I probably missed something but after reading it I still have unanswered questions.

Why was Uta severly depressed when she was younger?
Was it just because her mother went abroad? Feels exaggerated.

Why did Uta's mother treat her so coldly?
Uta seemed like a cheerful and normal kid but her mother say she was a terrible child. (chapter 17)

Why couldn't Uta's mother practice medicine in Japan?
The way they talked about it (again, chapter 17) it seemed like she had done something. But when the flashback happened she didn't do anything that should've cost her her license. All she did was keep Kaoru's mother's illness a secret from Kaoru.

I'm posting this quite late but hopefully someone has some insight.

I don't think any of these were thoroughly explained. She gave a brief explanation about how her mother was always working when she returned to living with her parents but that's about it.
