Do I need to read the manga to understand this OVA?

As said in the title, is it necessary to read the manga to understand? Or can I just watch it as a stand-alone work? Thanks

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the OVA but I do remember being disappointed. I felt like it was a waste of time. It’s just a teaser for the manga. The manga is awesome. I read the series through three or so times. Sometimes it’s frustrating with how the art style makes the characters look very similar but pish posh that it’s still great. I only wish there had been a continuation.
