Plot Summary

In the world of magic, there exist deadly irreversible techniques commonly known as spellblades. These sparse and elusive spells, along with their casters, are shrouded in mystery and only their absolute lethality is known to the masses.

Every year, the spring blossom signifies a new intake of students to the prestigious magic school Kimberly. With reactions of awe and bewilderment, a ceremonious parade complete with magical beasts welcomes the newcomers to the institution. Among them is the mysterious Oliver Horn, whose indifference changes to fascination as he notices a peculiar figure—a girl wearing strange attire equipped with a Japanese sword.

From the entrance ceremony onward, Oliver realizes that not all is as it seems at Kimberly, as the emergence of labyrinths, monsters, and other threats endanger the new student body. Nanatsu no Maken ga Shihai suru explores the intertwined fates of two warriors as they uncover the dark truths that lurk within the walls of the academy.

Episode 1

To start things off, the main cast gathers together right before the entrance ceremony at Kimberly Academy, and the students get a rude welcoming.  Seeing that 1 out of every 5 students here die that it's appropriate that there would be danger to start things off.  A spell cast on Katie's legs caused her to run towards a griffin, all while a troll goes berserk but Nanao is there to save the day.  And then introductions and a warning about how dangerous this place is.  Then after spending a night at the dorm, Oliver ends up getting a glimpse of Nanao's scar-filled body as she was purifying herself at a fountain right by the boy's dorm.  So far, it's mostly action and introductions and not much of a story, but it's a show with intrigue.

So with the characters, they come from places that resemble real world locastions.  Oliver and Michela come from this world's equivalent to Great Britain, Katie is from America, Guy is from Australia, and Nano is obviously from this world's Japan, while Pete's origins are a mystery.  The light novel is pretty good from what I'm hearing, and while it doesn't necessarily translate to a great show, this is one I took great interest in, and in particular the mystery aspect to it as the fact that 20% of this school's students die is probably no accident.

"20% of the students die, live as you want..."

Meaning, "We don't have enough staff for all you brats and we're not good at adulting. See ya if I see ya."

Then the senpais come in and say, "she was exagerating" I kind of doubt that girl's father would let her be there if she has a 20% chance of dying.

The only thing this show has going for it is the promise of brutality. If it goes really softball on that promise, it's going to be a boring Harry Potter clone.

Reign of the Seven Ultimate Techniques isn't great English for starters but i guess if it's not referring to people, then "Spellblade" is the wrong word.

Episode 2

The school administration sure wasn't kidding when they said that 20% of students die before graduation.  First, there's the intense duel between Oliver and Nanao as Nanao shows off her skills that show why she has killed so many on the battlefield before.  Somebody would have died there when the anti-lethality spell was unconsciously removed had Garland not stopped them from fighting.  Then there's the silkworm exercise in which Katie tried to salvage one of them rather than burning it and got bit by one which would have been worse had her friends not risked their grades to save her.  And then it's onto the labyrinth underneath that only opens up at night, and awaiting Oliver is Ophelia and Cyrus, and together they have killed students who ventured into this area.

So after a rough first episode, things settle down a bit here, and seeing that this is by the same guy who did Alderamin in the Sky that patience is required seeing that Alderamin got off to a slow start before hitting its stride midway through.  The leads in that show involve a strategist and a sword prodigy, and while Nanao has the latter part down, Oliver is still developing his skills as a strategist.

This feels like it was written for ten year olds and that's it based on a video game. Not sure if I can get through a whole season of it.

So I guess the upperclassmen are in their thirties and forties. Does this school take that long to get through? Time travel effects? With how dangerous they say this place is you'd think anyone who takes that long to get through it would've gotten killed a long time ago.

Ikr. What's hard for her to understand about 'let's not kill each other.' unless she's got some weird death wish and she thinks he does too.

Yeah the fifth year guy seemed older than the teachers.

The entire sinister aspect of this school is all over the place.

"we're sorry about the ogre that got loose and nearly killed a student"

"your fate is your own, 20% of you won't survive"

"I've made it so your blades can't hurt anyone else, anyone who tries to fight with lethal blades will be punished"

"these monsters can attack you, no one is allowed to help anyone else"

"teachers and upperclassmen patrol the school to help students drawn into the labyrinth"...but guess what the labyrinth is dangerous because of the older students....

Episode 3

So it turns out that Cyrus and Ophelia were looking to fight each other, but Cyrus blocks their exit.  And then Nanao comes in to join the fight before it gets broken up by the student council president Alvin.  This episode focuses largely on Nanao as she was somebody who just lived to kill, but that all changed when just before she was about to take out the enemy leader on the battlefield, somebody from the academy reached out to her and gave her a new outlook.  Now she seeks her "Shiawase" as it's called, which is something she realized when she had that sparring match with Olver.  But seeing how the six amigos are a tightknit group that she's convinced to have a new outlook on life.  And then Katie goes over to the troll that went berserk at the parade, and Darius was set to kill it, but it's a good thing that somebody let them know that it's needed for evidence to piece together what exactly happened.  Katie's parents are quite famous human rights activists, so she has a target on her back.  It remains to be seen where Vera's allegiances lie, but in any case she's somebody who's suspicious.

As for the titular spellblades, I get the feeling that this is the reason why a number of students die here as it's a well-kept secret.  I would have to think that when two spellblade clash, that guarantees that one of them will die.   In any case, the mysteries are starting to really pile up here, from Nanao's life to Katie's background, and the spellblades as well as there are six of them, but as the title implies there's a seventh one out there that hasn't shown himself yet.  This is how things played out in Alderamin in the Sky as it brings in mystery and suspiciousness among the leadership and down the line it makes a big impact.

The story and characters however, immediately halfway down the drain in this episode.

Episode 4

Just like that, Oliver and Nanao have turned an enemy into a friend.  They get challenged to a duel by Richard, who hails from the prestigious Andrews family that is rivaled only by the McFarlane family, and initially it was going to be a duel to see who can slay more kobolds.  But Nanao raised an objection as she will only battle willing combatants.  And then everything changes when a garuda attacks, which is not only powerful but intelligent as well, with a message that they know squat about how it feels to be the prey.  After it kills students on a rampage, Nanao engages with it in battle, and with help from Oliver with Richard even lending a hand, she beheads it.  That was quite an intense battle there as the first student deaths happen inside the coliseum.  Richard sure changed his line of thinking in a big way, all while everybody realizes that they can learn from Nanao's battlefield experience, and in particular that there's no shame in running away from a battle one cannot win, which is something many of the spectators failed to grasp.

Next time, Vera is up to something sinister as Katie's new friend apparently sees her as something else entirely.

Not to mention are the students allowed to fight each other or aren't they...make up your mind. Seems like this incident would get the Andews guy expelled if the others were put in prison cells for starting a fight against bullies.

Episode 5

It's hard to trust anybody at this school now, and Darius said it perfectly when he gave Oliver that warning to choose his friends and acquaintances carefully.  Oliver really shows off his extensive knowledge during alchemy class there as he knew exactly what to do to prevent somebody from accidentally getting killed.  And then Katie meets the one who cast the spell at the entrance ceremony that had Katie running towards that troll as that girl is fiercely opposed to demi-human rights and Katie's parents are activists.  Just when it looked like Katie found somebody who resonates with her cause in Vera, it turns out that because Katie got that troll to speak that she became Vera's guinea pig as Vera sees her as the key piece to her demi-human mental manipulation project.  And Vera's gaze can turn anybody into stone, which she nearly did with Nanao had Oliver not saved her.  Once again, this goes to show that this academy is quite a dangerous place and that the principal wasn't joking when she said that a number of students won't live to graduate from this school

This really is a lot like High Guardian Spice. The dialogue and character interactions are terrible, like they're written for eight year olds, and then they throw in these violent scenes with blood all over the place--only Spellblades has waaaaay better animation. I guess both shows tried to be Harry Potter and find that broad appeal across different age groups, but the writers have no idea how to do it so it just comes off as silly and stupid.

Episode 6

Vera puts up quite a fight even thought she's up against two spellblades.  Her left hand holds a hidden basilisk eye, and she was about to petrify Nanao again.  But Nanao activates the power of her spellblade to close the distance and cut the hand before its curse could reach her.  And with that, Katie is saved and the troll is spared seeing that it's just too valuable for research to simply execute it.  Afterwards, Darius brings Oliver and company to his secret lab, and Oliver notices that Darius has been shamelessly plagiarizing his research, stealing it from bright students like Vera and presenting it as his own.  And it turns out that Darius is one of the guys involved in his mother's death with Esmeralda the one who actually stabbed her.  Oliver has really transformed his character as he's on a mission to avenge his mother, starting with Darius and he has six more targets left.

Yet another anime that could have a lot better. At least this one doesn't feel like it ended up this way out of laziness like a lot of them do. It seems like whoever wrote it just doesn't have the skill to give these characters any real depth or to make the dialogue anything beyond everyone just telling you exactly how they feel and exactly what they're going to do all the time. The best they could seem to do was make the two main characters two dimensional while everyone else is just one dimensional.

I actually thought the fact that he is there to hunt the people who killed his mother (being that they also seem to be the teachers that don't give a shit about student safety) actually made the show more interesting....but they didn't pull that twist until half-way through the season. Although...I guess this is Eminence in Shadow if the MC wasn't a goofball....and the fact that the MC in Eminence is Shadow is a goofball is what makes that show good

Yeah I think that made it better too. It's just that it gets dragged down by everything/everyone else. He and the samurai girl are ok characters, but all the rest are just awful, along with just about every bit of dialogue that comes out of their mouths. The story isn't being told in a very compelling way either.

Episode 7

And now, an episode that focuses on Pete as he has a secret even he didn't know about until just now as Pete is a Reversi, somebody who can change their sex and tap into the attributes that one sex is better at over the other.  So it's best to respect this person's choice of pronouns from now on.  Pete only found this out while sleeping, and Oliver realized that something was amiss during magic engineering class when Pete was too embarrassed by the female body that Oliver had to go in and protect Pete from the snakes that were unleashed in that time bomb.  So in light of this, Alvin and Carlos take Pete to a secret club that is specifically for Reversis, all while Pete decides to stay Oliver's roommate.  Quite the development that was for Pete as it's no wonder why Pete was not exactly the most sociable person to deal with.  So with Oliver, Nanao, Katie, and Pete all having their stories explained, there's just Guy and Michaela left.  Next time, Oliver is up against a rival who is most definitely bad news.
