(I'll try to keep this short as possible lol) Advance thanks

I got into anime through Cowboy bebop, then Death Note, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy, Neon Evangelion then the masterful Monster.

After watching Monster I realized how good animes really can be. I mean Monster was epic, so good even that HBO are in process of making it into a live action show like Game of Thrones (how often does that happen?). I want to enjoy more shows like Monster, Master Keaton, Ergo Proxy, GITS, Death Note and Evangeion (last episodes and rebuild) as I loved the adult themes and tone. I love scifi, suspense, thrillers

When I say I like adult, I wish there were more animes like Monster.... I cant stand the screeching girl / big breasts Bull Sht in mosts animes, I want real adult tone stories, shows that make you think and talk afterwards.
I have asked on other forums for adult anime and have been given anime recommendations that I DIDINT like or were average such as Darker than Black, Black Butler, Last Exile, Elfin Leid...

I have had to resort to reading manga to sate my desire for good adult story such as Pluto and 20th Century boys. But i really would like to watch more genuely good Adult Anime's

Shows I love: Cowboy bebop, then Death Note, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy, Neon Evangelion, Mushishi, Paprika, Master Keaton, Full Metal Alchemist (giulty pleasure lol , had lots of silly childishness but did have a great adult story too).

Shows that were average: Elfin Lied, Last Exile, Black Butler, Beserk,

Really terrible: Darker than Black,

Shows yet to watch but that I've been recommended (can someone let me know if any these will be worth my time considering what I like and what I hate and also recommended other shows not in this list):

Blood+
Thunder Cats (new version)
Blade of the immortal
Rivers edge
Mouryou no Hako
Paranoia agent
DETECTIVE CONAN
Yu YU hakusho
Trigun
Helter skelter:
Witch Hunter Robin,
Serial experiaments Lain,
Baccanno,
Bogiepop phantom

Thanks so much for reading hopefully there is someone who gets where i'm coming from and can help me watch a good anime especially as I am in the throes of 'Naoki Urasawa's Monster withdrawal symptoms lol

I hate to be the stick in the mud on this one, but HBO isn't actually making Monster. They were considering it, but Del Toro's demands are way too ridiculous. It isnt going to happen.

Also, on topic of recommendations, I recommend Blast of Tempest.

It is a modern interpretation of shakespear with some pretty good action and animation + philosophical undertones.

Baccano and Lain are the ones you should go with on that list first first imo. YYH is a classic shounen but it doesn't fit your description. And the anime adaptation of Blade of the Immortal doesn't do the manga justice. Also check out Gankutsuou, it loosely adapts The Mount of Conte Cristo and it's filled with great HBOish characters and suspense. Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin as well.

He said he didn't want the poorly written kawaii fanservice, so Zetsuen no Tempest is out by default.

I would suggest:

Shinsekai Yori
Texhnolyze

Any nudity in these is to portray a purpose, not for user entertainment. They are dark, gritty, graphic, and well written masterpieces.

While I love Serial Experiments Lain and Baccano! to death, Lain isn't near HBO, more like AMC. Baccano! has borderline HBO moments, but the level of fanservice and dumb humor tends to negate the level of seriousness in the show.

I suggest Shinsekai Yori because it truly does delve into multiple facets of humanity: spirituality, consciousness, jealousy, sex, war, power, fear, social control mechanisms, slavery, racism... It truly is a work of art.

Texhnolyze is an older anime, and if you are used to modern anime with recent anime techniques you will take time to become acclimated, but to say it's worth it would be an understatement. Only Texhnolyze can have such a monstrous storyline, touching on many social issues I included above and have one of the best resolutions in anime history.

Both of these things share one thing in common: they have narrative pacing. If you don't feel drawn in from the start, you aren't supposed to. It sets the scene, explains complex parts of the world, and then begins the rising action. You are not supposed to be instantly drawn in like No Game No Life, Death Note, and then some. Watch it all the way through.

By the way, HBO is the very definition of fan service.

I don't think HBO does nudity for no reason all of the time. Most of the shows I've watched with sex scenes and nudity had an underlying purpose. If you mean shows like Carnivale and Game of Thrones, I would say those are the exceptions, not the rule.

As for ZnT being fanservice:

The bath scene
When she's teleported from the skeleton
and more...

Thanks so much for quick replies I didn't expect that! thanks Crimefridge you seem to have hit the nail on the head in terms of what i might like, definitely not into fanservice. Love your clarification between HBO and AMC by the way :)... I will definitely check out Texhnolyze and Shinsekai Yori...I wont bother posting again until I've watched those two :)

There is no fan service in ZnT aside from the lead female being physically attractive.

Considering every show on HBO features extreme amounts of sexual fan service, I dont see the problem.

Ah, good! We have the same definition of "mature", which doesn't just mean "hentai" or "lots of bewbs" in this case.

Anime:
Area 88 OVA
Armored Trooper VOTOMs
Armor Hunter Mellowlink
Bokurano
Cyber City Oedo 808
Flag
Freedom Project
Himitsu
Infinite Ryvius (aka lord of the flies in space)
Key the Metal Idol
Kino's Journey
Kuuchuu Buranko
Millennium Actress
Mobile Police Patlabor
Princess Tutu (despite the terrible name, absolutely treats the audience with respect and is a damn good show)
RahXephon
Rose of Versailles
Terra e...
Time of Eve
Twelve Kingdoms

Manga (if you're willing to "resort" to manga, otherwise you're missing a lot)
Afterschool Charisma
Afterschool nightmare
Banana Fish my favorite manga ever, and the action is so clear I practically feel like I'm watching an anime when I read it
Basara
Black Jack (really, most Tezuka seinen)
Buddha
Bokurano
Drunken Dream and other stories
Hikaru no Go
Ikigami
Message to Adolf
MW
Ode to Kirhito
Ooku
Parasyte
Phoenix
Planetes
Real
Sanctuary
Threads of Time (manhwa)
Twin Spica
Uzumaki (very creepy)

Tastes differ after all. I liked DtB way more compared to EL. And Black Butler is no way "adult anime" - they fooled you damn hard. Well, as for your list:

Blood+ - that one is boring like hell. Has some plot and characters improvement but..I personally didn't like it. Nothing really special
Thunder Cats (new version) - isn't that american cartoon? not common with that stuff
Blade of the immorta - average samurai actionl
Rivers edge - thats a movie from "86, right?
Mouryou no Hako - if you want mystery with bishounens. Not a bad one, really. Neither can be called best
Paranoia agent - good brain killer, from same director who made Paprika and Perfect Blue.
DETECTIVE CONAN - childish art and some cases are simple and silly. If you want to relax without thinking too hard and have some detective story with lulz and such - thats a good option
Yu YU hakusho - haven't seen it, so can't help
Trigun - mostly a comedy with guy crashing everything with good intentions. Won't call it very adult but its still very interesting and fun show
Helter skelter - japanese horror? I liked Chakushin ari and Gosa (Death Bell) more even have same ringtone which is used in Chakushin ari :3
Witch Hunter Robin - was lame...idk maybe thats just me but I couldn't find it very interesting or impressive
Serial experiaments Lain - some brain work about net..kinda have some similar feelings with GiTS
Baccanno - takes alot of attention to understand whats going on and the real story behind all those small parts you see with no order. After last episode when you see whole picture anime gives feeling its actually very well done
Bogiepop phantom - planning to watch it myself yet

As for adding something new (won't comment to avoid spoilers):
Black Lagoon
Gallery Fake
Golgo 13
Kaiji
NHK ni Youkoso!
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin
Shigurui
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Zipang

The Coil seems to be for kids but I enjoyed it.

I didn't suggest Dennou Coil because I don't classify that as "HBO" as the OP suggested. It's good, but I rarely recommend it because most people seem to dislike it for some reason. Despite it being my favorite anime series.

Foreward warning this is a llittle rant...

Okay quick posts, wow some great recommendations here...Glad I posted :) I forgot to mention that I suffered Code Geass (I'm the type of person who has to finish what I start lol).

Code Geass was so drawn out at times with big buld ups to battles. It tried to be like Death Note but it still was very childish compared to it!

I guess when I say I like animes that are like HBO shows I'm looking for something that doesn't remind me that I went to high school all the time.

I like Death Note and FMA both with teenage characters but theses shows had more than teenage protagonists. But they also were written in grown up story lines.

How I got annoyed with Code Geass when his only concern was being discovered at high-school. how can you go from being a bad ass mega mind to worrying about how you will be discovered at your high-school pupil meetings...this at times seemed so silly...

I got nothing against kids in shows but all the top adult mature shows deal with "kids" in a much more grown up realistic manner...wish broadcasters would produce more adult animes for older people like me who want to engage their brain.

rant over lol

I am currently waiting for Shinsekai Yori, cant wait to watch it....

Wow, I was looking for some new mature anime to watch, but before asking I found your entry. I wanted to ask for something based on almost exactly the same things as on your "love list". I hadn't seen Master Keaton yet and after a few episodes I have to say it's great, so thank you for that.

The only thing my list would have added is Steins;Gate. It has a more continuous storyline, but that just made me binge watch most of the episodes, haha. At first I was kinda putting it off, because I thought it would be more childish due to some of the characters, but I was dead wrong. It does have some more humor than the other shows, but for the most part it's serious. There even is a movie after you finish the episodes and that was also lot better than I would have expected.

Hope it helps :)
