i wanna ask, is johan dead or not? i think he isn t in the fact that in the last seconds of ep 74 there was nothing in the bed, but i ve heard some people that say he is dead. so, is he dead or not?

Its up to the watcher to decide whether Johan is dead or not.
Johan heard that his Mother loves him and his real name.
So after that either he escaped or killed himself.
I think he killed himself.

Dude got shot in the head twice and survived, at this point nothing can kill him lol. Fo real though no you see at the end of the anime he's alive

I think he died on the operating table. The last conversation seems like a hallucination. Plus there is no one guarding him even though he is a highly dangerous serial killer.

Basically Johan is in many ways an idea. He is the nihilism that exists in every character and they all desperately try to deny. The end basically consists of Tenma not having to kill Johan and thus not having to truly see if Johan is correct or not. Johan leaving the hospital because he is no longer directly in Tenma's head he has gone back to being a subconscious worry. It's pretty much a horror ending, it's like if you have a movie about someone who thinks there is a monster under the bed, he checks to see if there is a monster and there isn't so he tells himself he is safe and the movie ends. We never understand if there ever was a monster there in the first place, it's a purposefully unsatisfying ending. So if you asked if Johan is dead or not my response is that he is still alive he just isn't there anymore.

It’s up to the viewer’s interpretation. He could:

a) Have killed himself
b) Have escaped to continue his killing spree
c) Have escaped and dropped off the grid

I think c) was confirmed in the bonus story light novel or something, but I prefer to take the anime/manga on its own, especially since I think the open ending is far better.

Johan not being in the bed symbolises that his mission or intension is completed and he does not have much to do now

I think Johan survived and thus completed perfect suicide,that is that he is alive but nobody is talking about him or knows his real name.

it’s up for the audience to interpret, that’s what makes it so brilliant and one of the reasons why it’s my favorite anime, people think he’s dead because they interpreted that he killed himself but when I first saw it I thought he escaped again.

I'm pretty sure johan hated his mother and just before johan disappeared tenma had visited the mum. So my interpretation is johan escaped the hospital to find his mum and kill her

See many will despise but monster had a very bad ending ,bvery bad . I know it left for the fans to speculate but I still think there should have been more details and I really wanted to know how JOhan carried out his plans .Monster did reverse of show don't tell.
