| Near the end of the movie, Sophie places Calcifer into Howl's body; Howl regains his heart and Calcifer is set free. Why couldn't Calcifer and Howl have done that on their own in the many years that passed between their meeting and the events of the movie? Was this explained or hinted at somewhere in the movie and I just missed it? I think the movie could have had Sophie do something else to save Howl other than giving him back his heart. Especially since his heart was right there. The whole time. In a fire. (And also, is Calcifer animating the castle at the end of the movie? Does he and Howl still share a bond? Why did Howl even think to eat Calcifer in the first place?) [Even if you don't have a straight answer, discussions and theories would be great to read!] |

| Yes, it's because of the love sophie has for howl that she could give back his heart. Sophie didn't ask if Howl would die, but if calcifer would die by returning Howl's heart, because Howl gave his heart to Calcifer to SAVE him from the very beginning (remember, the demons were like shooting stars dying in the lake, in Howl secret garden, some crap like that). Howl saved Calcifer by giving him his heart, but he lost the capacity to LOVE. When sophie goes back in the time Howl was still a child and saved Calcifer, she shouts "Howl ! Calficer ! Wait for me in the future !", and back in the present she understands that howl has been waiting for her the whole time. In the end, Calcifer is FREE (no bound between him and Howl anymore), but he kinda misses the old times with Marko, Howl and Sophie, where he had so much fun. So, to live with everyone as a family again, he makes the castle "live" again. (Sorry for my bad english, it really kinda sucks ; I'M FRENCH hehehe), hope you'll understand what I meant though :) |
