| Just throwing out a theory, but the general structure of the story of Kanon is actually very much like the musical style "Canon". A Canon is a musical work that starts with a single melody and, after a certain amount of time, that same melody (or the melody altered in a specific way) is added to the mix to create a unique contrapuntal composition. In the story of Kanon, Yuuichi is the core line. The story begins with him and ends with him (though he's got ayu there too). After the main theme (yuuichi) is introduced, the variations (other characters) come in. The story continues until all voices are included, and then, like in a real canon, they begin to drop out. First Makoto, then Sayuri, then Mai, then Shiori, then Akiko (nayuki's mom), and finally Ayu (though she comes back). I know the ending ruins the analogy, but I think the producers may have had this in mind when they were making this show. Any thoughts? |

| A very astute observation. Note that once Saiyuri directly mentions Pachbel's Canon in a conversation to Yuuichi and described it similarly. To add to your analysis, examine the soundtrack of Kanon. Note that many themes are repeated in different ways; in fact, you could say that some songs from the Kanon OST are Canons. All the heroines have also have associated themes and the introduction and arcs of those individuals literally construct a canon in a musical sense. |
