| I'm looking for something that's got a more mature theme to it. By mature, I'm not talking about loads of sex and violence (although, if you have any suggestions that contain either of those elements, don't hesitate to post them). I'm not really sure how to explain exactly what I'm looking for, but they should have a rather mysterious, dark plot to them. - Kara no Kyoukai - Monster - Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen - Kimi ga Nozomu Eien - Lain All five of these have a certain feel to them that I quite like. . As I said before, any gore or sexual themes are fine (All five of the animes I listed contain at least one of the two), but they need to have the same kind of feel as the ones I listed. |

| I will recommend Berserk and Blue Gender. Berserk - Pretty much THE definition of epic. Its dark, mature, and amazing. Blue Gender- It is, in my opinion, a very underrated anime. I would definitely recommend this if you are looking for something that is dark and mature. One of my favorite anime ever. |
| Ergo Proxy Shigurui Jin-Roh Aoi Bungaku All of the above were certainly created for a more mature audience, and have a dark atmosphere. I would also possibly suggest Witch Hunter Robin, because while it can also appeal to a younger audience I think it may have the appropriate atmosphere. It starts off a bit slow, but is a rewarding watch once it picks up. |
| Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a must-see science fiction. Koi Kaze also comes to mind. Its story revolves around a doomed, incestuous romance. Not for everyone, though! I noticed that others have recommended Shigurui. It's a very dark and serious samurai anime, but I can't say I particularly enjoyed it. Feel free to check my list for more ideas. |

Kure-nai Genshiken, maybe Haibane Renmei The Legend of Black Heaven Planetes Samurai Champloo, maybe Natsume Yuujinchou Nodame Cantabile, maybe I assumed you were looking for serious anime centered on adults or mature teens, the ones marked maybe are comedy, slice of life and/or action centered on adults. I'd start with Natsume Yuujinchou, Welcome to the NHK! or Haibane Renmei. |

| Ergo Proxy (a very dark, dystopic setting and a theme which couples science fiction with philosophy, lots of references to famous philosophers and their works) Boogiepop Phantom (Made by those who made Serial Experiments Lain. This anime is the darkest one I've seen so far. It's grim and gloomy all the way through, merciless to its characters and keeps its secrets hidden to the very end.) Those two match perfectly the description of what you're asking for here, try them out! :) |
