Porco Rosso is one of my favorite movies, but there is one thing that really bothers me, and that is Gina.
I don't Hate Gina's character, don't get me wrong, but there is something about her backstory that was in my opinion a bit unnecessary, and kind of killed the little romance that this anime had. I've seen multiple stories were the main guy falls in love with his dead friend's wife/girlfriend and it was ok, but the problem here is that from Gina's backstory, it is kind of implied that they liked each other since childhood, even before she met her dead husband. What's up with that, doesn't that make her a bit bitchy, who married other guys despite loving porco. My point is, was it really necessary for the story to had her marry other guys. I don't think it would have change the story at all, it they would have omitted that, and make her the loyal girl who has been in love with Porco since their childhood, and is still waiting for him to ask her out.

The same thought crossed my mind when seeing that particular scene. But during that moment I figured that she did like him and wanted to take their relationship to the next level while Marco himself isn't the type to settle down with a woman and who wants to fly across the skies instead.

And I suppose during that time it was fairly unlikely for such a beautiful woman as Gina to be single the whole time. Maybe she too wanted to experience the joys of marriage and so she settled for a different man, always keeping Marco somewhere deep inside her heart.
