I'm just wondering what the most basic background knowledge requirement is for me to watch this, understand it and enjoy it. It will probably make very little sense if I just jumped straight into it, right? Also, the original OVA seems to have received quite weak reviews so I was hoping to avoid having to watch it. I know it's pretentious but I cherry-pick what I watch because there is only so much time in a day. =(

I look forward to any answers!

Those are the easiest ones to get into, in my opinion. I watched those and then thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

This is really about all you need to watch. Many of the characters they introduced have never been seen.
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

I´d say it is helpful to watch either the OVA or a couple of episodes from the TV series, else you will keep wondering why the heck this average guy is living together with a bunch of goddesses. The more background knowledge the better, but since the movie is relatively stand-alone, it can be enjoyed as such as well. And the story of the movie is taking place some time after the TV series, because all of them have angels (which are introduced in the series), so following the release dates is not really good.

Resurrecting an old topic, but for future potential viewers, Keiichi and the Goddesses have been living together for 2 1/2 years now. So this movie would take place after season 2 of the tv series. The animation is near identical to the tv series and makes it feel like a feature film from that universe.

@observer80 I second this. Never saw any of the OVAs, just jumped into the TV series, watched both seasons, and specials, and ended with this movie. It made for the perfect viewing and wraps up everything nicely. No inconsistencies or timeline issues at all despite it being made before the TV series for the OVAs. It takes place in the latest point in the timeline and served as phenomenal conclusion to the TV series story thread.
