Episode 1 While I'm pretty wary of shows with Chinese origins, it's pretty clear this one was given the royal treatment seeing that Aniplex and Crunchyroll helped make this show possible, and heck it's even given One Piece's old timeslot. While it's part of the same franchise as To Be Hero and To Be Heroine, those shows are unrelated to this one. And thus, it begins with Lin Ling, an aspiring hero, ordered to impersonate Nice after he had gone missing. He was nearly tripped up by the lie detector test there seeing that Moon is supposed to be Nice's girlfriend, but either he lies and get caught or outs the truth that he's not really Nice. But he came up with a third option in that Moon is not his girlfriend, but his goddess and idol. That was an answer that was true and agreeable. And then the Boss attacks, but Lin Ling shows that he could be an even greater hero than Nice there. And then it's off to his new home, but there's a dead lady in. Quite a lot of intrigue here to start things off going to show that the real Nice had a pretty shady life, and the replacement Nice is out to really be a true hero. In any way, a very Nice start here, pun intended. |

It's interesting that people in this world can be transformed into superheroes by public adulation. That kind of thing could result in some deep storylines. I'm not completely drawn in, though. I'll give it a couple more episodes to give me an idea of where things are heading. |

Wow, that was really good. Easily the best premier I've seen so far this season. I couldn't help but think while I was watching it that this is the kind of show/story that something like Solo Leveling wishes it was. It's definitely using that Arcane art style. I'm mostly neutral on the style itself, but I do like that they're doing something different instead of the style you normally see used when a show uses CG. |

Episode 2 As it turns out, seeing Moon murdered was just a dream. or something, but it didn't really happen. As for what happened with the real Nice, he committed suicide, and Lin Ling ended up becoming his replacement because Nice is being treated as a brand and not a person. And now, the two are being forced to get married with the sponsors even going as far as locking the two in their apartment until they say yes. One month later, the two finally agree to get married, at least in the public eye, but then Nice's nemesis Wreck attacks. As it turns out, this was staged as Lin Ling's plan is to fake Moon's death and for that Wreck, who was the real Nice's best friend, was called upon to crash the wedding. It looked like Wreck was pretty serious about killing those two as he knew right away that this Nice was a fake since the real one stopped replaying to his messages. But in the end, the plan worked and Moon is now free to do whatever she wants. As for the replacement Nice, he's now on the Top 10 list of heroes. This definitely feels like Tiger and Bunny as Moon's life is like what Mr. Legend went through with the stress of not only fighting villains, but appealing to the public as well. Great stuff once again, and I'm amazed at the number of animation styles that were pulled off in this episode going to show that this show is working with a big budget. |

Just watched the first episode and, HORI SHIDO!!! That was freakin good! It's almost felt like I was watching a movie. Natsuki Hanae's voice greatly works with Nice. I also like the energy of the Manager (Stern Dommie Mommie is really a weakness of mine. xD I was avoiding this because I'm worried that it's one of those AI made Anime. I'm still not really sure if it is or not but, if it's good, it's good. (I think I just spoiled myself by looking at the character section of this Anime on MAL; that's the second time this happened this month xP) |

Episode 3 After helping out a heroine in distress, now the replacement Nice helping out another as Firm Man is a Top 10 hero, but he's suffering from burnout as he's trying to maintain his philosophy of standing firm, and he's starting to feel that he can't do it anymore. To do that, Nice needs to defeat Firm Man's nemesis Wolf Girl, who is so smart and secretive that reaching her is half the battle. But as it turns out, Wolf Girl is somebody who Firm Man once rescued, and Wolf Girl doesn't like the man he has become. So she orchestrated these events near the statue and she puts Firm Man in a position to choose between saving a person in danger and saving a statue. In the end, the operation goes wrong with the statue about to crush Wolf Girl, but Nice comes in to save the day. So with that, Nice is in the Top 10, while Firm Man gets to live out a happy retirement. Just when things were all well and good, the Enlighter caught wind of this whole scheme with Moon and has kidnapped her, threatening to out all the secrets. That was a great way to help out a fellow hero, and while being a hero is one thing, having to maintain one's image is something completely different. Let's see how Nice and company deal with Enlighter in light of this. |

Giving people power or taking it away via social media is an interesting idea, and I'm enjoying the Arcane styling. Thought I recognized a couple of Jinx's stuffies in Wolf Girl's den there. I was waiting for a deeply tragic ending to this episode, but was pleasantly surprised. Firm Man must be happy that he can finally sit on a toilet again... |

This has my favourite ED so far this season. I wonder why they translated "Mr. Standing" to "Firm Man"? I assume the Japanese studio had something to do with it. That's usually where such strange decisions originate. |

Episode 4 Thanks to Enlighter, who now goes by God Eye as his professional name, Lin Ling ended up having to spill the beans about this scheme to the public. However, the public backed him in the end as Lin Ling admits to just being a commoner roped into this scheme, but his commitment to justice is genuine. And as such, his reputation increases and he overpowers God Eye in the end. As it turns out, Moon was actually a mannequin, while the real one is lost in paradise as she forgot her teleportation gun and regrets not bringing it with her. But Lin Ling fixes that. However, that didn't last long as somebody followed him and killed the real Moon. This is cruel business here and this episode goes to show just that. |

Episode 5 And now, there's a new MC as this time it's E-Soul's turn in the spotlight. He's a struggling stage actor who has been doing those fake stage shows that has one kid skeptical about the show, but is a believer in his talent. He's in love with Xia Qing and wants to go to a Lucky Cyan (who is one of the top 10 heroes) concert with her, but she had the same idea and he decides to skip it altogether. And then E-Soul's life comes crashing down as his trust is a giant goose egg and that has him pretty much down and out as a hero without any future prospects. But that all changes when that kid is kidnapped, and E-Soul manages to stop those kidnappers, but gets beaten to a pulp until the kid shouts his encouragement. And just like that, Yang Cheng now has attention. It will be interesting to see where this goes, but in any case, it looks like all 10 heroes are going to get a segment about themselves. |

Episode 6 Just like with Nice's story, this E-Soul is replacing somebody else and unlike with Nice, the original E-Soul is alive. But what this E-Soul lacks in power, he makes up for it with guts and conviction. He has been gaining quite a lot of popularity, but the original E-Soul threatens to tank his support by framing him for Pomelo's kidnapping. But Chao comes through, all while Enlighter, unlike with his case with Nice, comes in to help clear the air. Just when things were looking up, Chao is shot by an assailant who thinks he's the new E-Soul. And once again, this goes to show that just when something good happens, somebody gets killed. |

Episode 7 The mood sure did change quickly here with Shang Chao's murder, and E-Soul is determined to bring the killer to justice by himself as he knows who did it. It's one of those two guys who kidnapped Pomelo. They should be in jail, but they were released and the mastermind behind this is none other than Uncle Rock, who once ran a cafe that E-Soul once worked at. Uncle Rock blackmailed the killer to assassinate the new E-Soul or else he and his brother would get killed, and after killing the wrong guy they were given a cruel death by being dipped in cement, then crushed by old E-Soul. And then the battle between the two E-Souls begins as while the old E-Soul has an overwhelming advantage in power and equipment, the new E-Soul has the advantage in popularity. The mood of this episode is really something as the new E-Soul showed the old one that he's a lot more than he will ever be. |

Episode 8 It's onto the next hero in Lucky Cyan, a popular idol that E-Soul is a fan of. Her background is explained, and to sum things up she's got way too much luck on her side to the point where it has become a curse. She was the only survivor of that plane crash, and after Liu found and adopted her, she would grow up in a Christian orphanage. She has been making a living thanks to her extreme luck to the point where she's being exploited and she's getting sick of it, and just wants to become ordinary. So when she decides to become a hero, she plots her escape with the help of her best friend as during a service, she would put on a performance, and then skate out of the orphanage. However, the director has other plans. Cyan is full of mysteries seeing that from the look of things the plane crash was no accident. Cyan's arc will last three episodes just like with E-Soul's. |

Episode 9 That orphanage director is such a scumbag and it's a great thing Cyan got away, but her friend Luo had to stay behind to make sure she got away having been aided by another lucky break when the delivery truck driver was asleep at the wheel and crashed through the walls. But with Cyan now with no place to go she sings on the streets at a shopping arcade, and her songs attracted a lot of attention to the point where her trust value skyrocketed. As such, she became an idol and a hero having been recruited by Ken to go big. And she gained instant popularity. As for those kids left behind at the orphanage, they are transforming into zombies as the director had been running this orphanage for his own personal scheme, and now it's about to be realized. Let's see how Cyan's arc ends as given how everybody so far had somebody close to them get killed, death flags are all over Cyan's friend who helped her get away. |

Episode 10 And the truth about Cyan's luck is revealed, but before that she has to navigate through an attempt to sabotage her trust by the orphanage's director after he turned everybody into zombies, and blamed Cyan's luck as something coming at the misfortune of others. But there was somebody who had the truth about what really happened during that doomed flight that proves otherwise. And then Cyan faces off against Luo, who had been fed a lie by the director about Cyan being the one to blame for everything that happened. But Cyan managed to get the truth to go public after breaking into the orphanage and using the sprinklers to turn Luo back to himself again. It turns out that Cyan's god-tier luck was the result of everybody's blessings as they willingly gave their luck to her hoping that somebody would survive this tragedy. So with the truth out, Cyan is now a ranked hero as her story end. It will be Queen's turn next. |

Episode 11 Next up is Queen for two episodes, and she's the second-ranked hero. She has it all as she's a genius who graduated from college at age 14 and gave the valedictorian speech letting everybody know that she was one of several women who became heroes thanks to Bowa, the first ever lady to acquire the title of X. Queen is hoping to become X to reform the hero system that has become corrupted, and trains hard to be a perfectionist. But when Queen challenges the nameless hero and current holder of X, she gets utterly destroyed. Queen sure has it all, but she's clearly lacking something as X is on a whole different level. It's clear that Queen and Bowa are not on good terms as Queen would like nothing more than to pound Bowa into submission to be X, but that's not happening with the unnamed hero standing in her way. |

I think this show could have been better if the stories had been more interwoven from the start. The first arc with Nice was really good, but the next one had issues and really killed the momentum. I still don't understand parts of that second arc. The Lucky Cyan part was better, but it's still been kind of a let down since that first arc ended. |

Episode 12 Queen's story wraps up with a big battle between her and Bowa as the two are polar opposites of each other and Bowa is none too pleased that she had to work for everything while Queen was apparently given everything to her. At the next hero ranking tournament, Bowa decides to take out her anger on Queen before her match against X, and that was one crazy battle there. In the end, Queen emerged victorious, but was so badly injured that she didn't wake up from it for several days that forced her to forfeit. So she will have to wait another two years, but at least she realizes what the most important thing is, and she has some great friends supporting her in Cyan, Johnny, and his cat. Hopefully, she can use these lessons to be a true hero and not egomaniac she was previously. Next up, it will be Loli for two episodes. |

My mid-series score: 6/10. I love the science fiction concept of the show. The action is great, and the animation styles (plural) work very well. Then there are the glaring plot holes. I have to say that the writing is poor because even if the plot holes get filled in eventually, it's taking far too long. the show leaves us hanging on too many things, and leaves situations vague. There are some aspects of the show that make me want to rank it higher, and I think it could have a very good story to tell, but I don't know that it's going to get there. |

Episode 13 Next hero is Loli, and just like with Cyan, she's cute. And that's exactly the problem here as Loli is sick and tired of being seen that way. She's the daughter of a engineering genius and as such she inherited his smarts, using that to create a completely new persona without having to cut her hair that she loves so much. So she creates a suit of armor with a bunny helmet that allows her to be a hero. She saves the receptionist of her father's company when she was being stalked, and after losing her helmet in the fight, there were concerns about her viability of being a hero. But she's sticking to her conviction no matter what and is becoming a hero in order to show that she's not weak as being cute is typically associated with. |

This show is just getting in it's own way. At this point I'm not even sure if there even is an overarching story here or if it's just an anthology series. If it is then it's an even bigger disappointment than I thought it would be. If Loli wants to be perceived as powerful while still being cute she should go with a magical girl persona. So the stalker must either be the childhood friend or Loli's dad since those are the only two male characters and they both know the two girls and I just realized who the stalker probably is. Anyway, I liked the start of the episode but then it got kind of boring about halfway through. Hopefully the rest of this arc will be better. |

Episode 14 This episode goes to show what Fear can do, and by Fear, that's the name given to the particles of negative energy that are being experimented with. But DJ is out to steal it for evil purposes, and Nuonuo goes in drunk to confront the one she thinks is her stalker. And then Loli dons her armor to fight DJ that causes Fear to break out and turn people into zombies. And then Ghostblade arrives to contain the outbreak, but DJ ends up escaping and overwhelms Loli. While Loli is also exposed to Fear, her armor makes her immune from both Trust and Fear, thus leading to an investigation. This episode was less about Loli and more about Fear as that's what powers it. Next up is Ghostblade, and based on what I'm hearing his story is the best of the heroes in this show. |

Episode 15 Next hero is Ghostblade, and his story is happening at the same time as Loli's as it turns out that he's the stalker that chased after Loli and Nuonuo as he is revealed to be Nuonuo's father. He has a dark past as he grew up as the son of a butcher and suffers from antisocial personality disorder, and used that to become an assassin. But he gained Trust because of his mute demeanor that is seen as cool. Everything changed when he saved a girl, Zhang Lan, who ended up becoming his wife and the two became parents to Nuonuo. But things fell apart when he refused to quit his hero gig to focus on being a father and that led to a divorce and Nuonuo being under Zhang's custody. Ghostblade has since been "stalking" Nuonuo and Loli has since become Nuonuo's bodyguard. But he now has a job that will get him involved with Nuonuo again with the accident at the Glimmer Lab. Quite an interesting story that was as Ghostblade is the dark hero in this show, somebody whose mental health is causing him all these problems for him and his family. |

Episode 16 Loli figures out that Ghostblade is the stalker just as the guys head out to the UFO crash site, and it was only after a Fear-induced madman attacks them that Nuonuo learns that Ghostblade is her father that is supposedly dead. Ghostblade ends up becoming infected with this, and all of the sudden the Johnnies disappear after the little one reveals that he's an orphan. While that's going on, Cyan and Queen are going on a vacation together. So after a relatively silly character arc in Loli, things got serious all of the sudden with Ghostblade not only being a dark hero who is trying to fight fear, but with the Johnnies disappearing like that. Next up, it's The Johnnies for three episodes. |

Episode 17 To start off Johnny's story, his history is explained as he grew up in the countryside, and a UFO crashed near their home where he would befriend an alien he would name Big Johnny, where he would end up saving him from being experimented on. His mother would then pass away from a terminal illness later, and then his father Sheng would then retire as a hero living a quiet life. But then everything changed when his father was murdered and assumes that it was the doing of Sheng's old colleague Vortex, who was trying to get him to unretire. That sent Johnny over the edge as he would tansform into a giant monster, all while the true killer is revealed to be Ghostblade. Pretty interesting setup here as Johnny is rather free-spirited, but everything changes when a loved one is killed the way it happened, and now it is his job to do something about it, and becoming a hero is part of it. |

Episode 18 Vortex, who was the top hero at the time, didn't stand a chance against Big J. But because Lil' J had formed a bond with the alien that he stopped her and as a 9-year-old he became a hero signing a contract with FOMO. But everything changed when Vortex died in the plane crash in which Cyan was the only survivor, and from there Johnny just wasted away his days. That is, until a UFO crash-landed and he was assigned to take on the mission to observe the crash site with Ghostblade, and that brings things to where Loli and Ghostblade had their stories meet. Of course, neither Johnny nor Loli knew the real reason why Ghostblade was being a stalker. And then Ghostblade gets led into a place where he finds himself in his childhood, at least in his mind, all while Mickey, the CEO of DOS who works for Queen's father, is looking to use Fear in order to profit from it. It's hard to figure out where Johnny's mind is seeing that so much has happened around him, all while in the shadows Mickey is about to wreak havoc. |

Episode 19 It turns out that Ghostblade was given a mission by Rock to kill Lil' J and bring Big J to him as there's quite a lot of tension at the UFO crash site. And then the two are attacked by E-Soul, who was also sent by Rock, and it turns out that Sheng illegally creating life was just a hoax and that there was a bigger reason why he was assassinated. While that's going on, Nuonuo and Loli's father run into the original Nice before he's stopped by Loli. So that ends Johnny's story, but the clash at the crash site continues as the featured hero for the next episode has yet to be revealed. |

Episode 20 That felt like the end of the season there with that all-out brawl between different factions there as this fight blurred the line between hero and villain in a big way, starting with the fact that original Nice's heroic image was merely a facade with his sponsor using Fear to warp public perception. The original Nice and E-Soul arrived to create havoc in order to make use of Fear. Big J transforms into his monstrous self and threatened to kill everybody until Queen and Cyan arrive to save the day, while Loli's suit was shattered with her father killed, Ghostblade quitting the hero business, and X being the defending hero for the third straight tournament by default. And thus, all this leads to the present, and the animation style change reflects that. There are still four more episodes left with Dragon Boy being the featured hero next. |

Episode 21 After all that chaos, it's onto the next hero, Dragon Boy, whose story happens after everybody's story except for Nice as he meets the original Nice rather than his replacement. He's somebody who is none too pleased about the world's injustice and is working with Rock to become a god, or at least as close to it as humanly possible like the GOAT, Zero. Before that, he needs to crack the top ten, and he takes out a past-his-prime Smile, who is the former top hero. While that's going on, Smile is warning X that the Hero Affairs Commission is targeting him. And then Dragon Boy tries to make a deal to get Smile's spot in the top ten, but of course that's something that must be earned and then the original Nice comes in to try and take both guys out. Once again, this goes to show just how distrustful Trust really is in the grand scheme of things, and Dragon Boy is looking to shake things up in light of everything. |

Episode 22 And this was just a battle with all sorts of twists and turns, all while X had to come in and clean up the mess. Dragon Boy tries to take out Smile, while Nice secretly plots to turn one of them into a villain, at first intending to make Dragon Boy that guy not realizing his power reflects damage to the user that causes Smile to get infected by Fear. In the end, Dragon Boy ends up killing Smile, while Nice retaliates, and theen X steps in to break up the fight as it appears X is connected to Smile as Rock would figure out. Dragon Boy tried to be a god, but X is closer to than Dragon Boy ever will. With that, onto the second-to-last hero and episode as the dog Ahu is up next. |

Episode 23 This episode is all about an escaped circus dog in Ahu as one of his fans, Xin Ya, adopted him and is instead made a hero by his caretaker hoping to get revenge on Treeman, who is trying to take away her community's land. However, Treeman gets quite devious there as he sends thugs to scam people out of their land, all while using Nice to do their dirty work. So Ahu and Xin Ya sneak into their hideout, but they get caught by the same guys who killed the UFO research team. It's a good thing X came in to bail them out, while Ahu taps into his old tricks to save the day. In the end, Nice is infected by Fear, which explains why he would go on to commit suicide at the start of the series as he was so badly infected by Fear that he didn't want it to spread, and not to mention Shand would go onto kick him to the curb. X is just a normal office worker working for FOMO who stays out of the public limelight. But his identity was exposed by Rock, and now X will have to fight his way through everything. As it turns out, he aims to become the new Zero, but the original Zero is still around in hiding. And thus, the show ends with all the heroes gathering for the 20th Heroes Tournament (technically 21st since the 20th tournament was cancelled) as X reveals that everything that happened was all fated to happen and that he is the chessmaster behind all this. So with that, the story ends with the backgrounds of the Top 10 heroes being explained as everybody went through quite a lot to get to this point. Final Thoughts This show was given a big budget, and it used it quite well and what stands out most about this show is the seamless integration of several different animation styles to tell the stories and let the viewers know when the stories are all taking place. The soundtrack and does a nice job at illustrating the show's mood as well, while the action was well-choreographed. For the most part, the story was well written in spite of the challenge of having to tell 10 different stories and tying them all together, which it had problems doing at times, but overall, it got its point across. Some stories are well-written like Lucky Cyan, Ghostblade, and Ahu, while some were not so much like with Queen and Loli. And another problem that was more of a by-product of the show's structure is the cohesion as some things just didn't connect, especially given that the story arcs aren't told in chronological order (for this show it's Queen, Cyan, Loli, Ghostblade, and Johnnies concurrently, then E-Soul, Dragon Boy, Ahu, Nice, and finally X). But despite these issues, the show overcomes that with top-notch production values, especially with the way the different animation styles were used, interesting characters, stories that for the most part were well-written, great action, and intense drama to make this donghua adaptation worth watching. The final episode was a great kaleidoscope of visual styles. This was a big experiment in fusing various types of animation, and I think it worked. The setting has an intriguing science fiction concept behind it. I enjoyed it, and I look forward to a sequel. But the story is a mess riddled with plot holes. 6/10 |

I'll say that I think this show is worth watching for anyone who hasn't. I don't think I've ever said before that a show was worth watching just for the fights, but this is the exception. It's not just because they look good--this isn't GOHS--it's because they're actually creative, well put together, and some of them are downright beautiful. This show probably works better as a binge watch too; in the same way that Lord of Mysteries would. This could have been a 10/10 show, but the way the story is told is frustrating and really brings it down. I'll still give it a 7.5 though for how great the visuals are and some of the characters are pretty good as well. |
