Episode 13

This season begins with what amounts to a transition episode as it's all about heroes doing what heroes are supposed to do back in their homeland, and then Shy doing an interview with Tojiko, who writes a magazine article about it to be posted in a magazine. Pretty much, it's an episode to get back into the swing of things before continuing with the main story as a lot has happened during the first season, and big things are in store for Shy as somebody is coming to see her. It's good to be back with this show as I'm hoping for better things after a first season that was bogged down by consistency problems.

Episode 14

And another daily life episode, though it wasn't exactly an ordinary day at school. While Shy was trying to study in the library, she meets a ghost in Beni, who was a member of the literature club. She wants Shy to join, but ultimately she couldn't even if she wanted to since that club has since been absorbed by the newspaper club. And then Shy meets Ai, who is a ninja that ran away from home, and is being stalked by Tokimaru. Ai ends up taking down a purse snatcher that allows Shy to not have to expose her secret. The story isn't exactly moving along here, but Ai is a rather interesting person given her background as a ninja.

Beni Hanawa sounded like Aoi Koga...was this just a guest appearance or something? I am not sure what the point of this episode was, feels like an OVA

Well, it's getting off to an awkward start, but I still enjoy the show. We'd better see more of eyepatch girl in the future, because otherwise her half-episode was utterly pointless.

Episode 15

It turns out that not only is Ai a ninja, but the princess of her clan. Tokimaru is simply protecting the princess, and Ai is through living a sheltered life. So Shy brings Ai home, as it turns out she's a pretty good cook, and her skills with the knife translate well to the kitchen. And then Iko comes over and the three of them have a sleepover where Ai reveals the real reason she left. It turns out Ai is after her sister, who is a member of Amarariruku who goes by the name of Utsuro Katakuri. So in the end, it wasn't coincidence that they met as Ai is connected to Stigma.

Episode 16

And now, Ai's sister going under the name Utsuro launches an attack on Tokyo as she swallows up the city with a giant sphere. Unilord calls all the heroes for an emergency meeting and Shy is appointed the leader of this operation, even though she has no leadership experience and would rather let somebody else lead as since the battle is in her territory, she knows her homeland best. So Shy has quite a lot on her hands as she needs to pick her teammates and give them the proper roles seeing that a leader is still just human and can't do everything. Let's see how things turn out as at the very least she has Ai helping out seeing that she must be the one to defeat her sister that's causing this mess.

Episode 17

And into the sphere go the heroes, and while the people there are still alive, they are essentially zombies in there. And there, they meet up with Doki, who is none too pleased that he's being called a cute girl, and takes quite a liking to Miang Long unaware that he is a boy. Then comes the whole trolley dilemma where somebody has to die and the choice is between whom as the trains are filled with people Utsuro has turned into zombies. The situation has quickly gotten ugly all while those Amarariruku are just playing around.

Episode 18

Kufufu sure did psyche out Shy and company with that trolley dilemma as Shy is determined to save everybody, and destroyed the track going the other direction, but they still went through with it and managed to stop the train only to find out that the passengers were just mannequins. Then Ai explains her background and explains how her sister Mai became Utsuro and is out to destroy the village and put an end to ninjas. Ai and Mai though that their lives would continue as they were, but everything changed when Mai got that ring from Stigma and possessed by it, she went on to slaughter the village. Ai was stabbed, but Tokimaru managed to save her. Pretty much, this episode goes to show that nothing lasts forever in this world, and Ai experienced that firsthand.

A shinobi who killed their whole village, where have I seen that before?

The "I am going to save the world by destroying it" villain is way too trite.

Episode 19

Lots of bumbling here as Miang Long and Doki headbutt each other by accident after they both tripped, all while Inori takes control of Piltz, but Piltz manages to break free of the angel's control, and Pepesha trying to reach out to Kufufu the way Tzveta did. And after all that, Shy and Ai reach Utsuro at the top of the tower where it looks like there's no turning back for Ai's big sister. And outside the sphere, Stigma turns one of the news reporters into one of his agents. This fight has so many twists and turns, and in unexpected ways at that.

Episode 20

It's Stardust to the rescue as he takes on Stigma and Quabala himself, and while he's able to land a hit on Stigma, he has some surprises of his own. And then Ai encounters her sister and given the situation, it seems that there's just no convincing Mai. So Ai stabs her, which is exactly what Mai was hoping for as now that Ai has killed somebody, their souls can merge to form the ultimate ninja monster. Lots of twists going on here in this battle with Ai having fallen into Mai's trap as she planned for all this to happen.

Episode 21

With Ai fusing with Mai, that means her sword Purity that opposes Utsuro's Nihil has been left for Shy to use, and despite not ever holding a sword, she knows all of Ai's techniques from Purity. And thus, Shy is reaching out to Ai, all while Mai's spiral into darkness is further detailed as she once treasured life to the point where she even adopted a bear. But she drifted into darkness and realized that to carry out her "justice" she needed to kill her heart, and that she did in spades. Shy nearly kicked the bucket there, but the soul of Purity saved her and now she's ready to fight back to defeat Utsuro and bring Ai back after Mai absorbed her needing to get her hands tainted to make that happen.

Episode 22

Shy couldn't reach out her feelings to Mai, but with help from Tokimaru and the other heroes, they finally got through to her. Mai had been struggling internally, but just when she was about to break through, Doki and Kufufu come in to break the orb, which would release all the evil energy stored up to taint everybody's hearts without using a ring as they are trying to make sure Mai stays that way. But Mai finally has a change of heart and fights back and seeing that it's her heart this orb responds to that she's not going to let Amarariruku take advantage of her anymore. It wasn't easy, but they finally broke through like they said they would.

Episode 23

And just like that, everybody pulled their weight together to destroy the sphere that was threatening to turn everybody into those soulless beings withough the use of the ring. Ai, Mai, Shy, and Tokimaru all put their strength together to harness the energy from the sun and moon, all while the other herpes kept the other agents at bay, as well as prevent the miasma from leaking out while the four do their thing. With that, the day has been saved, and more importantly Mai is back to being herself again. One more episode left to go.

Episode 24 (Finale)

With the orb destroyed, the heroes clean up the remaining mess as they force the Amarariruku agents to retreat. As for Mai, while she regained her humanity, her life was tied to the orb and with it destroyed, so is her life. With her parting message, Mai hands her heart over to Shy, entrusting her to use it for good, as well as telling her about Shine, known as the person of light. And then Tokimaru reveals his true form as he's actually a bird that Mai once helped when he was injured. So with Mai having passed on having shed her darkness, it's back to everyday life as Shy's publicity improves having been credited for leading the operation, while Ai returns to the shinobi world to rebuild it to her vision. With that, the season wraps up.

Final Thoughts

This season is pretty much on-par with the first season, although it does some things better and some things worse. It thrives on character-building, but stumbles on story writing, just like the first season. But the season's approach is much different as instead of having three mini-arcs this one has one long arc, and while it makes for some better storytelling and character development, the show kind of loses focus on the big picture seeing that this arc could have easily been shorter, if only to maintain focus on that big picture seeing that it is centered around characters without any prior connections who just come and go. In any case, it does a good enough job to complement the first season, but it felt that this season got away from the grand scheme of things by spending the entire season on this arc.

This season felt like a bit of a downgrade to me. The first few episodes were okay but once we got in to the actual arc, it seemed to fall into a very simplistic and predictable plot. I also felt the animation and pacing were poorer than in season 1. I think I'll go back to the manga for this and bypass any more seasons that might come out in the future.

It was good show with a solid plot. I was a bit disappointed with the "power of Friendship" approach at the end, especially since it failed at its intended purpose, saving Utsuro. The writing could use some improvements here and there.
