| I am not so sure myself but according to the tvtropes Ninja Gaiden happens before DoA. the series goes like this, from a young 18 years old Ryu to a 23 years* old Master Ninja: Ninja Gaiden Shadow (Game Boy) —> Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) —> Dragon Sword —> Sigma II —> Ninja Gaiden 3 —> Ninja Gaiden (NES) —> The Ancient Ship of Doom —> The Dark Sword of Chaos —> Ninja Gaiden OVA —> Dead or Alive series |

| I thought the ninja gaiden(Xbox)-3 was a reboot of the older series and is not in the same timeline as the older ninja gaiden games |
| Of course NG3 is a reboot. But that is more of a separation based on the characters age in the respective game then an actual continuity. Starting with 18 years old Ryu - to 23 in the OVA I think and then 25 in DOA5. |
