really was. There are so many. It's hard to list because some I feel are in somewhat different sub categories, such as Dark Dramatic or Dark Supernatural/Psychological.

I think those are really briliant anime.

-Shingetsutan tsukihime

A few nobody mentioned:

Kurozuka (need to watch til the end so it all makes sense... but well worth it... craaazy dark weird anime)
Shiki (nice vampire horror anime)
Mermaid Forest (name sounds cheesy but anime is very dark... last episode gave me chills!)
Bakemonogatari (ghosts and oddities, very beautifully drawn)

Kara no Kyoukai and Hellsing.

Kara no Kyoukai--serious, serious levels of scary and darkness and adult themes in regards to violence. The main heroine can wipe people's existences out with her eyes and knife alone, for crying out loud!

Hellsing--the embodiment of a vampire story that I like. ;)

My favorite at the moment is ....Rose of Versailles.

How exactly does a shoujo set in a French palace count as dark? Simple. For the most part, nobody wins in this anime. Protagonists and atagonists alike are plunged into despair on a regular basis.

There are also many moments that are shocking enough for it to qualify as being dark. For example (SPOILERS)

Yep, Rose of Versailles is a dark series, despite first impressions indicating otherwise, well, apart from the OP, which features suitably dark symbolism.

My other favorites include Serial Experiments Lain, Angel's Egg, Mononoke and Kaiji

Berserk, Gungrave, Ergo Proxy, Elfen Lied, Darker than Black, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, Hellsing are all definitely pretty dark though some are more than the others.

Two uncommon ones; Hundred Stories(Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari) and Denpa teki na kanojo are pretty dark too.

Need to watch Texhnolyze though, heard its pretty damn dark :)

If Mononoke is dark - it's creepy, sure, but dark? And Ergo Proxy is first and foremost sad... Nekojiru-sou is just pure madness.

I don't know a single creepy anime. Maybe it's the fact that it's just drawn, but every "creepy" anime I watched, turned out to be ridiculous instead. Like Monster or Narutaru.

Shiki was a great dark type anime, though. My favorite!
Highschool of the Dead was great, too. Only the fan service ruined it for me. And seriously, zombies aren't creepy.
Welcome to the NHK had a dark atmosphere, too. I enjoyed it.
And Lain is soooo damn boring. It starts really great. And there are some interesting subjects. The story is good too. But that computer stuff doesn't turn me on.
And I heard Jigoku Shoujo was good. But I think it's not mysterious enough. You get to know the Hell Girl and that kinda ruins it for me. And every episode I've seen turns out the same, no connections to the previous. I don't like that.
And Death Note is the best anime ever, but the childish stuff sucks. Like Near or L. Sweets and toys. Seriously, that's just retarded. And I don't think it's really dark. Blood and killing and gore and stuff don't necessarily make it dark. I think it's more about the ambience.
Shinigami no Ballad was great too. It's not that dark, but kinda depressive.
Same with Shuffle, but it's too cheerful by being a typical harem, with too many pointless elements.
Oh yeah, and I've only seen 1 or 2 episodes, but Mermaid Forest seemed great. Yet that fantasy stuff doesn't really appeal to me.
And Video Girl Ai also is kind of dark. But the anime really sucks, too short and stuff. Read the manga, it's great stuff.

But everyone has different opinions.

I just want to see one really really creepy anime! No damn clichées and stuff. Not the typical cute anime shit, like Higurashi had. It was a good show though. I want something really dark, without just gore and blood and bullshit. Something that doesn't turn out as you expect it to, after 3 episodes.
Anyone know the DS game "9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors"? DAMN, that would be an awesome dark anime!

Have you ever watched Perfect Blue? It is a movie from Satoshi Kon, the guy who made Paranoia Agent. It might be something like what you are searching for. All of his movies are great and don't really have the typical anime stereotype characters.

Also if you can manage to watch School Days all the way through then you might like it.

Gantz, Berserk ( Flint-hearted and ruthless with more gore than you could ask for )

Other seen titles worth mentioning: Ergo proxy, Psycho-pass, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, Claymore. They're all close, but they don't quite reach the same level of "darkness" imo.

Favorite Dark themed manga:
Blame! ( I've never felt so cold and phase shifted with life and reality after reading a Manga, it's atmosphere literally sent my soul drifting. )
