ok then well I was surprised to see this wasnt here so if your new to manga and anime you'll probably be wondering what is echhii and slice of life well here is where we need experienced readers to tell others what are the different generes and what they ensue. we dont want anyone reading something that they dont like (you know what I mean).

I think the only genre I wasn't sure about was (what was it called again...) smut.

Apparently, it's a genre directed at the female audience that deals with sex.

smut ftw :)

It's pretty much shoujo, but they actually DO stuff. It's not as "innocent", but its not really explicit either. Like expect boobage every now and then and sometimes indications of sex but its not as graphic as hentai would be :x

What I don't get is the word smex. Does it stand for something?

i googled it
"Smex" is used in fangirl circles as a cooler sounding variant to "sex." It can also mean: hot, sexy, cute, cool.

Other meanings vary on use. Be sure to check the context; it could be for example smooth&sexy combined...or kind of like smutty and sexy smooshed together or in "I so wanna smex him" it could be a combination of smack and sex...

Lol, it's not a genre. It's just a word the people in my anime club came up with to replace something else.

True, but it seemed as a funny thing to ask at the time.

harem is a genre where one male lead is surrounded by numerous female characters who, despite their actions, eventually somehow fall in love with the male character. He may be aware of it, but usually isn't, and the setting usually involves the male character somehow living in very close proximity with the female characters, or going to the same school together.

josei is the targeted audience of the manga, in this case adult women.

manhua is Chinese manga

manwha is Korean manga

mecha is a genre involving mechas (for example, big robots that can be piloted)

seinen is the targeted audience of the manga, in this case adult men.

shoujo-ai and shounen-ai -> shoujo means girl, shounen means boy, ai means love. It refers to loving the same gender, but is usually not as explicit as yaoi and yuri.
