Episode 1

It starts off with Rafal, a devoted believer of geocentrism, the belief that the Earth is the center of the universe with everything revolving around it, pretty much by force seeing that anybody who doesn't believe in it or is engaged in scientific research to disprove it would be deemed a heretic. Hubert is one such person as he escaped execution twice, but he gets Rafal involved. He tells Rafal to go someplace where he can see that the Earth is moving. That got Rafal to open his eyes, and while Hubert does believe in God, he's doing this research to prove heliocentrism because of his love for God.

Episode 2

Hubert finally meets his end as he took the blame for the notebook regarding heliocentrism that was found in Rafal's locker, and thus was burned at stake. Rafal decides to leave school and head for college where he declares that he will study astronomy, but that just wasn't going to fly as his father wasn't going to sign the admittance letter unless he studies theology, which he verbally agrees to do with the intent to transfer to astronomy when the time is right. This goes to show that these religious zealots are quite serious about making sure that science doesn't prove their geocentrism theory wrong. They executed Hubert, and then Nowak kills that guy in cold blood, not thinking for a minute what would happen to his son.

So pretty much, this is a show that tells the life of Copernicus, with Rafal being the guy who would go on to prove that the world is heliocentric just like with Copernicus, this coming at a time when religion was quite a huge deal to the point that anybody who doesn't obey the church gets branded a heretic and marked for execution. It's off to a great start so far as this is a very well-constructed story that's building up.

Never thought I would see an overdramatized anime that mixes the works of Copernicus and Galileo.

This seems to be getting Vinland Saga levels of production quality, and I am not exactly sure it really needs that, but it has been decent so far.

Episode 3

Just three episodes in and the supposed MC is already killed off, while the story advances ten years featuring a new pair of MCs. As it turns out, Hubert studied under Rafal's foster father Potocki, so he's well aware of Rafal's desire to study astronomy even before meeting Hubert. But Nowak is extremely observant, and while Rafal tried to burn his notes, one of his diagrams failed to burn and was discovered by Potocki, and Nowak stuck to Rafal like glue seeing that he had contact with Hubert. Rafal had a chance to escape execution and brush everything under the rug by recanting his intent to study astronomy and instead attend the university to study theology. He thought about doing a bait-and-switch by studying theology, then when the time comes switch to astronomy, but instead he decides to give up his life to hold onto his life's research and instead puts out all the heliocentrism research in a hidden box hoping that it would be discovered posthumously, and that's exactly what happened ten years later. Rafal took his own life by swallowing poppy seeds before his lifeless body was burned at stake. Rafal realized that he doesn't want to live a life of a life, and instead hope that someday the truth gets out.

Just like how it was in history, while Copernicus got it started, it took quite a long time before heliocentrism was scientifically proven. Quite a great story developing, and it turns out that this was just the prologue to the main story with ten years having passed. Seeing that the guys who found the research were dueling that it will be interesting to see what they make of all this.

Episode 4

It's onto the next generation of guys looking to prove that the universe is heliocentric in the duelists Oczy and Gras. Those two are part of the church's inquisition squad tasked with eliminating heretics. Gras starts to doubt the truth about geocentrism as he started to observe the position of Mars in the night sky and notices that it's moving around, all while Oczy believes that being in the center is a good thing unlike that priest who believes it's a curse. And then everything changes when Oczy and Gras were ordered to execute a heretic, who tells them that there's proof that the church is wrong about geocentrism and it's found in that treasure chest, which Oczy and Gras found at the end of the last episode. So the first generation trying to prove what Copernicus observed were scholars, and now this generation the guys are duelists who are just the church's lapdog, but now they are about to change their lives forever. Whether it's for the better or if they die holding onto their beliefs like Rafal did remains to be seen.

Episode 5

And now, Oczy is faced with the same dilemma that Rafal was presented, to keep on living in ignorance or to stand up and end this farce of a world. The heretic gets killed, but with his dying breath he protects those two from Nowak, who has become quite the villain in this show as he's tormenting and toying with those who dare question the church. And then Gras bites the dust after falling off the bridge with his final words being that he needs to do either one of two things, and of course Oczy chose to do the latter. Gras lost everything to the church, and thus he lost faith in the world, but believes Oczy can help restore it. So Oczy turns to Badeni, a monk who has been secretly studying astronomy. This show just continues to do build the drama and do a nice job reflecting the Copernican Revolution as it took decades before it became fact.

Episode 6

Now that Oczy knows what needs to be done, he goes over to Badeni, and he's a monk who had one of his eyes burned out because he was reading forbidden research material. Just like with Rafal, he had the opportunity for the religious zealots to look the other way, but chose to go through with martyrdom, albeit not being executed for it unlike with Rafal. But he wasn't going to back down even though that he wouldn't have time to read much of the book. And that's where things stand as now Oczy has some new research material for Badeni to carry out, and after tracing the movements of Mars, that loop is pretty much all that was needed to prove that the Earth was moving as that wouldn't be possible under geocentrism. Interesting developments there, though this story arc is nowhere near as great as Rafal's, and the story will be going further into the future seeing that heliocentrism took decades to be proven after Copernicus first theorized it.

Episode 7

Here comes Jolenta, who is an astrologist who's dealing with perception problems of her own for being a woman. Meanwhile, Oczy agrees to be Badeni's assistant even though his cut of the profits is only 10%, which he would give to Potocki to honor his will. Jolenta writes a treatist that Kolbe submits under his name seeing that he's worried about the outrage that would come from a woman writing it. So she agrees to go along with this charade by lying to Piast that she didn't write it. And then she sees a problem posted on the board that she sneaks into Kolbe's library to solve, and then posts it back up hoping that nobody sees her, but the guy who posted the problem did. So with that, Jolenta meets up with Badeni and Oczy as now they found somebody who can help them out with their research on heliocentrism. It's quite a tough time to be a woman there seeing that they are capable of doing this stuff, but there's just so much pushback.

Episode 8

While Jolenta passed on the solution as posting it for her master, it was pretty clear to Oczy and Badeni that she solved it herself, which works out for them quite well seeing that they see her as a scholar and not a woman. And then there's Piast, who is the head of the organization that Jolenta works for. While he's a believer in geocentrism, he's also seeking out the truth, and he'll believe whatever his eyes tell him, not what rules and laws tell him. Piast is about to kick the bucket, and is telling his assistants to "become Icarus" and continue his research seeing that he was on the verge of a breakthrough. That flashback scene tells Piast's story quite nicely there going to show that the truth takes precedence before anything.

Just like that, Piast has passed away from old age, but he does so with the stars being the last thing he sees, do at the very least he dies in a place where he feels at peace. Pretty beautiful episode that was going to show that despite Piast believing in geocentrism, he will only fully believe what his eyes tell him. To carry on his research, he's letting Badeni to access his research material, while Jolenta's role is finished. That look at Venus was the last piece in disproving the geocentrism theory, and Piast dies knowing that he helped uncover a truth that's deemed heretical. This show just keeps on getting better and better as these guys did a great job in making Piast's final moment emotional.

Finally got to watching this (it's a Netflix exclusive where I live). I did not plan on binge-watching 9 episodes all midnight but, it got so interesting for me.
I did start feeling a bit of boredom and got distracted a lot during the few latest episodes, but that might just be because I was binging it. The first 3 episodes were definitely engaging though. So glad it didn't end up being one of those genius-kid-is-superior-to-all kind of show.

With the amount of episodes allocated for this season, I'd assume there will be so many more characters to handle the search for the "Truth".
This is a fascinating show that I wish more people could see.

Episode 10

Badeni moves out into the barn to do his research, and Oczy is trying to learn how to read and write, albeit without any intention of publishing anything. But knowing that it's only a matter of time before the inquisition comes for them that Badeni has Oczy digging a tunnel while he continues his research. Oczy has been giving away his food to others in need, and even though Badeni was unwilling to increase his rations, he ends up offering some of his. Over the next several months, Badeni sees flaws in the records Piast took and after applying numerous theories, he finally finds out the truth in that the orbits are elliptical rather than circular. And how Badeni got the scars is revealed as it happened back when he was in the academy where he had a duel with a close acquaintance of his. So in the end, Badeni found the truth, but now the church is gearing up for an inquisition as Nowak is back to train the church members to be inquisitors. Looks like the end is coming soon for Badeni and Oczy and the first half will finish up with those two trying to pass down their research before they become victims of the inquisition.

Nothing ever slips by Nowak as the show's main menace shows up again, and he's making two trainees torture some poor lady who was just trying to do some foraging expecting to get some info about the black mass. Antoni takes exception to the way Nowak does things, and one of the trainee inquisitors has no problem, the other does. They got her to spill the beans about Anna being the one who tipped her off. And then Oczy and Badeni meet up with Jolenta again as they are planning to run away. But little did they know that Jolenta is Nowak's daughter, and Oczy had a previous encounter with that guy, which his how he knows that he's bad news. Even though Jolenta is his daughter, he kept his job as an inquisitor a secret from her. Looks like the end is coming for those two as that guy just snuck up on them and nothing ever gets past him.

Badeni did a solid job in hiding his research, except that there's just one problem. He failed to hide the heretic's necklace that Oczy has been carrying around, and after Nowak sees it, he mobilizes the inquisitors to execute those two. Now that Nowak is onto them, they have to get away and seeing that Badeni needs to pass down his research, if nothing else, that Oczy decides to take a stand against Nowak and his inquisition recruits. He kills them with the last one impaling himself with his own sword by accident when he tries to run away. And so, it's Oczy and Nowak engaged in a high-stakes duel knowing that if he fails to at least buy Badeni enough time to do what he needs to do, all hope will be lost. That Nowak shows once again that nothing gets buy him, and he will resort to all sorts of tactics to ensure that heretics are disposed of, which includes hiding his real job from his daughter, who is obviously the one who tipped him off about those two seeing that she wouldn't say those things if she had known who her father really is.

And not long after Oczy is detained, Badeni is caught, and the two get tortured and interrogated. Of course, Badeni just won't bend knowing the stakes and that his life is insignificant compared to his cause. That was pretty painful to watch there as Nowak goes to show that he's not messing around and doesn't believe what Badeni said about him burning the documents. So he outed the location where he hid his research material, but before he was captured Badeni had hid Oczy's research and is leaving it up to chance to see if it gets discovered or not. And after that, the two get executed under the night sky as the last thing they see in their lives. And afterwards Jolenta gets the torture treatment seeing that she was seen with Oczy and Badeni and it wasn't until that moment that she learned that her father is an inquisitor, which changes everything seeing that she would have been far more careful had she known. The inquisition trainee who refused to torture that lady decides to believe that Jolenta didn't know anything as she was instructed to do, and sends her away with him covering for her. So with that, the second act comes to a close with Oczy and Badeni becoming martyrs for heliocentrism, while Jolenta is trying to distance herself from her father after learning what his real job is.

And Jolenta is executed for being a heretic. Or at least, that's what Nowak thinks just happened as it was actually the inquisitor trainee who was burned at stake as her body double as the real Jolenta got away while giving her gloves her father gave her 10 years ago. Those gloves were a size too big when Jolenta was first given them, but they served as a momento for her. So while Jolenta lives, so does the research as Badeni left Grabowski with instructions to go down a secret chamber if they aren't given bread for a month, and the 60 followers with them shave the backside of their heads to reveal text that was written on their heads and hidden by their hair that reveal the contents of his research seeing that the actual books went up in smoke. Badeni sure was prepared realizing that he was going to be dead soon.

And now, the show moves into the third arc as 25 years have passed since Oczy and Badeni were executed, while Jolenta faked her death to escape. This arc centers around Schmidt and Duraka. To start things off, Schmidt pretends to be captured by the inquisition, but has his buddies Frei and Lewandowski disguise themselves as inquisitors to begin the operation to steal a book hidden beneath the church and escape. Schmidt convinces the heretics there to keep on being heretics and join his liberation force to someday get the heretics exonerated. As for how Schmidt came to be, his parents were killed by the church 25 years ago as they were also astronomers who were deemed heretics by the church, and they sacrificed themselves so that Schmidt can live. With the inquisition hot on their tails, Schmidt's group heads to the abandoned village where Schmidt was born to hide the book, but the inquisition is already there and Schmidt needs to just focus on escaping for now to regroup. It turns out that Antoni is leading the inquisition this time, and Antoni doesn't agree with how Nowak handled it, so he's in charge this time aroudn.

Schmidt is quite the talker there as he convinces others to follow in his line of thinking, what he said about half-truths leading to misunderstandings and misunderstandings leading to unnatural tragedies that are intolerable pretty much sums things up. Should be another great arc here as Schmidt has made a great impression already, all while he's got a very proactive way of thinking.

Man... "25 years later"??? But I wanted to see Nowak brutalize that priest that was f'n with him. It better still happen.

While I expected the torch passing, there's a feeling in me that's kind of bummed that there are now 3 good protags that were not the ones to finish the job.
I'd expect Jolenta to be involved in some faction though-- maybe she's the "leader" they mentioned? Idk.

As much as I understand the idea that the change they're looking for takes decades if not centuries to happen, Anime-wise, I'd rather this not continue on with multiple different protags anymore from different timelines. It would be poetic to look back and see the conclusion of what started- Anime-wise- with Rafal be accomplished by someone generations later but, it'd be less satisfying not to see at least one of the people who laid the groundwork see the fruit of their strong convictions.

It's a bit hypocritical coming from me, someone who admittedly prefers realism nowadays but, I just don't want those 3 protags to be pushed further down an increasing list of them.

The other MC in this arc is introduced as Draka is a girl from a nomadic tribe who is very intelligent and is always looking to help out her tribe, all thanks to her late father who told her to follow her own conviction and that God really doesn't exist. As such, she's always on the lookout to make a money as efficiently as possible to help out her tribe. The fateful day comes when Antoni and his inquisition squad comes for her uncle accused of hiding booze in the basement, but her uncle came prepared by showing her niece the book that Schmidt hid in the last episode that changed her fate as he puts it. And after her uncle was caught, he makes a deal with Antoni to have them take Draka as a slave instead. Draka is quite the headstrong girl there as she just isn't going to blindly follow what the church tells her, and that makes her the right person to learn about heliocentrism. But before that, she will need to find a way out of this mess realizing how brutal the inquisition is.

While Draka is put in a bad situation by her uncle, she remained calm under pressure by giving Antoni a warning about how money isn't everything. Then Schmidt, being undercover agents with Antoni, attacks to save Draka, but her uncle gets killed in the process. Draka is asked to hand over the book to Schmidt, but she burns it instead and having memorized the book's contents, she's too valuable an asset. So Draka goes along with Schmidt and they don't exactly see eye-to-eye, but they agree that the church is corrupt with Draka being an atheist and Schmidt believing that the church's orthodoxy has corrupted God. Schmidt's objective is to publish the book now that he has the printing press has been invented, and they need to convince Draka to help get it out since it can't be done without her. As for the leader Schmidt has been talking about, that would be Jolenta. Draka continues to show off her intelligence as now she's in a position of leverage as to whether this Operation Information Liberation goes forward or not. Jolenta sure looks a lot different now and I'm quite curious to know what she had been up to in the 25 years since she ran away and how she met Schmidt to form this resistance group.

And now, the scene shifts to the church introducing the inquisitor Asch and the bishop Damian. In the 25 years since his daughter faked her death that Nowak is unaware about, she has become an old drunk. As it turns out, the book was hidden in the village a year ago and the final part is the clue the church is trying to figure out as it leads to Potocki, who has long since been dead and another family now lives in his old home. While Nowak has been out of the loop, when Asch mentions the Heretic Liberation Front, he's back on his feet and is ready to squash the heretical concept of heliocentrism once and for all, though he's in for quite a surprise when he finds out who leads the resistance.

Back to the main story, the 39-year-old Jolenta is testing Draka to see if she can be trusted, and having passed the test Jolenta explains her history as six years after faking her death, she started up her resistance group to overthrow the church believing that it's not anybody's right to threaten a person's ideological freedom and will kill anybody who does that. And she also has a printing press prepared for Draka as Jolenta leaves it up to Draka to decide what she wants to do with the knowledge from the book. Should be interesting to see where this goes, but once again Nowak is back as the big bad after drowning away in his sorrows for way too long.

The inquisitors are coming for the Heretic Liberation Front, and Jolenta decides to confront them herself while entrusting the future to Draka. As such, she confronts inquisitors herself and sets off an explosion, something the inquisitors have never seen before. As Nowak didn't get a good look at Jolenta's face that he doesn't know that it was his daughter who set off the explosion. Jolenta chose to become a martyr as she's doing this to buy time so that Draka and the rest of the HLF can do what they need to in order to publish the book and get the word out about the bogus ideology the church is forcing everybody to believe in. And then there's Schmidt pointing out that he distrusts anything made by man, and that includes God's teachings, which was all motivated by his late sister who tragically passed away young. While they got the inquisition off their back for now, there's the matter of the knights as Antoni operates much differently than Nowak.
