Plot Summary

Despite being adjacent to one another, Chidori Public High School and the all-girls Kikyo Private Academy seem to exist in two different worlds. While the latter boasts an immaculate reputation and favors students from wealthy backgrounds, the former is a nest for dim-witted delinquents. Everyone at Kikyo harbors a deep hatred for their Chidori neighbors.

Sixteen-year-old Rintarou Tsumugi is a student at Chidori whose intimidating face leads people to avoid him. Rintarou pays no mind to this, as he is content with his group of friends. However, there is something he has not told them yet: sometimes, he helps out at his family's cake shop.

One day at work, Rintarou sees a customer at a table, but she runs off before he can talk to her. The next day, he receives an apology from the girl, Kaoruko Waguri, who explains that she did not run away because of his appearance and that she believes Rintarou is a kind-hearted person. Although he is not used to Kaoruko's bright personality, Rintarou looks forward to forming a friendship with her. There is just one obstacle that stands in his way: Kaoruko is a Kikyo student!

@MatTheShark WTF, this is a Cloverworks show, HOW TF does Crunchyroll not have it? Sony is so stupid with their different divisions.

The manga this show is adapted from is absolutely amazing from what I'm hearing. Here is a different kind of Romeo and Juliet kind of setting. Anyway, I'm quite shocked that Crunchyroll doesn't have this seeing that Aniplex is quite territorial with their shows as they almost never let an outsider grab their shows being owned by Sony and all. But of course money talks, and Netflix probably gave Aniplex a big payday to get it. And not only did Netflix get it, we got to wait two months to watch this. I'll at least check the first episode on the dark side, but given how crowded the season already is that I'll wait until September to watch the whole thing.

@HOOfan_1 Money. It's the only explanation anybody can think of. Netflix probably offered Aniplex/Sony so much money that they couldn't say no to it. Aniplex is aware of Netflix's full season drop strategies and how it can potentially hurt it's exposure but my guess is that the big money Netflix is paying them will offset the potential losses.

@paulchaested Imagine if Microsoft offered $2 billion to make the next God of War game an Xbox exclusive though, Sony would laugh in their face.

I wasn't blown away by the first episode, but it was fine. Seems weird having a very exclusive Rich Girl private School right next to an All Boys Public school...but I guess....plot.

Also, what kind of guy would just hall off an punch a tiny little girl unprovoked? Hopefully they face more consequences than just getting scared by a big softie.

Was the woman running the cake shop his mom, or his older sister? She's the one who interests me the most in this show.

I'll probably check out one more episode before waiting until the September 7 release on Netflix, and word just got out that it will start out with episode 1, releasing weekly which was expected seeing that the TV broadcast will still be ongoing come September 7.

Episode 1

And here is a much more lighthearted version of Romeo and Juliet as the delinquents of Chidori Public School and the ojousamas from Kikyo don't see eye-to-eye with each other given that they are on extreme opposite ends of the spectrum. But that's about to be put to the test in a big way after Rintaro's encounter with Kaoruko seeing that this girl is a frequent customer as Rintaro's family bakery, and they fall in love with each other not realizing where they go to school. A great start here, and seeing that this is being adapted from an award-winning manga that there's plenty to look forward to. But the wait will be longer than expected thanks to Netflix not only throwing so much money at Aniplex that not even they cannot refuse, but to go back to their old ways of throwing their shows behind jail.

It was pretty good. it is, to be fair, quite a typical romance story that started quite too quick and conveniently, but at least there's quality in execution.

I'm already expecting the bakery, and may be Waguri again, being messed with by people targeting Rintarou. Dude better learn to be rightfully angry when that happens.

My favorite part is when they just casually let go of those two bastards that clearly had harmful intent, and likely to attempt again as well, especially with them knowing where the bakery is (Sarcastically speaking). Sure do hope at least Waguri reported them! :D

White/Silver = Russian.
Blonde = American (Provided that have large breasts or blue eyes)
Brown/Black/Red/Pink/Blue/Green = Japanese.

Blonde can also be German.
Japan back in the day loved adding German characters.

Alright, the romance between the 2 MCs is working for me; they have pretty good chemistry.

Although, I don't think I can ever take the hurdle between the two of them- the issue regarding their respective school's disdain for the other- seriously. Pretty sure it's just my age showing but, it just screams 'teenage stuff' where they exaggerate and/or live by their school's reputations-- I get it but not a fan of it.
But I do appreciate it when they tackle it from the perspective of an adult, like when Rintarou and his mom was discussing it.

Speaking of Rintarou's mom... THAT WAS HIS MOM???!!! I thought she was his sister! :O Best literal 'Waifu' of the season! xD

So far I find the show to be a run of the mill romance show. Decent, but nothing mind blowing as people seem to have been making it out to be.

Then again, somehow Solo Leveling is possibly the most hyped show since Attack on Titan and it is the most generic, trope filled shonen type show I have ever seen.

So what's the over under on Hoshina actually being a boy?

There's no way you would have a boy's school and a girl's school directly next to each other without at least a few teen pregnancies per semester.

Finally watched the first episode and it was pretty boring. The tropes are layered on thick and there was nothing all that interesting. I'll probably check out another ep or two. It just looks like another overhyped, overrated, romance so far though. We've been getting a lot of those lately.

Episode 2.
OK, now I know what this show is. It's the overly earnest, super trope heavy, generic romance show/movie that you occasionally see people watching in other anime shows. Why this is so popular I have no idea. And how would he not walk her to the station after what happened before?

Episode 3 + 4.
The stuff with Rentaro and his friends was the most engaging part of the show so far. How good can a romance be when the show gets better when it's not focused on the romance stuff? I also think I'd be way more interested in watching a relationship between silver hair girl and the one smart boy in the group. Seems like she's in love with Waguri though.

I was thinking the mom got her hair dyed after he did, but turns out she did it to let him know it was okay. It kind of made no sense for him to do something to make him even scarier, but I guess he gave up hope of having friends anyway. Not sure why he was considered scary before the "yankee" makeover though.

Now that it's on Netflix, I can watch it. So I've seen the first two, and like it so far but I'm always down for a bit of Romeo and Juliet. Although, as someone mentioned above, it's actually reminding me more of My Love Story, but not as funny. Nonetheless, I like it. Not sure I should participating in this group though, if you guys are way ahead.

Episode 3

Here comes Subaru, who is Kaoruko's childhood friend and unlike with her, has a personal grudge against Chidori. With exams coming up and Rintaro has been struggling with his academics that the boys decide to hold a study session inside the public library with Saku and Ayato. It just so happens that Subaru and Kaoruko have a study group of their own as Kaoruko is a genius who cares a lot about her grades, more so than Rintaro. Subaru acts hostile towards the boys even though Kaoruko insists that there's no problem. Everybody realizes that what they knew about each other was wrong, and while Subaru came across as hostile, she's actually quite caring, all while Subaru is not exactly in the right of mind to think that all men are brutes. In any case, there's a lot that will need to be sorted out as it's not so easy for Subaru to change her mind about something once it's made up.

Predictable but enjoyable so far. The art and animation style reminds me a bit of Akebi's Sailor Uniform, with a touch of Skip and Loafer.

Rintaro's friends going nuts celebrating that Rintaro "DID NOT FAIL!" while his teacher literally sobs with pride was the best part of the episode.

So Subaru is not exactly good with men, which is why she asked Rintaro to stay away. Of course, that's not really up to him to decide seeing that it's all about what Kaoruko wants to do. In any case, that was some productive studying they did as they all passed.

Episode 5

That note there at the end is stirring up trouble at Chidori, and Rintaro finds himself in no-man's land there, and Kaoruko is the only one who can bring him out of that place. And then Rintaro is left alone by his mother when Kaoruko visits the shop. There's a lot that needs to be sorted out as Rintaro's feelings are a mess, but for now he's celebrating the passing of his exam, which is not great, but at least much better than how he has typically done on exams. And then it ends with another troubling development as Subaru tells Kaoruko that she talked with Rintaro, and of course doesn't think nearly as highly about him.

Yeah, this ended up being a run of the mill, non-comedic romance. It was good, but nothing ground breaking at all.

The idea that an exclusive rich girl's school would be right next to a kind of slummy boy's school is pretty far fetched. I feel that entire aspect was unneeded.

Final episode was basically Waguri's perspective on the first few episodes, with a little bit of added backstory.

The whole show has been a bit too cheesy for me for the most part, but some of the sweet moments did work on me. I preferred the the parts where they dealt with the emotional situations, like regarding Rintaro's struggles growing up and how his mom helped him through it, and Subaru's overprotectiveness for Waguri.
My least favorites were the drama within Rintarou's friend circle, and Subaru's worry about being a nuisance to their newly built group of friends. I don't feel like those parts where handled quite well.
Rintarou's mom (Kyouko), Usami, and early episodes Subaru were the ones I really appreciated from the show.

7/10. The aesthetics quality really gave this a huge boost, with it having the 'romantic' and 'beautiful' ambiance on-point. But story wise, it's just the usual fantasized romance, where every moment is presented to feel so special and sweet, with every obstacle being overcame easily.
I don't really feel that Rintarou's struggles with being treated like a punk has ever been a factor in the relationship-building of him and Waguri. It didn't help that he kept making it about the Chidori/Kikyo schools, and barely about his misconceived personality possibly affecting Waguri-- a scholar (Subaru seems to be the only one who worried about that very important part). And with Waguri revealing that she already liked him waaay before learning about the school stuff, that aspect of the story became pretty much irrelevant.
And when it comes to Subaru's 2nd conflict, It would've made sense to add if the show had a 2-cour run. Having that in the last few episodes of the series feels like a last ditch to push her ship with Natsusawa, and to promote merch solidify her presence in the series before it ends (which doesn't make sense because she had lots of screentime and 'waifu' power level :P)

Episode 6

And here, misunderstandings get cleared up as whether Kaoruko sees Rintaro is a decision she has to make for herself, and not for Subaru to make for her. Realizing the mistake she made due to the prejudice of Chidori students, Subaru speaks with Kaoruko and Rintaro personally. Subaru and Kaoroku reassure their friendship no matter what happens so that Kaoruko can feel relaxed. And then the next day, Rintaro and Subaru become friends, which is quite a big development seeing that Subaru hasn't exactly had a great impression of boys. This goes to show that all it takes is to kick generic labels to the curb, and things will improve tenfold.

Episode 7

While Rintaro cleared the air with Subaru, now he needs to do the same with his fellow Chidori classmates as Shohei, Saku, and Ayato are quite wary about Rintaro since he was acting suspiciously lately, and they tail him to see that he had been secretly meeting up with Kaoruko and Subaru. Of course, Rintaro had planned to tell them eventually, but that process just accelerated with those boys demanding Rintaro to explain himself. And Ayato ought to know better than to touch a girl's hair without her permission. But things are quickly cleared up realizing that Rintaro is simply seeing them as friends and not Kikyo students. Then comes the sports festival as Rintaro leads the class to victory, something that wouldn't have been possible if they hadn't hit the books.

Episode 8

The sports festival came and went, and now Rintaro formally introduces Kaoruko and Subaru as his friends to the other boys. Everybody reconciles with each other and now they just about put all this nonsensical BS about Chidori and Kikyo being like oil and water to rest. After that, Rintaro and Kaoruko go on a date to the aquarium and enjoy themselves. But right before the dolphin show that they were so looking for, they find a lost child. It's a good thing there was another show coming in the evening that made the decision to get her back with her parents the right thing to do. So with enjoy themselves there, and that's when Rintaro realizes he's in love with Kaoruko. Now that the excuse that is being a student from two schools that don't like each other has been removed, it's full speed ahead to letting their true feelings be known.
