Okay, as someone who never watched the 90's tv series I'm wondering if this movie was intended to be a standalone or if watching the series is suppose to be a prerequisite for it making any sense.

I'm not a big fan of older low-resolution animation, so I hadn't bothered watching the original series, opting instead for the DVD of 1.0 and bought the 2.0 while I was at it.

The art is awesomely gorgeous, I'll grant that. So watching it wasn't a complete waste of my time.

But the story? What the hell?

In what world is it reasonable to take a 14 year old kid and throw him into the "most advanced weapon system on earth" with 15 seconds to learn how to even walk in it before he's fighting for his life? Really? That's the best they could do? And it's not like they explain why he's the only one who can do it; they just say so. Assertion without explanation. And if he IS the only one who can do it, why hasn't he been in training for the last few years? Or months? Or hell, even days?

Or just enough time to read the owners manual?

And that was all right off the bat. So the whole movie starts out with this huge "wtf" moment and it never seems to get any clearer.

So I'm left wondering was this even intended to be a movie you could watch and make any sense of without having seen the entire TV series from 15 years ago?

Guess I'll go put in the 2.0 DVD and watch it, since I paid for it, but man, I hope 1.0 isn't an example of the writer's storytelling skills.

2.0 and up are reboots whiles this is a compressed remake
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one
For the Union makes us strong

Okay, yes, I understand it was a remake. I thought I made that obvious.

My question is whether or not this remake was made with the intention of making any sense to anyone who's never seen the old tv series. From what I could tell the answer would be "No" but for all I know the original TV series didn't make any sense either.

Yes its a classic. Not many 15+ year old anime can still spark the fandom, the hate and the discussion that Eva still does. Hell, not many anime aired in the last 6 months get talked about as often as Eva still does. Yes they explain why teenagers are the only ones who can pilot the EVAs. No the story doesn't get a whole lot clearer.

Well I find it different from orginal series.
Not better, nor worst simply different view. Well it's hard to imagine while knowing what was happening with Anno back then.
So I don;t think that you need to know clasic series in order to understand that one - there are already differences and there will be more - in action or characters. So explanation from series may be different this time - and about what you wrote: if it won't appear in movies than you can watch orginal (well except that there are many things ommited or very vague).

So in future movies they'll explain why only teenagers can pilot the EVA's, that's fine, but do they explain why whiny-boy is the only one who can pilot 01? And why he wasn't ever trained in how to pilot it before thrown into combat?

Or are the rest of them just as sloppy in narrative as this one is?

that was my point 2,0 is alsomost all new fottage wile 1.0 is a well compressed reamke made to replce the first 75% of the TV

in series it was somehow explained why (and it would answer your questions)
so I hope that it will go also to movies
problem is, in my opinion, that those explanation may not be totally compatible - again Anno while creating orginal was in depression (I don't remeber if he was IN or was recovering) and now he is fine - and that may affect certain things

If movies (3+4) follow the show, yes they do. But if you're looking for a story thats easy to follow...bail out now. The "plot" of Eva TV is basically an excuse for a) giant "mecha" b) psychological study c) Artsy fartsy avantgarde mindscrew. If you don't like any of those, Eva probably isn't for you :)

Heh, well, I appreciate the honest reply. I don't require "easy to follow" stories. But stories that have an internal logic is appreciated. And if they do something mind boggling (like throwing an untrained 14 year old into a battle mech with no time to even read the owners manual) perhaps explaining why they did that is a good idea? Just for the sake of narrative cohesion if nothing else.

However, if the whole show is basically shoddy writing that exists for the purpose of putting a series of mecha fights up on a screen then okay. That's certainly what 1.0 seemed like.

I like good writing, good art, and cute/sexy girl characters. In that order. Seems like this movie delivers on #2 and #3 (kinda) but is on Fail Mode with the all important #1. Alas.

Well, just finished the 2.22 DVD. Apologies in advance to any Evangelion fanboys but jeebus on a pogo stick, what utterly horrid writing. So far of the two "you must see these anime classics" (Ghost In The Shell and Neon Genesis Evangalion) I'm having a hard time listening to any of my anime fan friends from now on in their recommendations.

Compared to this movie the other anime's I've watched like Freezing are Shakespeare. GAH what a waste of $25 this was.

Well, at least the artwork is superb. I mean, really, superb.

There's your problem...

In what way would a new movie where it is stated that it's different from the original series be considered a classic?

i don't suppose you've noticed gendo's rather blatant remarks hinting at several underlying agendas behind his and others' actions? also the fact that the aforementioned 14 yo kid was discovered not long before the angel seen at the beginning attacked?

it's better than a classic, because the classic was fucking awful. not having to watch 10 episodes of shinji practicing his emokid act made evangelion enjoyable for me. ditto for asuka's tsuntsun.

I don't follow your logic. The current movie re-visionings are not the same as the TV series and if anyone is recommending the current movies as "classics" to you they are 10 years too early.

A show being considered a classic doesn't mean you have to like it or ever watch it. So find what ever eye candy pleases you and watch that instead of pissing on a series you've never seen.

I'm just going to laugh to myself about the superficiality of moaning about how a show from the 90s isn't in HD. BluRay players are more backwards compatible than some fans.
