Episode 1

After starting off with a typical spy mission, Kazuki and Rei go about their daily lives as if they are ordinary people, and then everything changes on Christmas.  On a mission that involves carrying a cake up the elevator to hide an assassin, Miri sneaks into the elevator and eats the cake.  With a kid on the battlefield, the plan goes up in smoke and it's just total chaos as Kazuki ends up having to play pretend daddy in order to keep her safe.  That was a pretty nice start there as P.A. Works delivers with the animation again, all while I like the action.  Not to mention, Miri is really cute and it was able to insert some amusing moments in what is otherwise a serious situation.

Coming in, I expected this show to be something like The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting, but here it's more action-oriented than that show about mafia guys who are tasked with caring for a cute girl who just so happens to be the daughter of a yakuza boss.  Not to mention, Miri is in the middle of the action while Yaeka pretty much stayed away from all the yakuza business.

I watched this right after Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, and had just about the opposite reaction. I can't stand the protagonists, the story doesn't grab me, and I don't care for the OST. Bleah, I'll pass.

This is shaping up to be like The Odd Couple with a hitman twist and a dash of family humor.  But why does the one guy in those pictures Miri had with her look exactly like Kazuki?  I'm presuming he left his wife and unborn kid behind because of his job, and now he's pigeonholed himself into taking care of a child himself.

Why does his pistol sound like it is suppressed without having a suppressor?

Kinda of unrealistic a little kid running around a Japanese city all alone and the police never show up...I mean, in Japan the police will question ANYTHING.

The guy in her pictures had an earing...and Kazuki doesn't seem to, but maybe he had one to fool Miri's mom in one of his schemes.

I just had a thought.  What is Miri really is Kazuki's daughter?  The synopsis states that her father is a yakuza boss, but what if the pregnant woman Kazuki left behind ended up marrying said yakuza boss later?

This already wins for the worst named show of the year. No twelve word LN name could overcome the simple crapitude of Buddy Daddies.

This really comes off like a Spy Family rip off to me. Only not as good. Even the music reminds of Spy Family.

Without the little girl this would be super generic. I'm not sure she'll be enough to make up for how boring, and stupid, everything else was.

The guy in the picture is the one they just killed. That's why she was told her father would be at that hotel.

And yeah, the gun sounds didn't make sense unless those were .22's they were firing and I'm pretty sure they weren't.

Episode 2

Those two guys sure are in quite a tight situation seeing that the cute girl they took in is the daughter of the mafia boss they just killed.  Looking for her mother sounds like a good place to start, but in any case those two have a lot on their mind seeing that Miri is very needy.  Not to mention, Miri once again waltzes right in that once again causes the mission to go awry. Those two can't exactly do their mission when they have a kid around that doesn't understand that what they are doing could get her killed.  After everything that happened, Ryo had to finish the job.  Pretty funny stuff to see just how crazy things get when a toddler enters the battlefield.  Next time, Miri meets her mother, or at least the woman they think is.

So Miri turned out to be both the source of Kazuki's inspiration for their plan to get their next target in the open and the element that threw the whole operation into chaos.  Because they couldn't hit their mark, Kyutaro had to send someone else to clean up their mess.  Let's just hope he doesn't decide to send him after Kazuki and Rei in the future.

Man... You know Spy x Family may have a wacky world, but it never tried parrying an mp5 fired full auto with a silver serving tray. Or so I think anyway. I suppose the reason the guns sound so bad is so it doesn't distract you from the part that this little girl isn't startled by bullet fire or any of the violence around her. Kids may not understand violence necessarily, but they do understand when adults are mean to them. The only time the girl gets sad or unreasonable is when she needs to go with them to piss on their plans. The show feels really silly. The guys aren't fun or interesting enough, and it's all trying to be carried by the 3 feet of deus cute machina running around. It's a miss for me.

Episode 3

Kyutaro passes on information he found out about Miri's mother, and while Kazuki goes to talk to her, Rei gets stuck with babysitting duties.  But the mother doesn't want to have anything to do with Miri, and Rei ends up having to reluctantly bond with Miri to keep some policemen from taking her away.  Geez, Rei must've had a really crappy childhood if his father wanted to raise him to be a cold-blooded killer.

Episode 3

And after two episodes and two missions that went awry thanks to Miri's sudden appearance, there's no mission this time around as it's all about bringing Miri to her mother, who is a nightclub singer.  But from the look of things Miri's parents were so abusive that she's better off with Kazuki and Rei.  Of course, the mother is denying that she has a child, and it's probably for the best that Miri doesn't see her for awhile.  As for Rei, it turns out that he used to work for a mafia with his father as the boss, and Rei's father was not somebody anybody would want to be around.  And then it ends with Miri calling Rei her father after being found by a couple of cops.

This episode goes to show that having great parents is important, and seeing that Kazuki is a nice guy while Rei experienced firsthand what bad parents can do to children when they grow up, and I have a feeling that things would not have ended well for Miri had she continued to be raised by her actual mother and father knowing just how indifferent they appear to be.

Episode 4

Next order of business is to get Miri into daycare, and while it's an easy task for a normal family, not so much for Kazuki and Rei seeing that neither of these guys are her real father, all while their backgrounds as hitman are quite problematic.  They had to go through so much paperwork, and faking a lot of information at that, to get Miri into a daycare, then they had to try and keep Miri from saying all the wrong things when looking for a place to keep her.  Then the manual of supplies she needs had them buying all sorts of stuff not realizing that ordinary clothes and stuff are what they need rather than those high-end stuff they are used to getting as she's not blending in with the kids.  Those two have a lot to learn about caring for a child, but of course it's to be expected that they would struggle given their line of work and the fact that they are single men trying to do something that's out of character for them.

Geez, do Japanese people really need to register with the national government before even searching for a daycare!?  I thought such paperwork was focused on the local level.  Either way, their professions are definitely too dubious for the guys to deal with this stuff legitimately.  And all the clothes they got Miri were so high-end that the other kids thought she was financially well-off and out of their league.  Fortunately, the guys had things set straight in the end.

Also, Miri gut-checking Kazuki with her head cracked me up.

The daddies are desperate for dough seeing that they spent quite a lot trying to get Miri into daycare.  As if not getting any jobs wasn't bad enough, the daycare is temporarily closed, meaning that Miri is in the way once again.  It's a good thing Kyutaro offered to babysit her so that Kazuki and Rei can do their jobs.  This episode goes to show that Kyutaro has a soft side, while at the same time nothing gets past him.  He knew the whole situation, but kept quiet about it to test Kazuki and Rei as he wanted to make sure that those two can still do their jobs if somebody is looking after Miri.  This show just continues to be amusing mixing in the grown men in a deadly profession with plenty of cute girl antics.

Episode 6

It's a field trip to the zoo, and after hearing that Miri got into a fight with Taiga, that had the daddies worried.  And then Miri forgets her lunch, but it's a good thing that Kazuki and Rei tried so hard to hand Miri her lunch seeing that there was a convenience store robber on the loose and has infiltrated the zoo.   And when he threatens the group of kids Miri and Taiga are part of, in comes Kazuki and Rei to the rescue wearing mascot costumes to save the day.  Pretty silly and amusing episode as just when it looked like it was going to be another crazy adventure over something as petty as a forgotten lunch, things might not have ended well had they stayed away as they were told to do.  And about that fight between Miri and Taiga, that was all just an accident as in truth they are great friends seeing that they are both Morio Kart enthusiasts.

Ah yes, the troubles of adults involved in preschoolers' lives, such as parents and teachers overreacting over what ends up being a misunderstanding.  At least things got cleared up before they got out of hand, and Kazuki and Rei helped put a robber in jail.  Kazuki really wants to make this parenting shtick work, so this probably won't be the last overreaction he has.  Meanwhile, it seems a woman from Kyutaro's past has showed up at his cafe.

I don't think that has been said, remember he asks Kyu-chan to send parts of his contract money to "the usual place". I think Kyu-chan said something like "she refuses to take it" or something. I thought it was implied he left them in order to keep them from being targeted.

Those envelopes need more context. "She" could very well be his mother-in-law.

The way Kazuki talks about his wife and child are all very much past tense. There is no wishful thinking that he'd like to see them again, as if they were still alive so that he could.

Episode 7

Here comes Karin, and it turns out Karin is the sister of Kazuki's late wife Yuzuko.  Yuzuko was killed by accident during one of his missions five years ago, and seeing Miri lose an umbrella that was destroyed by a truck was a painful reminder of that.  Kazuki had been putting up a cheerful front in order to try and get over that tragic incident seeing that he indirectly had a hand in killing her.  But sister-in-law is a lot smarter than she looks and by visiting the spot they first met, Kazuki is over it.  All this meant Rei had to take care of Miri and he's absolutely clueless as to how to be a father seeing that he took Miri to see Kyutaro.  Nevertheless, it was great to see Kazuki confronting the past seeing that sooner or later, he will need to deal with it.  And at the very least Karin isn't holding Kazuki liable, and it would help if Miri got to meet her aunt.

Episode 8

After Kazuki's background was explained, this episode explains Rei's as unlike with Kazuki, Rei was raised in a strict environment and doesn't get along with his father.  Rei is called back to the main house, and being the heir to the Suwa family that he has some pretty big responsibilities.  So Suwa has a big decision to either return to his family or go back to his current life and be branded a traitor.  But before that, Rei is tasked with assassinating a traitor to the Suwa family, who just so happens to be his former master.  And after he fell to his death, Rei thought long and hard, and in the end he decides to stick with Kazuki seeing that he's doing it for Miri's sake more than anything.  The Suwa family sure is cold-hearted as they train their kids to not have emotions and stuff, and now Kazuki is about to become a target seeing that Rei's dad will do anything to to make sure he stays with the family, and Kazuki is the biggest obstacle to that.

I had a feeling Kazuki and Miri did all that preparation because it was Rei's birthday.  But now Rei's dad wants him to take over the family business of assassination, and Rei has to kill his former mentor.  If the reason he was marked was because he had a family of his own, how is Rei supposed to carry on the family bloodline in the future?

Oh no.  Speaking of being marked, Rei's dad now knows about Miri!

It's field day at the day care, and Rei sure is into it seeing that he sets up a barricade to secure the best spot at the event, which of course is just stupid.  And so the event goes off and while Miri has her fair share of stumbles, it was the scavenger hunt where she really came through, needing to find family that's a role Rei fulfills.  She won a medal for that event, and it was a good time to be had.  Looks like things are about to turn serious as Ogino, who figures to be the main villain in this show, has arrived and has his sights set on Kazuki and family.

Misaki has returned, and the last time Kazuki and Rei met them she couldn't even stand the sight of her daughter.  But now she has changed and it turns out that she doesn't have much longer to live with cancer taking over her throat, so she wants to spend as much time as she can to be with Miri.  It turns out that Ogino is none too pleased that their job performance has suffered since adopting Miri, and Kyutaro contacted Misaki to take Miri back.  So after thinking it over, the two decide to return Miri to her mother after one last day of fun together.  It was a tough decision for those two, but all they want to do is what's best for Miri, and at the very least Misaki has wised up now that she's out of a job and doesn't have much time left to live.  With the way I'm seeing things, Ogino will be coming after those two and he ordered them to give up the kid so that they don't get her involved when they fight each other in the end seeing that Ogino is somebody who will snuff out any signs of rebellion before it begins.

NOW Miri's mother shows up, but that bombshell she dropped changes her whole outlook on what really matters.  And it turns out it was a matter of duress, as Ryo's pressure proves too great to ignore any longer.  But I don't think simply relinquishing care of Miri to her mother is going to appease Ryo, or Rei's dad for that matter.  For all we know, Miri leaving with her mother is the opportunity Ryo has to go after them.

Episode 11

I had a feeling that while Kazuki and Rei were done with Miri that Shigeki and Ogino were not, and while Rei decided to return, his father is still intent on getting rid of Miri as he's doing so to remove a needless distraction.  As such, there was no way Rei was going to go back and Ogino comes after Miri.  It's a good thing Misaki hid Miri where she wouldn't know about what would transpire.  So in the end, Misaki was killed by Ogino, and Ogino got away when the police arrived, and Miri her daddies are taking refuge at Kyutaro's home.  That's when Kazuki and Rei decide to quit the hitman business and become fulltime parents.  I knew that Miri would be back, and it just goes to show what awful human beings Ogino and Rei's father are, and for Rei to be raised by somebody so heartless was something he didn't deserve.  One more episode left as Kazuki and Rei settle the score with the organization once and for all.

I knew it: Rei's dad would only accept Miri and her mother's deaths as a suitable resolution!  Does he even care about Rei, his own son, possibly continuing the family bloodline at all!?  Kazuki managed to keep Miri from being killed, but it was too late to save Misaki.  So now Kazuki and Rei are acting in open defiance on their employers.

Oh god, I just thought of something.  What if Yuzuko being at that spot when she died was no coincidence?  What if Rei's dad and Ryo set things up so she would be there when that explosion happened?

Kazuki must be the worst assassin in the history of bad assassins...he had the drop on that "last words" guy at least 3 times and failed to pull the trigger even once.

I mean...Rei and Kazuki know they have to kill both Rei's father and "last words" guy right? This show will be a failure to me if either of them is left breathing at the end.

Episode 12 (Finale)

Now that Kazuki and Rei have decided to put down their guns for good to become full-time papas, there's just one more order of business left to deal with after dropping Miri off at school for the Christmas party.   They just can't submit their resignation and leave as the organization will come after them and make sure they pay for betraying them.  So they storm the organization that ends with Kazuki and Rei fighting Ogino and burning him to a crisp after stabbing him in the neck, and Rei going as far as to shoot his arm to make him useless as an assassin to show that he's not coming back.  And afterwards, Kazuki and Rei open their own diner and it ends with a time skip in which Miri is now starting high school.  Quite a nice way to end things even if it was predictable that it would end with a climactic showdown with Ogino and Rei saying farewell to his good-for-nothing father.  They certainly learned quite a lot being daddies seeing that they realized that being hitmen just wasn't what they were meant to do.

Final Thoughts

This show does a nice job in mixing action and slice-of-life, and while the show borrows a lot of elements from Spy x Family, it does a much better job in maintaining the focus of the story and doing so in a creative way, albeit without the complexity and depth that show has.  The animation is another great job by P.A. Works, the show has nice soundtrack, and above all it has great characters.  That said, this show isn't perfect as the show's plot is pretty shallow and largely predictable, and the storytelling could have been a bit better.  But aside from that, it's a show that stands out in a great way as character growth was on display in the end.

Man, that was quite the way to go out.  Although, I think Kazuki may have missed a chance to turn Ryo's own philosophy against him ("What are your last words!?") before that dagger plunged straight through his neck.  So now Kazuki and Rei are out of the hitman business, but I actually would have liked the story to continue on from here.

LOL again, Rei had the drop on Ogata, but instead of pulling the trigger yelled his name...these are 2 of the worst assassins...

I'm glad they at least killed Ogata, but leaving Rei's father alive was just dumb...just hoping he would let you go after all that is dumb, it's not just betting your life, it's also betting Miri's.

I think this show could have been an easy 8...but there were too many stupid decisions made.
