Quick Question:

  • Why do some manga here have “?” chapters or in some cases the volume is “?”. Take note that they are already finished manga. It makes me wonder if information here are just google based or not. I thought this website is more reliable than google in terms of anime and manga informations. Where does this get informations, does this website not have connections in Japan?

MAL logs the number of Chapter and Volume of the original Japanese release.

The Chapter count includes the Extra Chapters which were added to the Volumes, and were not released in magazines, so MAL waits for a confirmation of the exact Chapter count, confirmed by someone with a Japanese copy (or the preview of Amazon, for example).

Some series also does not have physical releases, so there is no Volumes to log. That's especially the case for Manhwas, with only very few of them having a physical release.

The infos are provided by users of the site, given to the mods through one of the thread dedicated to that, and then undergo a more or less long queue and verifications before getting approved or denied/ignored.

Google itself has absolutely no infos. It's just a search engine, which redirects you to different site. That said, MAL is indeed more reliable than most other sites, but they can be slow to update infos, especially as these infos are provided by the users to mods to update.

Nothing will be more reliable than looking at the Japanese publisher tho, even if the Chapter count is almost never disclosed.

Sites of Japanese publishers (and their official announcements on social medias), Japanese physical copies, Amazon previews, ...

It's basically owned by Japanese companies, but it has absolutely no connection with the entries themselves; the site is still run by Americans (?) admins and mods. I guess these investors just asks for some features to be added/removed, at the very most. (They most probably just look for the money the site output, and don't care about the rest...)

Sometimes for less popular series there just hasn't been anyone who has updated it on MAL.
