Repression collars were created by the highest levels of Prodigy Academy's staff during the apex of their power, with the intent of maintaining their hold over the student body. When evil still reigned on Disharmonia, these devices were forcibly lashed around the neck of each new student, never to be removed, lest they explode, and take the poor unfortunate to hell with them. When the island's balance of power shifted, every collar therein instantly unlatched, and eager students cast them aside. Alas, the devices could not be destroyed or lost (see the main background for the MUCK). It was suggested among some that perhaps purposefully detonating each collar would remove them from existence, but no matter what was tried, the collar's security device would not trip, save for being upon the neck of an innocent victim. Indeed, there are many among the indigenous population that think even being near a repression collar is to bring a curse upon one's self. No new collars have been forged since that day, for their creation was an amalgam of mortal science and the island's own power--since then, the island has refused to imbrue any new devices. Now the collars sit patiently at the repository in the Old Svalich Woods, until their services are requested, and are as infamous as the One Ring is to the population of Middle Earth.

What exactly can a repression collar do?
Repression collars have several powers, but since they are no longer all controlled by the faculty, some of these powers work differently. Anyone at any time can take a collar from the repository, but of course, you're going to have to roleplay getting somebody to wear it:
-A person who uses a collar on another person is called the collar's current "Master". The master of your collar is the one who put it on you.
-The master of the collar presses a series of buttons on the collar's outer surface, thus creating a 'code' for the device. The device cannot be removed without entering the code. If anyone attempts to remove a repression collar (take it out of their inventory) without using the code, than just like in the old days, the collar explodes with the force of the very God of Disharmonia itself. That's bad. Trust us, you won't survive it. The current master of the collar can also input the collar's code into any cellphone or other GPS ready device, and easily pinpoint the wearer's exact position at any time. If the collar is ever removed safely, and is not within the hour reapplied to the same or another person, the device itself assumes its job is done. It dematerializes, and returns to the repository. Any code inputted into it is reset, and the device awaits a new master. (We ask those who are done with a collar to either physically return it to the repository, or use the 'home' or 'sweep' commands to send it back there.) There's no limit to the amount of time a hapless unfortunate could be made to wear their collar, save for the whim of the device's current master.
-A repression collar literally 'represses' powers beyond normal human capacity. In other words, if the collar finds any power a player has to be dangerous to the continued control of the master, for example, Usagi becoming Sailor moon or Tenchi summoning a powerful sword from mid air, it will negate these abilities. Things like turning invisible and such would also be affected, since an invisible student does pose a threat to the collar's master being able to keep them in line. Abilities such as Ranma's transformation into a girl, which are not deemed to be especially dangerous, are not affected. Remember that the collars have no effect on ordinary abilities, such as Rally Vincent's skill with firearms, Kenshin's skill with swords (if they can obtain these items), or massed martial arts skill (However, chi blasts an aural attacks would be found to be extraordinary and would be affected). Characters without any special abilities are still affected by the device, as the collar is still a homing device and bears a significant social stigma. The collar's clasp welds itself shut when it is applied, as the device does not expect it to ever be removed without the code, and the inner rim presses a trigger against the flesh of the neck. Should the trigger be released (such as by removal of the collar) without the release code, the device explodes immediately, as above. Sound challanging yet, roleplayers!!?

As time has passed at Prodigy, it has become necessary to clarify the limits of certain abilities the collars have authority over. Here's a list of powers that are still allowed to collared characters (you can always use this to assist in character creation, as well):
-Vampirism
-Mild Lycanthropy
-Gender Shifting
-Empathic Abilities
Yes, the list is still small. Changes will be made as deemed necessary by the wizard staff.

The reason the above system was created was to encourage dramatic roleplay. It's not meant to be a detriment, rather a plot device. Work with it! Have fun with it! Maybe your character has powers similar to Rogue's of the X-men--in that case, she might welcome a repression collar. Perhaps you're beholden to someone else, look up to them and desire a symbol of your loyalty to them, or you've merely been talked, tricked, or beaten into it. The sky's the limit! |
