Welp, I'll just copy paste my comment I posted elsewhere:
I wouldn't bank on it really (Eventhough I want to). KyoAni will be too busy with their currents works to concentrate on anything else. And with the production quality of the K-On! franchise, they'll be taking their time with it, lest they lose the animation quality (read: attention to details) some people love KyoAni and K-On! in general for. I think at best, it would be an OVA, but I wouldn't even dream of it before some time next year.

I don't think there is talk about doing it soon. It looks like speculation of some time in the future.

I wouldn't expect another news out of them until later next year. But, I just thought of something. Could it be that this was like a gauge? To measure the reactions of people? It could be something like, if the community generates enough buzz due to this pic, doing a 3rd season would be economically profitable for them, since it would show that there are still people who will actually want a 3rd season and are still interested in K-On!. They wouldn't do another season if they think that it'll bomb with the audience. And this has received pretty little speculation. So I think we can already forget about a 3rd season :P

I wouldn't go by MAL is even a cross-section of the fans of K-ON! We're the international people who, for the most part, don't pay for the stuff. *blush*
