No Game No Life is a surreal comedy that follows Sora and Shiro, shut-in NEET siblings and the online gamer duo behind the legendary username "Blank." They view the real world as just another lousy game; however, a strange e-mail challenging them to a chess match changes everything—the brother and sister are plunged into an otherworldly realm where they meet Tet, the God of Games.

The mysterious god welcomes Sora and Shiro to Disboard, a world where all forms of conflict—from petty squabbles to the fate of whole countries—are settled not through war, but by way of high-stake games. This system works thanks to a fundamental rule wherein each party must wager something they deem to be of equal value to the other party's wager. In this strange land where the very idea of humanity is reduced to child's play, the indifferent genius gamer duo of Sora and Shiro have finally found a real reason to keep playing games: to unite the sixteen races of Disboard, defeat Tet, and become the gods of this new, gaming-is-everything world.

This show's pretty polarizing, actually. I personally love it but I can see why it's not for everybody.

It has been dubbed the "Justin Beiber of Anime" before, after all. >_>

I'll be posting the easter eggs/ references in the show as we go along here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c03A1OaEu6TTs_hJ7mR5pSKfAjv0-uMaN7Q68yIaoBY/edit#

So I have seen stills and gifs of this anime. The aesthetic seems really interesting, maybe a little too "sugary-sweet" for me, but maybe my thoughts will change.

I'm still not sure what the actual premise is and I'm okay with walking in blind. We'll see how this goes.

I really hope they don't lewd the loli.

I love both sub and dub of this show. The dub a little more bc all of the godly references in the inbetween previews and shit, but all voices are good overall. Can't wait to see the technicolor world play with Cave's minds tho! Upupupu!!!

1. All murder, war, and robbery is forbidden in this world.

2.All conflict in this world will be resolved through games.

3. In games, each player will bet something that they agree is of equal value.

4. As long as it doesn't violate pledge three, anything may be bet, and any game may be played.

5. The challenged party has the right to decide the rules of the game.

6. Any bets made in accordance with the pledges must be upheld.

7.Conflicts between groups will be conducted by designated representatives with absolute authority.

8. Being caught cheating during a game is grounds for an instant loss.

9. In the name of god, the previous rules may never be changed.

10. Let's all have fun and play together!

3 Episodes In.

Good fun so far. Beautiful aesthetic and animation. Good shot composition as well. The world and characters don't feel as fleshed out as I would want them to be but I'll see what I think by the end.

I've already seen this show and I loved it the first time, and watching it again is reminding me of how much I really liked it. I don't normally rewatch anime unless its short and really good. Like I would not watch Naruto all over again, but I did like it.

Anyways, I don't want to mention too many spoilers for those who check this board before the stream is over. I will say that Jibril is my favorite character, though I like a lot of them.

I will also concede to InducedPhobia that the anime doesn't go into as much detail with some characters as it could. I feel that it does develop the characters, just really fast and to the point. Though I feel this is alright for a 12 episode anime with a lot of characters to introduce. The main cast receives some development throughout so thats good.

I like the art style in this anime and the opening is AMAZING! I think my favorite game in the show was Materialization Shiritori. When you guys finish the anime, you will know the one I am talking about.

I'm excited to see what other's think of this show and I am happy that this club was started so that we can all share in our love of anime together.

Captain's Log: Episode 5

The show's art, animation, music, and characters have been amazing so far.
Things somehow keep escalating. And the show hasn't had a moment that has bored me yet.

About to head deeper into this wild ride, and I'll talk more about things later.

Final thoughts.

I didn't really get the show until episode 4. When Sora says "Thanks for bringing us to this world, this is where we belong" I think I was able to understand, vibe with, and ultimately have fun with the show.

The writing and characterization isn't very appealing to me but I cannot deny the amount of fun I had with the scenarios, humor, and visuals. It was definitely a fun romp.

4th time to watch this series again and, per usual, it was a fun ride! I had fun listing down all the references, though I'm pretty sure I still missed one or two there.

Steph is still best girl, Chlammy/Fi is still OTP and Konomi Suzuki's iconic OP is still hype af. Rewatching this show with the NyanCave community that is finally not something DR related (though the DR references still popped up in chat XD) was a fun thing to do and I can't wait to do it again tomorrow. :D

Yeah, I was kind of trying to make that point while I was watching the stream. To me, the enjoyment factor from this show comes from the "wacky" situations the characters get into, the amazing animation, and the jokes/references. I feel its a very self-aware anime and that it doesn't take itself too seriously, it just wants to take us on a wild ride, and I think it delivers.

PS I am still wearing my Jibril shirt.

Time for my "a-bit-too-late-because-I-didn't-feel-like-writing-at-3am-but-who-cares" final thoughts...

I really enjoyed this...
The animation was great and I really liked the artstyle... not to mention that the OST was also great.

The characters were good... and while I would have loved to get to know them a bit better, there is not a lot that you can do in 12 episodes...
Also the Sora and Shiro never felt too OP... the situations they were put in were so ridiculous that they needed to use every bit of their brain, as Kurami said: "Every single one of your victories have been a close call".

Talking of the situations they were put into... I enjoyed all of the games... and even though this is the type of show were you should expect the protags to win, I found myself at the edge of my seat at moments, not because I thought they were going to lose... but because of how they were going to win.
I feel like in these types of shows the most important thing is not "where we are going" but "how we are going to get there".
And even though I say this... I have to admit that the end of Episode 9 threw me off balance... those ending credits scared the shit out of me...

So yeah... that's about it... I enjoyed the animation, characters, humour, music and the story to some degree...

So yeah!
...
...I... I really don't know how to end this post... so uh...

With upcoming Overlord S2, I highly doubt this statement.

People keep saying this when Madhouse has done plenty of sequels. Hunter x Hunter, Chihayafuru, Black Lagoon, and Kaiji had sequels, just to name a few.

There are still a whole shit ton of anime that have not had sequels that need them I wasn't saying that they never do sequels they just do it very rarely since they are making other great shows

I definitely agree that there are so many good anime that deserve sequels!

I think the issue with sequels comes down to the reason the anime was made in the first place. (Making it more of a publisher issue than a studio one) NGNL was made to promote the light novel, so it's understandable that it would end of such a BRUTAL cliffhanger without a follow up anime.

While there is no news for season 2 at this point, the fact that a movie came out gives me hope for more anime down the line!

If you guys liked NGNL and need a similar fix, I might also recommend Hunter x Hunter, or Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo? (Mondaiji is based on a Light Novel, and one of those shows that "Should have a Sequel but probably never will" so beware!)

Overall, my favorite aspect of this show is how over the top it is. The genre aware protags are also really interesting to me. NGNL should definitely not be taken too seriously, and as long as you're in the right mind set, it's a lot of fun to watch!

When I think about various otaku / game situations that you could put Shiro and Sora into I get really excited... Maybe, just maybe if I like the movie I'll check out the novels. =3

Clearly, there are so many anime that we want sequels of but do not necessarily need. The blame shouldn't be put to Madhouse, to the production committees however.
