Episode 1 And here, we have a show that appears to be a ripoff of Mashle with the MC being a guy who can't use magic at a magic academy, but is a strong man as his swordsmanship is second to none. And while Mashle focuses on comedy, this show is more focused on storytelling and Will proving naysayers like Sion and Edward wrong. While Will can't use magic, he's not to be messed with seeing that he's strong with the sword, all while he really does his homework and hits the books. While it feels like another generic fantasy show with a gimmick, this appears to be going somewhere with it.

This one seems to be mash(le)ing a lot of different shows together. We've got the strong guy in a world where only magic is respected showing that strength surpasses magic of Mashle. The tone is much closer to Reign of the Seven Spell Blades, not to mention the Labyrinth that the school uses to train students. They didn't tell us the fate of red hair's two companions, but unless there's some weird spell in that dungeon, they're dead.... We have the childhood friend boy who made a promise to stand beside the prodigy girl, but has fallen short for years like Kaiju No. 8. The dungeon, and tower above it also have strong Danmachi vibes. They seemed to have gone all out at least on the first episode with animation too.

The second eyecatch was giving the same info about Elfaria the show did, but also snuck in that her first love was Will, her favorite foods are a variety of things made by Will, and she does actually watch him from the tower. Oh, and she dislikes spicy food.

Wasn't someone asking where the skinny waif MC was this season? I think he's here... Overall, the production values are good. I'm pretty sure they're using a lot of fairly subtle and quite well done CGI in this. Nothing looked horribly out of place to me though so I'm not going to complain about it. Story is nothing special, but the action scenes are definitely above average. I'll keep watching, but from early impressions I don't expect this to be much better than a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.

@HOOfan_1 This also reminds me of Black Clover. Taking the show synopsis above and modifying a few phrases make it match Black Clover (without the academy aspect): Asta dreams of keeping his promise to a childhood friend Yuno by becoming the Wizard King , the magician who is the top wizard. However, he is unable to cast even the simplest of spells, leaving him to fight with his sword skills to earn merit in Clover Kingdom. The animation is pretty sweet. Hope it keeps up for the other episodes or at least the fighting scenes.

That was pretty good. The premise isn't exactly new, but I thought it had some nice touches. I liked his cabbit/pokemon familiar thing. It seems like he and that girl balance each other out. She's the pinnacle of magic where he's the pinnacle of warriors. Now this is how you do CG backgrounds. For once I'd like to see this sort of thing done where there isn't the one girl who sticks up for him. Though, now that I think about, Naruto did that. At the beginning the only one in his class that didn't look down on him was Hinata and she was too shy to speak up for him. I like how he didn't beat around the bush and straight up told the blonde girl she was cute.

That looked...expensive. So it's Harry Potter but he's a muggle...though I don't know about anyone else but weren't his powers in the dungeon, I don't know? Magical! How else do you get super speed and strength and your sword stroke can decapitate monsters just with the wind it generates from 20 feet away? Wouldn't it be more interesting if he actually did only use his brain?

@marklebid Too be honest, many, if not most anime, where the characters are supposedly finding such smart solutions to problems don't come off as particularly cunning.

@HOOfan_1 The difficulty with trying to write smart solutions to problems is the fact you either have to be smart enough to think of them, or know someone who is smarter than you and willing to help you work them out while you write!

@Astral_Iguana I honestly wouldn't care if they came up with some complete BS as long as it worked within the shows established rules. You can blow up the death star by shooting a proton torpedo down the exhaust port? Don't care why, it works for me.

Episode 2 Seemed gratuitous and uninspired. Only takeways of note for the first eyecatch of Wagner is he likes super spicy food and then rests his tongue with 'white ice'. Professor of magical animals. When he was younger he was apparently a baddass respected by friends and enemies with several nicknames. Lowest dungeon level 31. I was too bored to want to read Snape's bio. Edit: Ok I went back to his, nothing at all seemed interesting or different from what was already covered. He likes coffee. Lowest dungeon level 33.

Episode 2 And now, Will shows what a master swordsman who has studied magic despite not being able t use it can do. Edward gives him a test to land a strike against him, a master-class mage, and without a sword he's hopelessly outmatched. But once he got his sword, he quickly turns the tides and lands a hit by striking from a blind spot. Way to show everybody that he worked hard to earn his grades and is somebody who is worthy of being a Divine Visionary even without using magic.

Snape doing Snape things. The headmaster seems remarkably unconcerned that Snape was straight up trying to kill the guy. Has no one theorized that he actually does have magic it's just physically enhancing magic? His speed and strength are superhuman.

@runec That's what I said, how can he do these things without magic? Also how does someone without magic have a familiar? Don't you have to summon them...with magic? Also why go after some elf in a tower when you have an orange haired cutie right in front of you?

Maybe they don't see him as using magic because it falls outside of anything they would recognize as magic. In the first episode they said he's as tough as a dwarf and they probably don't see a dwarves toughness as being magic so to them his physical abilities aren't magic either. Even if they did think he was in some way magical that wouldn't help him get spellcraft credits since he can't cast any spells. The fight scenes in this aren't just well animated they're well choreographed too. The way the movements between will and the professor were mirroring each other was a lot more clever than what you get in most shows. Even well animated ones.

Wow looks like puberty hit the elf girl since she went to the tower. I liked nerd girl until she revealed herself, 14? Uhh right. Also no way that dude is that ripped but didn't develop a single neck muscle, now we know why his gay roommate helps him out. I realize he has special abilities that makes up for the fact he can't do magic, but shouldn't that kind of just make him even in ability with really good magic users? Why is he even more powerful than them?

@SparkyBob For some reason the credits keep obfuscating the actor's name for Rosty. Says ?????. Which is weird 'cause even if he stayed male it's not unusual for a female seiyuu to do boys.

Episode 3 And Elfa is calling for Will as she has a secret plan to get Will promoted to being a Magia Vander much sooner. For that, she sends down Iris down to keep tabs on Will, all while issuing an order to collect Frost Walker cores seeing that she is the Magia Vander of ice. Will encounters the Frost Rex, but he makes quick work of that thanks to Rosty's handy tools. When all is said and done, Iris puts in a recommendation for Will, but the Magia Vanders won't make a decision until after the Grand Festival. Will is still having to deal with the naysayers, but at the very least he's doing whatever job is in front of him.

Episode 4 The time for the Grand Magic Festival is coming, and Julius, who is one of the top students in the school, is showing off. There's an underground sportsbook in the locker room, and everybody is placing bets illegally. And seeing how Will was an absolute mess the last time he participated that Will has no intention of entering. But that all changed when Julius walks into the restaurant Will works at part-time to pay for his tuition, and Julius insults the dwarves, a race looked down upon, and Will is trying to stand up for them. But instead, Julius decides that he wants to embarrass Will at the festival, and makes Will enter it. This school has so many arrogant students here, but Julius definitely needs to be taught a lesson.

I was kinda hoping that the redhaired dick (for some reason I can't recall the names in this show) was stepping up to "join the team" and kick bluehair's ass during that last battle, but noooo. Going to be a dick no matter what. Unless this is all some sort of ploy they decided on en route to catch bluehair off guard and will be revealed at the beginning of next episode. But that would require clever writing and I haven't much hope of that in this show.

Attacking Will at this point is nonsensical. Especially given he didn't hurt ice boy at all. Let's see which Will we get next episode: Capable super human Will or bumbling doof Will. |

Episode 5 Let the games begin! First event is the Crown Attack where Will teams up with Colette and Sion to battle the traps and the other students to get the crown, and things start out quite well with Will charging in to take out the traps with Colette backing him up, but things take a turn when they run into Julius as he's hellbent on putting Will in his place at the festival. And now even though Will and Sion are supposed to be teammates for this event, Sion challenges Will to a duel. Things were going quite well to begin with, but now Will has run into some problems.

It's too bad such a nicely animated show has such lame characters and meh story. So once Sion found out whose team he would be on why not just quit? And sorry but Will is completely dependent on Collette's magic, that and everything is lamely easily defeated by physical force instead of actual magic. There should be strong normal people all over this world kicking lame magicians asses. Also what kind of magical obstacle course doesn't have a stretch where you have to magically fly over it instead of being able to easily run everywhere? And now that Colette has been frozen solid I guess I have no one left to root for. :(

Episode 6 Sion just can't let his pride take a back seat even in a moment like this seeing that Will and Sion are teammates, and attacking each other reflects very poorly on him. The team would have easily won the event if he did just that as there will be other times to settle this grudge. But then he goes and summons his guardian deity, a giant fire falcon, and Will was forced to fight back, and manages to defeat it. Just as they were about to take each other out, Colette breaks up the fight and tells Will to go after Julius, who had cloned himself with those ice roses. Sion needs to get his head checked seeing that as much as he can't stand Will, he could have at least waited until after the event as he's only hurting himself with this duel that at the very least, Colette broke up just in the nick of time before things got really bad.

Again Colette saves his ass. And uhh didn't she say she kicked Julius' ass? Is that why he was walking triumphantly into the stadium? Also Sion has a spell that levels the entire forest, Will is only saved by Colette's Earth wall so when she is out of the fight instead of doing the same spell he does a bunch of other weaker shit (a flame whip grabbing his ankle? yet doesn't burn him), lame. Also when Colette stopped the fight why did the entire burned to a crisp forest turn green again? Was it not real fire? Also Sion's whole motivation for hating Will was "look at me senpai (even though they are in the same grade)"? 9_9
