Plot Summary

A man who was thirty years old and wanted to use magic died unexpectedly, and when he woke up, he was reborn in another world. Named Theon, he had high hopes that there would be magic in another world, but there was no magic in that world.

Theon became depressed and lethargic, but an event led him to discover the existence of magic.

"That's right. If there is no magic, then I will make it myself."

With this in mind, Theon began researching magic from that day onwards. Eventually, through the spread of a disease that can only be cured by magic, and a chance encounter with an enemy that can only be defeated by magic, Theon becomes a hero who saves the world. This is the story of a simple magic fool who, while tossed about by fate, overcomes it with the power of magic and an indomitable fighting spirit, ultimately propagating magic to the people.

Episode 1

And it begins with Shion reincarnated into another world as the son of a humble family in the countryside with her loving big sister Marie. He's in a fantasy world, but the concept of magic doesn't exist in this world. Marie has been training with the sword, while Shion has been doing lots of research and looking to discover its existence in this world. His first opportunity to discover magic comes from the river when lights are glowing. It turns out it comes from a common species of trout falling in love seeing that females are quite rare. And then after Shion and Marie become determined to stay together, and Shion glows. So Shion now knows it does exist, but hasn't been discovered yet. While it's another isekai show, the concept is at least a creative one where it's all about creating magic in a place where the concept is foreign.

It's off to a slow start. It looks like they're going to build up the magic gradually. In some ways it's the opposite of Possibly the Greatest Alchemist of all time, where the main character jumps right into being a capable magic user. In other ways it's similar, since Shion will have the monopoly on magic in this world, giving him huge advantages.

I'll probably keep watching, but the cast needs to age up some more.

Interesting seeing an Isekai from the perspective of someone other than the reincarnated person. Will we stay that perspective or focus on Liam from now on

Well, that took a weird turn. I thought he was going to create magic through sheer force of chuuni but it turns out the key was wincest. Extra creepy wincest given that he is presumably an adult mentally.

I'm going to assume they aren't blood related and mom just found him in the woods or something. Or at least I'm going to hope that is the case.

Nice to see that isekai can still throw a few twists out there.

His hypothesis of having somehow internalized the magic from the fish seems like a pretty wild leap in logic and I really hope it ends up being wrong. It will be telling for what kind of show this is if every first supposition he comes up with is correct.

There was a moment partway through when he was looking at his sister and I was thinking hmmmm. But then Rose showed up and you could see his obvious interest there so I figured we weren't doing the sister route. Then they pulled the ol double switch on us. Of course this being an isekai he could easily end up with both and a few others too.

Given there are 4 girls in the promotional image that seems likely.

I suppose we have to wait and see which one turns out to be his slave. -.-

If it does, at least it got nabbed by Crunchyroll and not HiDive.
Every time HiDive simulcasts a show with stat screens half the stat screen gets cut out or are dotted all over the screen so it's hard to read them.

Episode 2

That was a pretty amusing reference to Cherry Magic seeing that it's clear he's a big fan of that BL manga where being a virgin at age 30 makes him a wizard in his old life. And back in his new life, Shion comes up with something that works like magic as organs radiate a special kind of energy, and has entered a magically-charged state, but he still has quite a lot to figure out as it's all trial and error at this point. In the meantime, Marie is training to be a swordsman, and she's quite skilled with it at her age. And for Marie's birthday, the family goes into town to get her a new sword for her birthday crafted by a trusted blacksmith. And then Shion comes across a shop that sells fairies, which of course peaks his interest but something is amiss here seeing that he father wants to keep him in the dark about that place. While it's great to see Shion and Marie becoming close as siblings, there's a big mystery to be solved as the presents of fairies contradict the fact that this world has no magic.

At least whatever sort of magic he ends up with won't just be handed to him on a sliver platter like almost all the other fantasy MC's this season. Seeing someone actually have to figure it out themselves is a nice change.

Maybe when these two get older they'll figure out the difference between familial love and romantic.

Episode 3

There's a goblin attack, and Shion's father leads a unit goes out to fight them. Shion brings everybody to the second floor of their mansion seeing that goblins aren't supposed to be intelligent enough to make their way up, but they underestimated a goblin's intelligence as one made their way. Shion's mother gets critically wounded protecting the kids, and Marie couldn't do anything against the goblin. But Shion used his "magic" to defeat the goblin, and used his basic medical knowledge from his previous life to save his mother. Afterwards, his father asks Shion to end his magic research, but Shion convinces him to allow him to continue on the condition that he reports everything he finds out. And thus, Shion the magician has been born as he's about to shake the world in a big way.

Maybe I'd like this show better after the cast grows up some more, but maybe not. It doesn't appeal to me, and I can't accept the idea that the locals have no concept of basic first aid. Somebody should be stitching the mom up right away. I'll check in now and then to see how things are going, but I'm done for now.

Also, how awful are the many books in his dad's library if they contain no references whatever to the existence of monsters, no mention of medicine, and nothing he could remotely claim sparked his imagination in some way? Is it all economic treatises?

Well I thought that was pretty good. They did a good job of making the goblin seriously menacing. It's nice to see a goblin portrayed as a real threat and not some weak creature a little kid with a sword could chop up no problem for once.

The mom laying in bed with a smile on her face while seriously wounded looked silly though.

I can't tell if the mom is awake or unconscious, her face always looks the same. Well at least they got me to look at her face ;) So I guess his dad doesn't know shit about goblins and he was lying about magic. Let me guess after not forming any relationships in his previous life forming them and expressing emotions will be the key to magic in this one. Seems like the incest was just a red herring because it was the only way he knew to make magic.
Also was that goblin naked? was that pubic hair between his legs or a fur loin cloth? Seemed kind of low for a loin cloth. When they showed him on his back the goblin had an ass crack too so...I always thought it weird for such unintelligent rapey creatures they are always shown wearing loin cloths "welp better put on my diaper before I go out and try to rape some humans, wouldn't want them to be offended by the sight of my genitalia before I stick it inside them" 9_9 At least this show has actually threatening monsters instead of cute pokemon that magically disappear when you bonk them on the head.

Exactly, even today parents kill their kids for "having a demon inside them" can't imagine what it was like in the middle ages. "Dad I want to practice the black arts, no you'll go to hell, well I'm doing to do it anyway, hmmm ok wait here I'm going to get the priest and some kindling wood, oh are you going to make him something to eat?...yeah, sure" Guess this author hasn't been around any religiously fervent individuals.

@MenchiK1 What religion? So far we haven't seen a hint of what any religion in this world is like. I think in any primitive society people would look at someone with strange powers they'd never seen before as being dangerous even without any religious taboos in the mix. Even in non primitive societies; think how mutants are viewed in the X-Men.

Episode 4

Shion's magical research is finally happening, and he starts out with fire, and while he has a breakthrough, he still has a lot to learn seeing that he's still getting burned. So while he has something going with the fire research, he wants to try lightning next, and for that he needs to get his hands on a thunder ore, which is very dangerous to mine. And while he somewhat has a handle on fire, not so much with lightning. And then Shion and Marie spend some quality time bonding as brother and sister seeing that this magic research has put a strain on their relationship. So things are off to a good start for Shion's magic research as he already did something seeing that his research only has just begun, but he will need to keep things up or else his father will tell him to abandon it.

If your hands are getting blistered so badly because you keep swinging the sword...why would you take the wraps off your hands to go swing it some more.

I've never understood the entire idea in anime that constantly swinging a sword is like the most important training you can do for with a sword...

This episode made me feel like they are Temu Rudy and Eris even more. Now they can just have sex and Marie can run off to try and catch up to him.

Swinging a sword is basically the main thing you can do for training outside of sparring. To build the muscles and treat it like an extension of your body.

I would question her form though, you'd tend to want to do practice swings in proper form for the style.

Though with their skeletal limbs maybe some pushups wouldn't hurt ...

In that case using something heavier than the sword would help, not a wooden stick, like is usually seen. I would also think using some sort of target to try hitting different areas would help too, but in anime, it just swinging the sword over and over and over.

@HOOfan_1 For kendo there are weighted wooden swords available though still using a shinai is very common.

Adding weight to it will build muscle mass but those aren't necessarily the muscles you need for the movement required. Depends what's specifically being worked on. If you add 10 lbs to a sword, then you'll be building your 'up' muscles and not 'down' since gravity will take it down for you, and that can produce imbalance in arms and legs and core.

But it's just lazy anime stuff I dunno. A normal stick does seem dumb, but maybe she breaks everything else the father gives her so he stopped trying.

I saw it more as she practiced until her hands blistered, she put the the bandages on and then when they healed started practicing again but now she has callouses.

Yeah I am not getting the point of the whole "incest" vibe. Although I guess you can just look at as they are really close and care about each other. Maybe it's just a tease like shows do with yuri all the time.

Pretty sure with Japanese katana it's having a proper swing (like baseball I suppose) that's more important than strength. I was just watching a youtube video and the competition was slicing through 4 bamboo poles and most barely got through 3 but the guy with the best form easily sliced through all 4 and he wasn't the biggest or oldest or anything. You could see the angle he swung at was just slightly different but it made a huge difference, so I imagine it took a lot of practice to make sure his swing was at that precise angle and speed, etc.

Anyway the pace of this show is so tediously slow, by the time he learns any real magic this season will be over. Not sure I can stick around to see him make ahego faces when he learns how to make his magic into pretzel shapes or whatever minuscule milestone he achieves next.

Edge alignment can be extremely important with swords. I'm sure that was the difference there. While it's not so critical against opponents in metal armor, obviously, against anything else it can mean the difference between a shallow wound and a fatal one.

After making fire magic, Shion moves onto lightning, and with help from the blacksmith Grast, who is able to turn the thunder ores into something much less dangerous to handle, Shion has invented the lighting lamp and lightning striker, which sell like hotcakes at Grast's shop. And then Shion gets the breakthrough he had been searching for, which comes when he figures out that while a normal fire would be snuffed out without oxygen, the blue flare stay lit meaning that it reacts with the magical power in the air. And then to put his theory to the test, he has Grast making him a glove utilizing the lightning ore, and with that he has created usable magic. But now, Shion gets some shocking news in that he's not a blood relative. Shion really showed what he's capable of there, but now comes bigger questions after hearing it from his parents that they are not his blood relatives.

What a twist! That was already predicted!

Anyway, I'm liking this show. I like seeing the magic system being developed/discovered from scratch. It's also pretty novel seeing a magic system that has so much reliance on physical components instead of just chants and or visualization.

I think they could come up with a better design for those lamps though. Making it so the insulator slides/rotates out of the way would be much less awkward than having to pull it up out of the lamp.

With Shion apparently not related by blood with Marie, that means marriage is on the table. But he's not thinking about that for now as for now he's moving onto water magic after establishing a foothold on fire and lightning magic. So Shion wants to put the magic to the test as he gets Grast to take them out on a monster quest, but Gawain saw through that scheme, and it turns out that Gawain is a diamond-rank adventurer, so he's quite famous around town. With Gawain around, he reduces the numbers so that the kids have a manageable battle for their first quest. The battle took everything out of the kids and they are all roughed up, but still standing. Enough to go into a hideout where an imprisoned fairy lies as the three free it. After that, they come home and Emma is none too pleased about dirty the kids are, so they take a bath. While Shion isn't blood-related, that's an issues that has been put aside for another day.

As it's a disease that has been spreading around like wildfire, and Gawain and Shion rushes her into town with Shion using magic to defeat wolves, as well as to exorcise a ghost that Gawain can't see. They make it into the hospital, and it's what they feared, lethargy sickness that currently has no cure. None of the new isekais this season are exactly going to break into my favorite isekais list, but most of them are at least above average. They've at least made the MC being isekai'd a big enough part of the story that you couldn't just swap them out with a character from that world and have basically the same story. Noble on the Brink of Ruin is about the only exception.
