Episode 38

Just like with the third season, it begins with a flashback as it is focused on Rampo.  He's quite the detective there, and it's good to see him getting some more focus here.  Not exactly the ideal way to open things up here, but seeing that it has three seasons already that it's fine to start things off like this.  In any case, the animation continues to be great as expected from Bones, and the noir-style really works out well to tell this flashback.

Episode 39

Rampo's backstory continues as he learned from Fukuzawa to be skeptical of others, and it's that mindset that has him being the brilliant detective he is.  That was quite a nice use of colors as it reflects the change in Rampo's mindset nicely.  The case has gone awry with the playwright Kurahashi murdered and the culprit Murakami is at-large.  This goes to show that Rampo was rather immature for a detective as he's supposed to take things serious like Fukuzawa was doing, but he has the special power to solve cases almost instantaneously, which is something that has been messing with his mind.  That was great to see Rampo getting more involved going to show that he's somebody who is hard to figure out.

Episode 40

And the prologue wraps up with the founding of the detective agency.  While they figured out that the play's leading actor Murakami was the culprit, he was silenced before Rampo and Fukuzawa could get answers out of him.  And the in the process, Fukuzawa makes a visito to the prison to see Oda where he learns that the mastermind behind everything that includes the playwright's murder is a secret organization known as V, as in the Roman numeral for 5 (and I have to think that there are five members in it), which Murakami was a member of.  Pretty interesting way to start things off as Rampo has been underutilized in the previous seasons.  With that, onto the main story as I eagerly anticipate what comes out of it.

Episode 41

It's now back to the present to start the Perfect Murder arc with Rampo the lead detective in this extremely sophisticated murder case seeing that Kunikida's freedom depends on getting this case solved.  For this case, he's getting help by Poe as he learns that the Rats use Cleaners to mislead the police, and one such guy falls to his death from a tower.  And then there's Mushitaro, who is pretty suspicious and has some prominent role in the murders.  So after everything that happened, Rampo deduces that the culprit murdered the author himself.  Great to see Rampo really shining here as he certainly has a smart mind and is able to see through all that smokescreen that the Rats have put up, but there's still a lot more smoke that needs to clear up before getting to the truth about all this.

I'm not sure if Rampo is trolling the bad guy or not.....

Episode 42

And the culprit is none other than Mushitaro himself, and the title of the novel the real life version was most famous for was a hint it was him.  While he killed the author, it wasn't out of malice as Rampo correctly deduced as there are bigger forces at play.  Case in point, he was crying when he choked the author to death.  So with Mushitaro detained, they at least solved that case, but then here comes the guy that figures to be the big bad of this season in Nikolai.  He disguised himself as a cop to approach Mushitaro and killed him in order to silence him, and Mushitaro gave the detective agency a warning with his final words not to accept a big-time offer that's coming their way.  Rampo sure was great there not only figuring out the killer in the absence of clear and obvious proof, but knowing why and how he felt about doing it.  In the meantime, Nikolai is one nasty trickster who's going to be a handful.

Episode 43

And this is why Mushitaro warned Rampo not to take on the next case as the Detective Agency really got themselves into hot water.  But despite Rampo having no intention of pursuing the killer, Fukuzawa decides to go through with it, and they get framed for a terrorist plot as they were all disguised in those white outfits and were in a place where the hostages were brutally killed.  Quite a bad situation everybody is in as it goes to show just how dangerous Nikolai is.

Episode 44

Pretty bad situation the Detective Agency got themselves into now that they are being hunted down by a military team known as the Hunting Dogs, but help is on the way.  Great to see the Port Mafia guys back as they are the best characters in this show.  Looking forward to seeing them bail out their rivals and recognizing the big threat that Nikolai is.

Episode 45

And now, the Agency is relying on another former enemy to help them get through this mess.  Fukuzawa made a deal with the Port Mafia to save everybody from the Hunting Dogs in exchange for one members joining the Mafia, and they want Yosano.  While the rest of the Agency got away, Dazai was arrested while Kunikida stayed behind since one of the Hunting Dogs has a sword that can extend that far that not even a helicopter that far away is safe from it.  Dazai is in a secret prison where he and Fyodor are engaging in a chess game.  And then Atsushi and Kyouko strike a deal with Francis after the Guild's leader was attacked by an assassin, which would have been bad had Kyouko not turn the sprinklers on to dampen the effects of the blood, and Margaret has been in a coma.  Atsushi strikes a deal with him in exchange for lifting Margaret out of her coma, something Yosano has the ability to do.  Seeing that the Decay of Angels is quite a big threat that these rival factions are working together seeing that these guys are masters at manipulating.

Episode 46

Now that the Agency has made a deal with the Mafia in which the Mafia helps clear out this mess in exchange for handing a member over to become a member of the Mafia, Yosano has been chosen.  She was chosen largely because of her history with Mori as a long time ago it was Yosano who treated Mori after getting wounded in war.  But seeing that she's needed to bring Margaret out of her coma that the timing is quite problematic.  Pretty much, Yosano's ability makes saving lives child's play for her, but Mori is trying to exploit her so that their soldiers can keep on fighting knowing that if they get hurt Yosano can just fix them up, whereas with the Agency, she's allowed to be herself and use her abilities the way they were meant to be used.  Mori sees her as being too just, but that's something only for Yosano to decide.

Episode 47

And the plot really thickens here as just when it looked like the Agency got the help they were looking for, they were hit with a nasty surprise.  First of all, there's Francis as he betrays them and it turns out that Margaret's life is not in any danger.  But then Yosano and the Port Mafia guys who have agreed to assist the Agency are attacked by a cloaked assassin sent by the Hunting Dogs.  This guy can control metal and Hirotsu ends up getting stabbed by it.  Then they managed to get away and into what appears to be a hidden passageway where only Port Mafia members can get in and out, and not to mention there's a bomb.  Of course, it wasn't a safe place after all since that assassin manages to sneak into the place.  As it turns out, that cloaked figure is just a metal mannequin, and Tachihara was the one controlling it as he is a spy for the Hunting Dogs.  The Agency is really backed into a corner now, and things aren't much better for the Port Mafia.  Yosano will need to think of something to get out of this mess, and fast.

Episode 48

While Yosano is dealing with a Port Mafia traitor, Atsushi and Kyouka break Mushitaro out of prison.  Mushitaro is the one who warned Rampo to not accept that job before he was silenced by Nikolai, but he was taken to prison rather than executed by him.  Then they sneak around, and with Ango around that they needed to get away as being found by him is bad news.  Or so they thought as not only did Ango find them using his power to read the memories of an object, but it turns out that Ango is on their side as he pushes the three into the sewers to shake the pursuers.  And so, the outcome of this battle hinges on finding the special page that set all this into motion as one side was used to incriminate the agency, but by writing on the other page they can be acquitted.  But to do that, they need to defeat Nikolai and the Decay of Angels in just ten days.  Lots of drama here, and it's all great.

Episode 49

And now, the Agency alliance has teamed up with the Hunting Dogs to take down one of the Decay of the Angel members, the casino owner Sigma, in an indirect way.  Sigma runs a casino in the sky and his scheme is to run the place with generous odds, and the unsuspecting customers would bring those money back home that are actually bombs.  It's a good thing nothing gets past Tachihara as his ability to manipulate metal is able to sniff it out.  Since Sigma knows where the page is that it creates a common enemy as the Agency wants to take that page out of them to write their acquittal, while the Hunting Dogs are out to take down a terrorist whose diabolical scheme will destroy the world.  And it turns out that those visitors are not ordinary tourists as they have been instructed by Sigma to take down the members of the Agency and Hunting Dogs for a bounty, and of course that money would end up killing them and a lot of others around them.  That was quite an amazing episode there, especially seeing Teruko stopping that plane filled with explosive money to show Sigma not to mess with the Hunting Dogs.  One more episode left to go.

Episode 50 (Season 4 Finale)

Just when it looked like the Detective Agency is turning the page, they fall into another one of Fyodor's traps.  The sky casino was just a diversion and it was intended to label the Agency as worldwide terrorists as the whole coin bomb plot, the accusation got shifted towards the Agency.  It turns out that it was written so that the Hunting Dogs would never be convinced that it wasn't the Agency's doing.  However, Tachihara is somehow not affected as the undercover Port Mafia member seems to be reached by the truth, all while he's still emotionally attached to the Mafia.  So from the look of things Tachihara will be the key to getting the Agency out of this mess.  Just when it looked like the Agency had the upper hand, the Decay of the Angel was one step ahead.  Atsushi saved Sigma to get the location of the page out of his mind, but a barrier was put into place to block Ango's ability.  Then Fyodor sends Sigma falling to his death to make it impossible for the Agency to find the page.  Quite a lot of drama to end this season, and the Agency is in an even bigger mess than before.

So with that, it's onto season 5 that's coming this summer as the Decay of the Angel's diabolical plot is only just beginning.

Final Thoughts

After three very good, but not quite top tier, seasons of this show, everything comes together in this season as the buildup from the first three seasons leads to this amazing season as the story writing is top-notch, the action is great, and above all the drama and intensity is unlike anything else in the prior seasons.  And while juggling around a large cast is something a show like this would typically have, all the characters were well-utilized.  Looking forward to seeing things play out in the next season as while the first three seasons were very good, it was lacking that one things to put it over the top, which this season has.
