What is going on with that? Ajin is a 2016 anime that started last week and Ajin: Shoudou part 1 is a movie. Is the anime the same as the movie just in shorter 20 minute installments and the movie/s will cover more (as in like 4 or 5 episodes to a movie)? Or are the movies a different story with the same characters? I watched the first episode of the 2016 anime and loved it but I am curious about the movie. If I watch it, will I get ahead in the story? Thanks a huge amount to anyone who can help me and tell me what to do - I really want to watch Ajin but I am so confused about this.

They're the same. The first episode is exactly the first 20 minutes of Part 1 Movie so yes, you will get ahead into the story if you watch the movie.
