Plot Summary

Thirty-five-year-old novelist Makio Koudai never had a good relationship with her older sister Minori, who always berated her for being different. Due to this, Makio is not stricken with grief upon hearing the news that Minori and her husband die in a car crash. But when Makio is asked to identify their bodies, she runs into her 15-year-old niece, Asa Takumi, whom she has not seen in years.

Struggling to process her parents' death, Makio reassures Asa that her complicated feelings are valid and suggests that the teenager start writing in a diary as a way to cope with the loss. Upon learning that no other relatives wanted to take in Asa, Makio decides to become her guardian despite her lack of experience. In a world full of uncertainty, the novelist and teenager must learn to live with each other while figuring themselves out.

Episode 1

Asa's life is suddenly turned upside down after her parents are killed in a car crash. Makio hasn't seen her niece that much seeing that she had a distant relationship with her sister. But seeing that there's nobody else to turn to who can become her legal guardian, Makio takes up the task, and she tells Asa to keep a journal. And Asa's imagination does a great job in illustrating her life seeing that she's dropped in a dessert after what happened. This sets the foundation for some great character development seeing that the manga this show is based off of is amazing.

One other note is that the Japanese translation for this show is journal of a foreign land, which is what Asa's imagination entails seeing that she suddenly is living in a different home, and it feels like a foreign land even though it's not physically too far from where she was living. I'm not exactly sure who or what the witch part is all about.

Asa seems kind of autistic. Doesn't process emotions, gets fixated on things.

I like the characters, so I can properly pay attention to the story, and I'm sure it's a meaningful story, but this show is pure drama. I have a hard time with drama. I get bored too easily. If it didn't have characters I like, I wouldn't get bored, because my mind would be wandering off to other things. But in that case, I wouldn't really be watching. I'm afraid I'll have to skip this.

Good drama has actual drama in it. This just felt like watching paint dry.

@zkeleton

Oh good, I wasn't the only one who felt that way then.

So far, I've seen from this what I wanted from This Monster Wants to Eat Me and Flower and Asura: More stuff about the situation and thoughts, and less about the character bonding and cute moments. I'm looking forward to hear more about the 2 MCs' individual dilemmas.

I did get distracted and had to rewind multiple times in the middle of it, but that's likely a me problem. xD

Same. I thought it was well done for what it was but I was bored stiff. I saw no reason that this was done with animation; a low-budget live-action would have served as well, and probably better.
