Plot Summary

When gamer Anzu gets transported to a world of hot guys, it’s like she’s in a dream…someone else’s dream!

High schooler Anzu Hoshino has a great life. Every day she plays video games, pigs out on snacks, and pets her beloved cat. But this blissful existence is turned into a confusing mess when a magical creature transports her to an altered reality bereft of her favorite things. Now she’s stuck with hot guys instead! How can she possibly survive in such an awful world?!

Anzu must play along in this altered reality before she can return to her normal life, so she begrudgingly makes friends with Tsukasa Kazuki. He unfortunately happens to be one of the hottest and most popular guys at school, and what’s worse, she realizes that he might not even be that bad of a person!

Read vol.1 of the manga, and it's got a lot of charm. Eager to see if a relatively inexperienced studio can pull this off...

Well I'd rather have this than the infamous 2-3 week "Komi Delay."

But yeah, so much for weekly discussion, eh? Sigh. I'll still share my thoughts once I have a chance to binge it.

At least the Komi Delay is better than the Detective Conan delay as that's what used to happen with almost all Netflix shows that aired on TV first. With this show, it's a worldwide premiere, and usually such shows will get a TV broadcast in a future season like what Record of Ragnarok is getting this season. Anyway, I like that more Netflix shows are being released like this than with what is happening with Komi Can't Communicate or what's happening to the two Detective Conan spinoffs.

Not to mention Summer Time Rendering which for all we know Disney + may never release outside of Japan.

That show ended a month ago, and the first episodes were over 6 months ago.

That should have easily been voted the best show of either Spring or Summer, but apparently too many people didn't want to sail the high seas to see that it was clearly one of the best shows of 2022

OK, 3 episodes and it's holding my interest. The production values aren't anything to write home about, but it reminds me a little of Love After World Domination in that it's more than the sum of its parts, and I'm eager to see how Anzu is going to navigate her minefield of hot guys. Not all the jokes land, but the pacing is pretty rapid fire and the show doesn't dwell on any one for too long.

Need a little more focus on the various Anzu Faces, which are a highlight of the manga. 7.5/10 so far.

Probably they will release it after Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall. But yeah Disney is the worst thing that happened for anime.

Only watched one episode so far. Relatability is a bit scary. 0.0

Not too fond of the comic delivery. But Umehara voicing Mr. Ikemen?! \(^.^)/ That now makes 7 roles this season.

In the "choosing video games, chocolate and a cat over romantic companionship" department? Or otherwise? ;)

Yeah everything is super over the top. I don't like the varying line weights in the art, either. But I have to say, for a no-name studio's (presumed) first big project, they're doing a great job. The direction in particular stands out. They could have chosen flat angles for everything, but the dynamic shots and editing really make it feel all-of-a-piece.

Hoping they give the male MCs a little more personality than your average potato-kun. I'm 5 eps. in and no sign of it so far.

Daily logins (1376, 764, 282 and 239 days) — check
Salted caramel hot chocolate on tap — check
Cat fed and rolling around on the floor — check
(Not sure if I should admit the pattern on my date calendar somehow counters in-game events.)

That's too bad there's no substance to the guys in the anime.

Gotten a few laughs from me so far. Her VA's doing a great job.

I might be talked out of chocolate but the cat would be non-negotiable.

Up to ep.9 now. Still decent but the plot is spinning its wheels somewhat, like the writer(s) ran out of ideas after the initial setup. Anzu is fun but the supporting cast leaves a lot to be desired. Still hanging in at a 7/10; the direction and (most of the) animation remain impressive for a no-name studio.

Finished it last night. Meh. As above, it started with an interesting premise but then just kind of morphed into a generic romcom. Anzu was consistently great, but her would-be suitors were just generic potato-kuns with zero personality all the way through. Even the injection of some late series dramatic stakes didn't really help liven up the proceedings. Also, why Junta continues to live with Anzu, and Hijiri's whole purpose remain a mystery.

Part of what made the initial few episodes work so well were A) watching the circumstances unfold to get Anzu and Tsukasa in the same house together and B) watching them spend time together doing non-romcommy things like playing board games. Now that Anzu has her "3 greatest desires" back AND Tsukasa and Junta know what the arrangement is with Riri, all the tension has been removed from the plot. It would be interesting to see if a S2 can build on where the plot now stands, but the raw materials it has to work with aren't promising.

6.5/10 overall, rounded up to 7/10 for MAL.

Its premiere was also offset relative by 3-4 weeks to the rest of the season so it missed the big ANN season preview, and Netflix (in their infinite wisdom) dropped all the episodes, sub and dub, at once. So it's missed the weekly reviews also.

Nice of ANN to do a whole feature on the show:

That's disappointing. I dropped off around ep 7 because it was getting worse with each new suitor. Which is a typical romcom problem. It would have been better if it just stuck with one love interest instead of trying to spread it out so everyone got less development.

Anzu was the highlight of the show. Unfortunately, everyone else is paper thin.

I mean, it wasn't terrible, but as far as an inversion of a typical romcom formula, I think we're all a little (a lot?) spoiled by how sharp Kaguya-sama has consistently been for 3 seasons and counting. It's like having Led Zeppelin or the Beatles open for your garage band. As mentioned, the first half-dozen episodes were good, but then they watered it down by explaining Riri's involvement in creating Anzu's reverse harem as just a series of coincidences and introducing the really overwrought late series drama.

Also I couldn't help thinking of Zoolander every time Kazuki's situation was featured. The perils of "being really really really ridiculously good-looking." Lol.

Yes, it was kind of ridiculous that he's so good looking he's been traumatized by women coming on to him. I assume he has a crazy ex by the foreshadowing.

Riri become too much when she took human form.

That was fun, a little too serious at the end there. And probably a food place to end it as Riri being revealed seems like it will derail the whole plot. Have to agree the beginning was much better as the second half just turned into a "Anzu is the greatest friend ever" showcase ( though not sure how great she could be if she spent zero time with anyone outside of school). It's like it become more a 'how can Anzu help people' instead of 'how can Anzu find romance' like the premise (the rich kid seemed to be there specifically to be helped or his butler be a deus ex machina when needed).
Not sure why the desciption makes it sound like an isekai. Wouldn't mind a second season IF it focused on romance, though I would also be curious in a series about the other wizard's impossible task of getting someone to fall for the stalker. LOL.

I just finished this tonight. I thought it was quite a bit better than most of the rom-com crap we usually get, except for the aforementioned Kaguya and Dangers in My Heart and the similar (Rie Takahashi associated) Tomo-Chan Is a Girl.
Kind of like a gender reversed Love Tyrant.

The rich kid was completely unneeded. They could have found a better way to resolve the stalker situation...and they basically did considering what Riri did.

I think it would have been great if Anzu fell for someone like Makoto who is supposedly ordinary instead of the good looking guys, but looks like Saki may have fallen for him and that would be a good storyline in season 2

Completely agree. He was like nails on a chalkboard whenever he was on screen.

I've got the first volume of the manga; somehow I just can't quite bring myself to spring for the next ones (I think they've translated up to vol.4/5). Doesn't help that it's a large-format, full color series, so it's $17 a pop...
