Before I know it, a loud crackle erupts on the ground before me, then shouting echoes in every direction. Several clouds of smoke blossom all around me, obscuring everything from view. I quickly scramble back, heart racing from the eminent danger.
“Now!” someone shouts.
A shower of sparks rain from above, sizzling and steaming in the moist-feeling air. The ceiling becomes blindingly bright that I cannot bear to look at it. The halls echo with more shouting and hissing, and it starts to get very dark, as if a black shroud has been dropped on us. I see the girl in white stumble towards me out of the darkness and fall to her knees with a gasp, and I instinctively lower myself to see if she is alright.
“Save them! Be careful of poison!” an echoey voice shouts. I think this one’s the scorpion girl. Something darts towards my eyes and I instinctively shirk my head. The soft trill of multiple projectile impacts ring through my ears as I see a row of darts lodged in someone’s arm held out in front me.
“Don’t worry human. Poison doesn’t harm me,” says my savior. I look up to see the previous robed girl standing protectively in front of both the girl in white and I from the unseen aggressor, with her sleeved arm held out to shield a number of projectiles, presumably poisoned, from reaching their destination. Who are they aiming for? Are they going for the girl in white? Or perhaps me? I find it difficult to believe I’m a target in an organized attack, so it’s likely the girl in white. There has to be something special about her. “Let’s move,” the robed girl commands, helping up the girl in white, who looks like she’s not doing very well. She struggles to even stand.
“Prevent the ritual!” I hear someone shout behind me.
“Oh no,” says the robed girl as she ushers us back towards the area where her scorpion companion was. I guess someone more dangerous is blocking our escape. “There’s another one!” she yells as we make our way towards the scorpion girl, who is standing guard concentrating, listening for sounds in the shadows.
“She’s still here,” says the scorpion girl. “The assassin.”
“There’s someone else casting the darkness,” says the robed girl. “In the hallway.”
I try to help the girl in white stand. She feels cold and weak. Before anything else can happen, a figure darts out of the shadows, only to be intercepted by the tail of the scorpion girl. The figure comes into view long enough for me to see it. She’s a long and dark haired girl wearing dark clothes and a mask over her mouth.
“Get down and keep her safe,” the robed girl instructs me, regarding the girl in white. We huddle down towards the crypt, trying to keep a low profile. The robed girl raises her arms slightly as she joins her companion.
The scorpion girl holds a dagger in each hand, swiping at the air as the masked girl expertly dodges and darts from shadow to shadow. Her scorpion legs clatter on the floor as she quickly shuffles from side to side, locked in combat with her masked opponent, and they quickly disappear into the darkness. Long whips fly out of the robed girl’s sleeves as she strikes somewhere into the darkness at an enemy I can’t see from here. I can hear a crackle and brief flashes of light as firecrackers are scattered on the floor.
During this chaos, the girl in white, now in my arms, raises a hand to brace the side of my face.
“W-What’s wrong?” I ask.
She simply shakes her head, and pulls me close to her, shuddering. What happened to her to cause this weakened state? She looks and feels so frail in my arms, where just moments ago, she looked so proud and dignified.
“Please bear with it,” she whispers, then lifts her head towards me, while bringing mine towards hers with her hand. I feel my nervous breath blow off her face and back at me. In a starling move, she pulls my face directly into hers, and she kisses me. A sudden warm feeling comes over me, and blueish lights circle around us. I try to gasp, but I am unable. I start to feel weak, as if my energy is being sapped. I stare into the girl’s eyes as life seems to fill hers.
“It’s happening!” I hear an unfamiliar voice exclaim excitedly on the the other side of the room. Suddenly the blanket of darkness lifts and is almost immediately sucked away. In an instant, the room is bright enough to be momentarily blindingly bright, and I break my kiss with the girl in white, eyes slowly adjusting to the light. Another girl with many hair ornaments, short decorated pink hair, and golden armored limbs appears where I heard the voice, holding a ball of pure darkness in her right hand. She seems to be hovering in the air above the crypt using rapidly vibrating transparent wings. “I thought I’d brighten your day,” she proclaims.
Now that we can all see clearly, our adversaries are equally clear for us to see as well. There are two. The masked girl in dark asian-themed clothes similar to the common portrayal of a ninja, and another nearly naked and floating in a large orb of darkness which seem to envelope her widely spread legs. The orb seems wispy and fluid at the same time, black and seemingly distorting light in the area around it. Her long hair looks to be the same substance as that of the orb. They both look troubled to see the girl in white standing on her own now. The masked girl steps back awkwardly now that she is completely revealed.
It is now clear that a large section of the roof is missing, and a bright light beams through. The girl in white stands straight up, her face lit brilliantly by the beating rays of the sun, and her hair flowing freely in the sudden gust of wind. It no longer feels clammy and stuffy as fresh air circulates freely through the dusty ruins.
“Quick, the human,” commands the dark orbed girl. With a loud bang, the other one instantly dashes towards me with a slight arc to avoid my two protectors in a desperate attempt to bring down her target. Unfortunately for her, the scorpion girl moves blindingly fast. With exceptional speed, she whips out her tail, leaving a trail of red streaming through the air. As the robed girl shoves me away protectively, I see the ninja girl’s limp body tumble into the wall with a sickening crack, then pitifully slump into the corner. The trail of blood lightly paints the wall.
The dark-orbed girl looks horrified by the display. “Pointless waste of life,” she says in a calmly melancholic tone. “Short sighted. Failure!” she screaches with a distraught expression on her face as she quickly floats towards the gaping hole above to make her escape.
Wow. What is going on? I stare at the lifeless body in shock, trying to recompose myself, but before long I feel a hand at my chin. The girl in white brings my face to hers again.
“This may be a lot to take in, but it will be all right. You will be safe,” she says and again she kisses me, this time her eyes staring deeply into mine. Again I start to feel weak, only this time she keeps her lips locked forcefully onto mine. I am powerless to resist. My body starts to tire again, and my strength seems to drain at an alarming rate as shimmering blue light completely fills my vision. My legs fail to keep me up, and I feel arms wrap around me tightly. I feel a strong pulsing in my temples, and before long I lose consciousness. |
