Alright here is my theory . Remember when Gon Freecs transform himself into his older version or what people like to call it the ''unknown'' transformation where Gon suddenly being huge and have some super muscle and long hair like Yu Yu Hakusho dude and turn into a badass character . Now , i can assume he will be one of the strongest nen user if he didnt used that transformation just to killed Neferpitou(you know the cat girl thing) . He did said himself that he will give up everything and that means to give up his super badass version just to kill Neferpitou . Like Biscuit Krueger , (no not the biscuits that you eat) she hides her true appearance where she has this muscle like body and the strength of a beast . Thats why she looks like a little girl cuz she hides her true power cuz well she didnt like her true appearance (who doesnt with a body like that when you're a girl) . Gon do it in a reverse way . Meaning , he gave up his true transformation that will be his in the future just to kill Neferpitou . I can assume if Gon didn't do that , he can kill Meruem with ease . I can even assume Gon himself will be one of the strongest Nen user just like his father did .

Like duuuh, if gon grows up, he'll be the strongest nen user ever alongside his companions(killua). But too bad he wasted that opportunity by using all his power to kill neferpitou. Damnit, during that episode, i was facepalming like shizz. ahh dang....its such a waste

It's been quite sometime ago since I watched HxH but didn't that sister of Killua undo the fact that he would never reach his full potential as well?

And; seeing how incredibly powerfull this version of Gon was means that he can still become one of the most powerfull nen-users even without reaching his full potential.
His full potential would've simply been god-like and now it's reduced to demi-god-like or something.

(And I also kinda liked the 'catgirl-thing' (Neferpitou) so I hated that episode).

I finally watched HunterXHunter a while back, so I can join this discussion now~ Not that there's much to it.

Meaning , he gave up his true transformation that will be his in the future just to kill Neferpitou . I can assume if Gon didn't do that , he can kill Meruem with ease .

It is true, that he does possess enough power to defeat Meruem, whilst in this state. But that of course is only true if we take it that Meruem is at the same level of power as he was during the battle with Netero. And remember, Meruem became even more over-powered after having absorbed his 2 servants' (Shaiapouf and Menthuthuyoupi)

Overall I would say that, Meruems' talent is far greater than Gons'. That means, that if Meruem would have lived for as long as Gon, Meruem would easily be the most powerful character. Even Gons' "Unknown" state would be no match for him, as Gons' "Unknown" state is his future self, but because of Meruems' power of "evolution" and his godly natural talent and potential, he couldn't be beat by any character introduced so far, and most likely any character that will be introduced.

His full potential would've simply been god-like and now it's reduced to demi-god-like or something.

I would say it more like: Meruem = beyond god, because of evolution
Gon: possibly a demi-god
Current Gon, after getting plot-armored: Netero level.
