Apparently some new extra pages released in the final chapter some time ago and it changed everything quite a lot. Kind of a spoiler alert if someone hasn't read them
In that kenji said that fukubei was the one who really died in their school days not katsumata and katsumata just impersonated fukubei after that. So apparently the orignal friend was also katsumata? I understand this to a certain extent but this just leaves so mant plot holes

fukubei died long ago and katsumata took over his appearance and tried to fulfill his whole plan, the reason friend seemed different to kanna was because he finished everything fukubei wrote and he started doing his own stuff. all the revival stuff was just tricks using doppelgangers

This ending creates so much confusion, so honestly I just prefer to focus on the original ending.

But genuine question, why would Katsumata even want to impersonate Fukubei? Fukubei is the reason why people considered him to be "dead", so why on earth would he want to live as Fukubei, even fulfilling his dreams?

@AVB_Zerlox_17 i don´t fully remember but i'm pretty sure katsumata stole some candy and kenji put all the blame on him which was shown in a backstory, and so when fukubei died katsumata saw his chance to not get bullied for stealing anymore by taking up fukubei's appearance...?

But it's been a while and i also only half get the story lol its super complicated
