Ending Question (No spoilers please)

I would like to start watching the Spice and Wolf series but I have a question about the ending of this season. Does the anime series end with closure or does it sort of just end abruptly? If it ends abruptly with little closure were do I pick up from the light novel?

The anime ends where volume 5 of the 17-volume light novels ends. The anime ending sees them decide to continue their journey, with hints that their relationship will end up getting where people want it to, but it's still not the ending of the story. It's a fairly strong ending for this type of romance anime regardless, but if you don't plan on continuing in the light novels you may be underwhelmed.

Note that the anime skips volume 4, so if you're going to continue I would actually recommend at least reading volumes 4 onward (including 5), if not just going ahead and reading the first three volumes as well. As noted elsewhere, 3 of the 17 volumes consist of "side stories" like the two OVAs and further tales of some of the major side characters.
