I know I'm already late for this, over 5-8 years late, but I really want to know. In this scene, Inuyasha said he wanted to live with Kikyou as a human in episode 147-148. However this is never portray in the manga which does not make it canon.

The ensuing problem is the fact in both the manga and anime, it is confirmed both from Kikyou and Inuyasha that they wanted to live together. Does this legitimatize the boat scene or just the artist portrayal of something similar that happen in the manga which we will never know of?

P.S. another question: Anime shows Kikyou and Inuyasha spent quite some time, but because this is never shown in the manga, we don't know. Anyone wager a guess?

Haven't read the manga but it could be a slight rewrite, it's not like the anime is unofficial so I don't really see the content just being not canon due to not originating from the source (manga).

As you said though, it was stated in the manga just a different point evidently. So it is likely that the anime took a slightly different course at some point and couldn't squeeze it in and decided to put in this episode special depicting Inuyasha & Kikyo.

Well, they seem to have quite a bit of time in the past according to the anime, that's what their whole dilemma originates from.

I guess you could always just say the storyline is separated from the manga at points such as these, but I still would look at it as canon.
